Durkin to Maryland: The Impact on Recruiting
As we all have heard by now, D.J. Durkin is almost assuredly going to Maryland to be their next head coach. We all know that we'll have to replace his impact on the field, but I wanted to see how his leaving will affect us on the recruiting trail.
Below is a list of current Michigan commits that Durkin is listed as the primary recruiter for on 247. All information was taken from 247.

The obvious similarity in all of these recruits is that they're all from Florida. Given Durkin's past in Florida, it's not surprising he was the main recruiter for all of these players. It is a little surprising that he wasn't the primary recruiter for a single other commit of ours. In terms of potential decommits, this is a small positive for Michigan. While we obviously want all of these kids to come to Michigan, especially if the coaches want them, if any of them did decommit they wouldn't destroy our recruiting class rankings by any means. Of these players, the only one I think would be a big flight risk is Weaver. There are already rumors of him potentially decommitting and one of his two main recruiters is now gone.
I also looked at players Michigan is currently targeting to see how Durkin leaving could affect that. I looked at all players that 247 considers to be Top or High Choice targets for us.

This is a much more high profile list of players, and one that Michigan will feel more of an impact on. This time the common thread isn't the state but the position, as all of these players are LB's that Durkin was a lead recruiter on, which makes sense as Durkin was also our LB coach. Caleb Kelly is the most highly ranked of these players. Losing Durkin hurts, but honestly even with Durkin I don't think we were getting Kelly. Jonathan Jones is the lowest ranked guy on this list. I know very little about his recruitment honestly, but looking at Crystal Balls on 247 I would guess we still have a solid shot at him.
Jackson and Bush are the two recruits where losing Durkin will hurt the most, IMO. Bush is from Florida and his recruitment is very much up in the air right now. Losing his primary recruiter, his position coach, and a guy with ties to his home state are all big negatives, especially since our biggest competition is FSU. My guess is Bush ends up at FSU now, though he stay may have ended up there originally.
Losing Durkin will also hurt in the recruitment of Dontavious Jackson. Jackson is the player who was sitting next to Durkin when this rumor first came out this past weekend and tweeted at a reporter asking the reporter why he was lying. Losing Durkin will hurt here a lot once again, but I think it's more survivable considering Mattison is also recruiting him and Jackson isn't from Florida.
It's also worth noting that Durkin was the lead recruiter for Keyshon Camp. I didn't include him because of the news that came out this weekend saying Camp had re-affirmed his commitment to USC after visiting us. Losing Durkin most likely wipes out any small chance that remained of getting Camp.

I think JH could land the #1419 overall prospect (or better) before eating the day's first steak. We'll survive.

I'm amazed the individual rankings go beyond #1000. At some point they must be just randomly listing guys in there.

Yeah, I'd love to know how they determine the difference between #1896 and #1897. Or what lowly intern is assigned with that thankless task.

I am pretty sure 247 is not ranking all those players, but rather their computer is ranking those players based on their stars from all the sites.

probably has been working on finding a new DC through back channels for the last couple of weeks. I'm sure he will move fast to appoint a new DC.

agree already sent out feelers

Agree on Jackson and Bush esp because Jackson defended Durkin on twitter Sunday.
We shall see how it shakes out - I think harbaugh has an eye for coaching talent as does Meyer which is not discussed much. Already 6 HCs in 5 years of NCAA FBS coaching for Jim - which is amazing.
I am just hoping he goes for a young bright mind under 50 with lots of energy like Durkin was, rather than going to retread.

yep agreed. obviously the ability to coach and put a winning product onto the field each week will always be the most important factor. but id also love to see an energetic, younger coach fill durkins shoes (provided hes sharp and has the chops of course).
having played and gone through the grind in my day, its vital to always have that high energy in the room and on the field and its huge if a coordinator can bring it. by all accounts, durkin was always in top gear, always ready to go and his players not only loved playing for him but enjoyed interacting with him. position coaches and strength coaches spend most individual time with players and theyre also usually the ones bringing the juice but its a nice bonus if coodinators or head coaches (like jimbo) bring it every day like that. not that 60 year old dudes cant (bc they can and do), theres just a different energy, different relationship, different vibe with younger coaches

But it won't help us that's for sure. I'm interested to see those more in the know about recruitings thoughts.

we get a guy that wants to stay a few years and not think about his wallet being filled. These HC jobs open up every year. Him leaving just after one year kind of sucks.

that Durkin being primary on so few recruits might mean that he was always known to be a shorter term solution at DC?
It is entirely possible that Harbaugh brought him on with a mutual understanding that he would have him for 1-2-3/whatever years, depending on what opportunities arose.
Seems weird he wouldn't be assigned several more recruits and more critical ones as DC.....no? Just Bush and Jones solo?
Remember JH had to gather together a staff on fairly short notice and he might have been okay with getting people on to right the ship and deal with longer term hires later on.

I don't know, but 20% ( 4 out of ~20 commits) sounds reasonable spread across a whole coaching staff. Mattison and Jay seem to be counted on to do the heavy liftiing of recruiting with Jim being the closer.
December 2nd, 2015 at 4:59 PM ^
as a recruiter in the recruiting roundups even though he has a solid reputation for it. That's probably not on accident.
December 2nd, 2015 at 6:16 PM ^
Dude, totally what I was thinking when this news started floating around last week. I think Jim already has contacted his guy and an announcment will happen next week.
December 2nd, 2015 at 4:49 PM ^
Jim Harbaugh is the main recruiter for every single player regardless of what 247 says. Durkin might hurt with these guys, but Harbaugh was always the main attraction.

"It is a little surprising that he wasn't the primary recruiter for a single other commit of ours."
Maybe he told Harbaugh he was a one-n-done a year ago.
Maybe Harbaugh is no slouch.

I understand some of the sour grapes over the news of losing Durkin to Maryland...
... but I think a lot of it is a bit misguided.
Any DC that we get that is good enough to DC for us is likely good enough to be lured away for an HC job somewhere else. The alternative is for us to get DCs that simply aren't that good.
Just like it is an asset for Michigan to be able to demonstrate to recruits that our players have success at the professional level, it is an asset for Harbaugh to demonstrate that assistant coaches working with him have excellent prospects to make it to the next level.
So don't worry too much. Harbaugh's developing a program that doesn't seek out DCs, but that DC candidates seek the program out.
Just like on the player level, winning programs RELOAD assistant coaches.
Durkin's "graduation" is a sign that we attract solid assistant coaches, and they get promotions.
I'd be more worried if we had AC's that only left when they were fired.

I wonder how many of the lower ranked recruit Durkin will try to poach

News from SEC country re: Rashan Gary. Auburn and Bama lose DCs but don't bother to reach out to Gary.
https://www.seccountry.com/alabama/mother-of-nations-no-1-recruit-aubur…
Excerpt:
“Just communicate,” Coney said. “Let us know what’s going on. And nobody has. (Southern Cal) has reached out to me, and I spoke with the new coach. Of course, (Jim) Harbaugh has. That’s about it.”
Coney spoke with Harbaugh in light of the news that former defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin was headed to Maryland. According to Coney, Alabama and UGA — programs experiencing recent coaching changes — have not contacted her or her son up until this point.
Meanwhile, two new CBs predict Gary to UM, one from a writer at AL.com.
