E: 60 Tuesday

Tomorrow E:60 will be doing a segment on Elliott Mealer tomorrow at 7pm.

For those that do not know, Mealer is a RS freshman from Wauseon, Ohio that sat out last year due to a torn rotartor cuff.  His family and girlfriend was in a car accident on Christmas Eve 2007.  The car was struck on the driver side and both his father and girlfriend were killed during or soon after the accident.  Additionally, Elliott's brother was on the passenger side front and was trapped inside the car.  Elliott tried to rescue his brother from the car and this is how he tore his rotartor cuff.  Soon after the accident Elliott's brother was claimed to be paralyzed from the waist down.

The accident happened one week before Carr retired.  When RR came in he was very accepting of Elliott's condition and circumstance.  RR told Elliott that no matter if he can ever play a down for Michigan, he will always have a scholarship at Michigan.  Elliott's brother is also making progress, I heard today that he is walking with assistance now and is swimming.

This is a great story, reminds me of the ESPN make a wish stories or something like that.  I hope everyone gets a chance to watch this.  I don't know if it is because I am from Toledo, Ohio (not that far from Wauseon) but I am really pulling for Elliott and his family.

Here is a link to the story by a Toledo news station.

I thought I heard he played in a few snaps this year during one of the blowout wins (EMU, WMU). Also, I'm not too sure if this was coach speak, but I remember one of the coaches talking about Elliot being in the best shape of his life now and will push people for a starting position next year.

The Mealer family are incredible people. I really do not know how Elliot and his brother Brock have dealt with all of the tragedy they have faced in such an optimistic, positive, and enthusiastic manner. To me, its such an inspirational story because when I think of it happening to me I really would have no idea how I would react or what I'd do.

Dad must have done a pretty good job. Like you said, I don't have the first clue of how I would come out of that situation with my sanity. Even from his wheelchair, Brock was all smiles at the bowling event. It actually inspires me to be a better person, so I feel like less of a turd in comparison to people like that.

Coach Carr used his pull, and got Elliot's brother transferred to the U of M Medical Center from a hospital in Ohio. U of M has a special unit to treat trauma/accident victims. This was a wonderful gesture not only on Lloyd's part, but on behalf of the entire university. Helping out in a real time of need is what it is all about. Elliot, we are all pulling for you, and your brother.

Didn't Coach Rod, the staff and team do a Mealer charity bowling event last year before the start of the 2008 season? I think I remember hearing some of it broadcasted on the radio on the way home from work. If I recall correctly, Elliot and Brock had no idea that the event was for them. Anyone have an idea if there's plans on any future events for the Mealer family? If not, maybe we could do some type of event from the MGOBLOG Community??? Truly an inspiration.

The ESPN author of this piece was on WTKA with Sam Webb this morning talking about it. She was choking up just talking about what a sad, yet inspiring, story this is. Sounds like it will be pretty good.

It's nice to see that the good side of the Michigan Football Family is finally being shown nationally. As a recent alum and resident at UMHS, I have seen all the good things the football team does for those in need of help - particularly children. Kudos to ESPN for telling this story.

I had that we'll be allright with RichRod. When I heard that RichRod was going to honor his scholarship commitment and then did the bowling fundraiser thing, I knew at that point RichRod was a decent and honorable man. The fact that Mealer is actually seeing playing time a little over a year from this tragedy is a credit to RichRod's staff for getting him back in football condition, and most importantly, to Mealer's work ethic himself. I think Mealer is on the kickoff blocking team if I'm not mistaken...

I think this also proves that Boren was just full of shit. "Lost Family Values." This story shows RR has great family values, he respects the family and the dedication that Mealer and his family have for Michigan. I wish Mealer and his family the best of luck and hope he gets solid playing tie the rest of the season.

...and wow - I remember reading the details about it when it happened, but what an incredibly sad and incredibly inspirational story. I can only imagine how desperate he must have been that night to tear his rotator cuff trying to lift the SUV to free his brother, and how devastating it must have been to lose both his girlfriend and father in the same accident. Thanks to the Mealer and Richer families for letting E:60 cover their story - I hope they can find some solace and happiness watching Elliot in the Maize and Blue, now with everyone cheering for him.
