FreeRoll, Basketball Edition the First
We did it for football and it was a success, plus people got free money and stuff. Now MGoBlog partner-in-fantasy Draftstreet is going to let us try this for hoops.
Remind me what this is:
It's fantasy except instead of drafting one team at the beginning of the season they've broken it up into quick-hitting night leagues. Enrollment in our pool is free for MGoReaders, and this time there's $300 (up from $200) in the pool paid out among the Top 12 finishers as soon as each freeroll ends. Since there were way more interesting games on Saturday we chose to go with that day, although Michigan-Ohio State (and MSU, and like nobody else of any relevance whatsoever) plays Sunday.
This free contest will be salary-cap style drafting where everyone tries to assemble the best team out of the available players. You will have a $100,000 budget to build a team of 3 forwards, 3 guards, and 2 utility players. Each CBB player has been assigned a price based on their expected fantasy performance. You can adjust your roster up until the contest starts this Saturday at 11:00am EST at which time your rosters will lock and the Live Scoreboard will be available.
Note: you can't be eligible for prize money, even though entry is free, if you're from Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana, Vermont, or Puerto Rico.
About last time:
Leaderboard? Leaderboard.
Unbwolverine rode Seth Doege and…Akeem Shavers? to victory, proving why did I waste so much gold on Venric Mark when Purdue was facing Indiana's rush defense. Also guys named Seth are can't-miss. Also this was a long time ago and you don't really care.
Smart bets:
Number 1 don't listen to anything I have to say about baskertball. Number 2, I think the trick to hoops is look for bad defenses: South Carolina (plays Auburn) is 289th to KenPom. Texas Tech's D is nearly as accommodating and they face Kansas!

i just made one. why doesn't the site allow you to draft players from michigan?
January 11th, 2013 at 7:15 AM ^
I was wondering the same thing...
Also, do we pick new players each week or are the players that we pick locked in for the season?

This is a one-off, so after tomorrow we'll have a winner of this round and if enough people came for this one they'll have another next month and that will be one day as well. But you can draft different teams any day, and there's other free leagues you can join there--you don't have to wait to join our leagues. The difference with us is it's free AND you can win money.

Because Michigan is playing on Sunday and this is a daily game. So I had to pick between having most college basketball players available, or having Michigan, Ohio State, and Michigan State available and like nobody else worth drafting. If everyone's going to have the same teams what's the point, right?
January 11th, 2013 at 4:06 PM ^
Makes perfect sense!
I didn't realize that it was a one day thing!

Signed up. Thanks for setting this up! I did notice a handful of teams unavailable though (SD State, Butler, Michigan, to name a few). It's not a big deal, and I was able to pick a winning team anyway, but is there a reason why some teams aren't available?
January 11th, 2013 at 1:07 PM ^
Those teams aren't playing tomorrow.

SD State is playing tomorrow. i know im complaining to the wrong person but i just want to gripe about the lack of schools and players available. I cant pick anybody from SD State or UNLV even though they are both in the top 25. that seems pretty stupid if you ask me (which no one did)
January 11th, 2013 at 3:11 PM ^
I'm not trying to be snarky, but we're talking about Saturday, January 12th right? Per ESPN's college bball scoreboard, SD State is playing Colorado St. at 8:00 PM, and Butler plays Dayton at 2:00 PM.
January 11th, 2013 at 5:23 PM ^
Ah. I guess it doesn't include non-major conference teams then?
There seems to be over 500 players even so. I mean...that's bigger than an NFL fantasy draft pool.
January 11th, 2013 at 6:50 PM ^
BCS schools only. If anyone knows any different let me know.
January 11th, 2013 at 3:30 PM ^
I feel stupid here but I'm not going to sign up if I don't understand. So it's fantasy basketball where you have a budget to draft 5 players, players are a set cost, and drafting isn't exclusive? And the points we're scoring are for one night? Or one week?
January 11th, 2013 at 3:43 PM ^
Saturday only

Pick moderately high value players from teams expected to win by a blowout.
January 11th, 2013 at 6:51 PM ^
even if they are up by 30 this is actually a pretty damn good strategy.
January 12th, 2013 at 2:46 PM ^
THANK GOD I GOT OLIDAPO ON MY TEAM! excuse my caps.

So, did we get enough participation to do this again? Now that I know what the heck I'm doing, I'd like another shot! Congrats to the winners.

Is this going to happen again any time soon?
