good post thanks Go Blue!
On the Eve of the 2009 Opening Game
One is Desmond’s tsumani comment during the ESPN Tulsa/Tulane half time show. Take away: While Desmond may be honest, Desmond is not doing Michigan any favors. Like mom said, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”
Second is Reese Davis’s comments during the same half time show. Davis pissed me off at first talking about the workouts, the controversies and how RR was not a popular choice. Davis then flipped it on me and pointed out it is primarily a faction, specifically in the M Club, who do not like RR and mostly because he wasn’t from inside the program. Like one of the earlier Mgoblog entries, Davis pointed out Alabama’s problems the infighting caused as factions tried to get ‘their right man’ in place. After all the strife, Alabama finally got it through their heads the infighting wasn’t helping and the Alabama program got the right man period in Nick Saban. Then Davis pointed out RR’s pedigree suggests he is the right man period. He just needs the opportunity. Hat tip to Mr. Davis with a heartfelt thanks.
Third, I wonder the real reason why the M Club faction does not support RR. Is it because he came from a different background and does not fit into their society (smoking jackets anyone and is this the Michigan arrogance I’ve been hearing about?)? Is it because some of the wives do not like Mrs. RR? Don’t underestimate the power of the wife. Or is it simply because he is not an insider? I ask them, who, from inside the program, should Mr. Martin have hired? Les Miles was unavailable and, as I understand it, did not have Carr’s support. Was there anyone else worthy?
Fourth, if RR would be fired at the end of the season, who should be hired? Carrol? Saban? Meyer? What top tier coach is available? What coach from within the program is top tier?
I’m an M grad, BSE (Aerospace) 80. I’m over 50 and support RR (I point out my age as there seems to be an assumption in some of the other entries that only the ‘young’ support RR). Maybe because I was an RR fan before the hire and liked watching WVU play. Maybe because I remember attending ruthless Bo games in the late 70s (3 years with Leach and 2 years of Wangler&co). Bo did not hesitate to run up the score and use it to intimidate the next opponents. Maybe because I’d grown tired of gentleman Lloyd’s more conservative approach and attempts to not humiliate an opponent…which came back to bite us on several occasions.
I get tired of hearing about RR changing the culture along with how he is not from within the program. Yes, RR has changed the culture, but from Carr not Bo. While from Bo’s lineage, Carr was hugely different from Bo. Yet Bo is the one who has been nearly deified by the M faithful. Does the M Club faction remember Bo from the 70’s or just the Bo after coaching, after the Tigers, after the semi retirement in the Athletic Department? RR is an aggressive competitor and, I feel, is the Bo of this era. RR is like the refreshing change Bo was after Bump Elliot.
So, finally, my bottle is empty (tasty by the way) and the last thing I am contemplating is tomorrow’s game. For those able to attend, I’m envious. Do us proud! And here is to RR opening up a can of whoop-ass on Western forcing the penises-with-ears in the M Club faction to just shut up and support our current program.
Very good post. Many of us (I can definitely speak for myself on this one) were not around for the Bo-era and only heard stories. It's refreshing to know that RR isn't defying the Schembechler mold but instead that of Lloyd Carr. I loved Carr but the consistency of losing one non-conference game and one conference game (at least) per year was really, really disheartening. The firepower that RR brings is exciting and I think he'll be here a long time.
It will be great to look back at this and do a comparison between Bo and RR in a few years (preferebly after the Return to Domination). I've shared your feelings since RR's hiring. Look back at the year-over-year records and try viewing the Bump Elliott years through a UM fan's eyes of that era: one conference championship but overall disappointment. And Bump was "one of them", a Michigan Man that had played and coached in Ann Arbor before taking over the head coaching position from Oosterbaan (one of the greatest Wolverines in history and head coach after Legend Crisler).
Imagine hiring an OSU coach after having decades-long lineage of former players-as-coaches!
I admire Carr greatly; yet I am SO ready for an attitude to accompany a winning percentage. God, bless us with scorched earth!
I could not not put my own thoughts down on "paper" any better than that. Very well written!
Great Post. If you remember during the beginning of Bo's era, several players formed a sort of loose union to protest the amount of work required to be a starter. Bo's comment to them was almost identical to RR's..."No one has a guaranteed starting position and everything is open for competition"
I'm 110% behind coach Rodriguez because I am a Michigan fan first and foremost. Is RR going to be enamored at U of M Like Fritz, Bo, Fielding??? That remains to be seen. We need to get behind the team, the team, the team. United we stand, divided we fall or e pluribus unum...these sayings mean something and have been around for a long time for a reason!
If RR were to be fired I would have to say the person I would go after wouldn't be a huge name. The person I would go after is Kyle Whittingham of Utah. Similar offense and from all outward appearances he seems to run a clean program.
Can't we just play a little football and settle this on the field! Screw the M Club and their elitist members! Let's Go Blue! Get em' Rich Rod! GET EM"
It is great see the support for Rich and I echo the statements above if you're at the game cheer and support them for the voices that can't make it to Ann Arbor today. I'm in SoFla right now getting ready to throw on my Michigan #7 jersey my beat up block M hat and my car flag is going on my car today to show my support in Gator country.
We Are Michigan! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Blue!
Another Aero E grad?!? How cool is that?!?
You'd hardly recognize North Campus anymore -- MANY more buildings than what you'd remember, and an actual campus life separate from Central Campus. Almost easy to get lost driving around the place.
Most of the old Aero profs are retired or passed. An era was over when Harm Buning and Gerry Faeth died....
I am also one of those older guys. My freshman year was Bo's first year. Bo was accepted because he won. We all know it was different circumstances. Bo was the right man for the job and fortunately he won right away.
RichRod is also the right man for the job. Unfortunately, 3-9 won't go away until we start winning consistently. Today will be the start.
Lloyd is a good man and won some big games. However, 8-4 is not what we want year after year. I realize it is better than 3-9 but there were a lot of things that made that a 3-9 year. Many are because of the transition.
Now it is 2009. I for one am tired of seeing teams from around the country other than us be the glamour teams. For the most part, those teams aren't doing it with pro-style offense. Michigan hired a guy that is widely recognized as an innovator in offense. He knows how to do what he knows how to do. Painfully, he had to get some different kind of player and train/coach them differently. It was painful to watch last year. Won't be perfect this year. But it will be very good, very soon. He was also smart enough to recognize that the defensive side of the ball is not where his passion is and he hired someone to be the head coach of the defense.
If someone wants to go back to what we had, head up the road to East Lansing and become a fan. I think they have a guy up there that will give that 8-4, 9-3 season and get embarrassed in a bowl every year. Hey, it is a huge upgrade for them.
For me, I want more than that for Michigan. RichRod will do it for us.
I'm all in for RichRod and Michigan.
What coach would even want to come to Michigan after the shit RR has been put through?
Anyone who wishes to undermine RR's tenure can go to hell. They have no idea what is best for Michigan.
