Dee Decommitted?

Submitted by TomVH on

[Ed-M: Well, f.

In case you went to bed last night thinking that Michigan will be playing in a bowl game, a competent CEO-type athletic director is in charge of the program, and a 5-star-ish recruit perfect for our offensive system will be enrolling in January, you seem to have been 2/3rds correct.

Rivals reported last night that HB Demetrius Hart intends to decommit from Michigan in favor of Alabama. Tom VH spoke to someone close to Hart and confirmed...that it may be true.:

Regarding Dee Hart, I talked to someone close to him and it looks like the rumors may have legs. Not sure specifics yet.

The news inspired a 500-response thread and at least one user getting caved. As an attempt to restore sanity, and because I trust Tom, I am bumping Tom's diary on the subject (and on other RB options Michigan is in good shape with) to the front page.

At the moment, this seems to be rumor, but believeable. It becomes fact when Dee Hart says it is; until then we have a source close to Dee who says it's fact. For those of you who remember getting burned by Will Campbell only for a "just joking" thing after, this doesn't feel like that.

If you stick a gun to my head and say "okay Misopogon, you tell me why Hart decommitted right this second or I'll blow your brains all over your precious internet," I would say that Dee wants to get his college football career underway at the beginning of January, and Michigan wants to make a decision on who will be his head coach after that. This opinion is entirely conjecture, conflicts with a previous statement made by Hart, and should be taken as no more than that. Expect something more informative and concrete from Brian or Tim later today. Here's Tom: [/Misopogon]

TomVH: Dee Hart Alternatives

Hopefully everyone's calmed down from the Demetrius Hart news. For those of you that follow me on Twitter, I did talk to someone close to him and it looks like he will be decommitting. He's shut down contact, so I wasn't able to get a hold of him or his family. They don't like to disappoint people, so I'm not sure how much contact they'll have. The Michigan coaches will be making a visit out to try to do damage control with Dee. We'll see what ultimately happens with it, things can change.

Moving on from that, Justice Hayes is committed, Michigan is hoping Thomas Rawls makes grades, and there's two more options out there. Tre Mason (5'10", 190 lbs, 4 Star) and Devondrick Nealy (5'10", 175 lbs, 3 Star). Michigan is in great position with Nealy, and we most likely lead.

Mason is one to watch, and I talked to him tonight. He was interested and intrigued with the news of Demetrius Hart. I asked him about Michigan, and he had this to say.

I like Michigan, but Coach Dews has been talking to me about defense lately, and I do not want to play defense. I like Auburn a lot too, but if Michigan wanted me back as a running back then they'd have a good shot at me. I'm looking at depth charts and everything, so we'll see.

You have to think that Michigan had been talking defense with Tre because they had Demetrius Hart and Justice Hayes committed. They didn't have room for a third running back of the same kind. If Demetrius does in fact decommit then I would assume Michigan would tell Tre that they want him on offense again. Just something to keep an eye on if everything goes down as it seems like it will.

Because Dave Brandon should allow the whims of a teenager to drive the decision of who coaches Michigan for the next 5 years.

Brilliant.

Damn, Herbie is gonna eat this up all frackin day long from here til the bowl game. Hell, even beyond. Argh! Get ready for your weekly dose of abandon ship blah blah blah...

I wonder if Magee high-tailed-it down there for this issue...along with having a few other things they had lined up.

I'm very reluctant to claim any recruit commitments for any team since we now know that the Cam Newton Rule is in full swing. I had something ready to post about this but you know what, no more ugly for the week. "Enoughs Enough! April I'm come'in home!" (Kenny Powers B!@#$es! )

+1 x 100 for everyone who has stated the fact that we don't truly have these guys until they're on campus. You'all speaketh the truth!

Let's get to the bowl in Florida and show them how we bring it! Nothing like showing it on the field. It's the biggest stage Dee! The Big House!

For everyone in a panic, I went and had one of my favorite beverages this evening. Helped a lot! I plan on going back for round two. Keep the faith folks, there will be times oh there will be trying times on the road to "our time".

P.S. I'm on the left coast...just in case this post looks ridiculous at this time of night!

Thank you, Tom. It's good to hear we have options and still a chance to sway Dee.

Swamy, this may not have been your intention, but it's not fair to Dee to kind of suggest that a Newton-like situation is going on. He has always wanted to enroll early, so he could be going into an unknown situation here.

I know he said that a coaching switch wouldn't have an effect, but you can't blame him if he changed his mind on that. Imagine if you were set to enter a graduate program and suddenly they got rid of your desired academic program or your grad school advisor left. You'd probably freak out and begin considering your #2 and 3 options again. We're all frustrated, but from all accounts (from Tom and others) it sounds like he's a good guy and I'm sure he's just making a decision that he thinks is best for him.

Maybe he'll hear about RR's speech and standing ovation and be inspired. Please...

And I hate to beat a dead Horse, but I truly believe that DB has made the decision all ready and has fired RR and JH is all ready hired.

As much as I did not want to talk about this because there is no proof, it seems it is all falling in line now.

1-Listen to RR Pre OSU press conference, right in the beginning he mentions something along the lines of it being his last Press conference...of the season, but the way he says it there seemed to be a underline tone to it, he seemed extremely upset when he said it.

2-As stated in other post, no school hires a new coach in Jan, unless something has happened past the end of the season and it has nothing to do with win/loss.

3-Why would he be risking recruits to de-commit?

I think JH must all ready have been hired, this can be the only reason why DB has said he will wait until the season is over, which means after Stanford plays in their Bowl game. I am starting to believe now that this deal has been done for quite some time now and JH asked it to not be announced until after his Bowl game.

I realy did not want to believe this and get into the hipe of it without any proof, but nothing else makes sense now except JH will be our Coach in 2011, and I sure hope I am wrong!

If Harbaugh is already a "done deal," I don't think DB would be sticking to his guns so hard about waiting until after the entire season is complete to make his performance evaluation.

I work at a big company, and if the CEO said something like that, but then after the fact it came to light / became clear that his mind had already been made up but he deceived folks about it, there would be a shit storm.

As a former corporate executive, I don't think DB would put his credibility on the line by insisting that he hasn't made a final decision when he has.

Personally, I want to believe that Harbaugh is indeed a done deal, and I don't think that Brandon will fire RR unless he has that side of things locked up, but publicly insisting that it is not done isn't a tenable position if it really is done...

If JH wants to be the next coach, he better be all in. And all in means wanting to start working on this program right now, because it is going to need all the energy he has. Do we really want a coach that is willing to say, I will work and give the program my attention when it is convenient for me?

You underestimate the sense of duty that a coach should have towards his players. It is hard enough to leave young men you recruited and who have sacrificed for your vision and passion. It is quite another thing to leave them on the eve of their hour of glory, for which they sweat blood and tears under your leadership. If being a Michigan man means anything, it means loyalty, duty, and honor. If JH is all he is cracked up to be, these things will determine his actions.

In all honesty I dont think that there is any in between the lines going on here. According to posts "im going to wait till after the bowl game" means.

1) Rich Rod is already gone and JH is already been contacted. JH just wants to coach Stanford in thier bowl game and then will be the next HC at Mich. However, if this was true then DB probably wouldnt/shouldnt be saying that RR still could be the coach, he should just stay silent on the issue.

2) Rich Rod is staying. Well this is stupid, why even say anything if you're DB at all if you already know you're retaining him for another year? Not just with recruits (which im sure he is aware of) but for people in general. What I mean is, why F with a whole group of human beings like that when you already know what your decision is?

Therefore I think its option (3) He doesnt know yet. If Mich comes out and has a great bowl game then yeah he can have another year. Or possibly it depends on other coaches on the staff and who RR would be willing to let go.

I'm all for speculation, but because the only reasonable thing here is that DB doesnt actually have a decision yet, I'm not buying any of this he's fired/ he's staying stuff.

It is impossible for Rodriguez to have been fired and Harbaugh to have already been hired, and that for at least two reasons:

First, hiring is a public process that cannot be short-circuited by private deals. I suppose that there may be some conversations among parties, but even that is unlikely, given the number of people who would have some knowledge of such talks. The leak factor would be huge.

Second, Brandon would be putting the university, along with the football program, at risk, both legally (see point 1), and with regard to perception and reputation. If you think the garbage storm that arose during the last search was a huge mess, you can't imagine what back room shenanigans would engender.

Your one clearly true point is that there is no proof for the claim of "already hired." Frankly, I think the speculations are simply part of the pent-up need to immediately know what's happening on the part of much of our fan base.

After all, it sucks to have neither knowledge of, or control over, something we're so invested in.

If you mean that a contract isn't signed. Yup, you're right. If you mean that it isn't possible for a coach of another team to tell you" I've always wanted to coach in Ann Arbor, I will come, and I will be happy with a salary of 2.5M/year", then you are very very naive.

One of two things has already happened:

1. RR is staying. DB is satisfied with the way things are going internally and sees vast improvement in W/L over the next two years. Just as has been reported, the formal evaluation will happen after the bowl game and the results will be communicated then. The beauty of it is that there's a month for people to calm down from two blowouts, and a Floriday bowl game to talk about when news is given.

2. JH has already reached an agreement to come. I'd bet against this, but it's the only other option. I think DB wants to give RR his 4th year. He thinks that improvement will be there. It would be unfair to let RR go this year. JH will still be available if it doesn't work out for RR. DB isn't going to fire one coach because another "might not" be available in the future.

Dave Brandon should just announce that RR is going to stay until the remainder of his contract. I think 3 years is not enough to turn a program around especially after what happened in the first year. DB should ignore the press and fans impatience and give RR a chance to see his project through to completion. Firing RR will not only effect recruiting it will lead to possible transfers and will make it harder to convince a quality coach to come to Michigan. Who will want to come to Michigan and face a similar situation RR did when he arrived knowing that he really has only 3 years to turn the program around and beat tOSU, MSU, Nebraska? By remaining silent DB has created uncertainty in the minds of players, recruits, fans etc. which clearly has started to take its toll. Do the right thing and just announce RR is staying!

While I agree that DB has mismanaged the situation to a certain degree, you have to respect some reasoning for waiting. The season isn't over. Maybe RR blows the bowl game in embarassing fashion and this changes DB's mind. I respect DB's decision to stick to his timetable, but it also sucks for recruiting. I'd still much rather he come out in full support now, but that's not going to happen, for a month at least.

WolvinLA2

December 3rd, 2010 at 10:57 AM ^

OK guys, we really can't know whether or not he mismanaged anything until something happens. What if the end result is somethign we all like, or that many of us like, but it necessitated waiting? You can't look at a half done job and say he did it wrong.

Like someone said above, what if he has decided on Harbaugh but either he wants to let JH finish his season or JH said he'll only come if he finishes his season before he's announced. Maybe RR has a feeling that's happening so he's slacking with the recruits.

Not everyone would like that scenario, but if JH came and won a bunch of football games, no one would say DB mismanaged anything. Let's be a little patient before we decide that DB screwed the pooch.

It is conceivable that there are extenuating circumstances that may be forcing this to be managed in the way DB is managing it. Therefore, regardless of how it appears, I don’t think it is possible to accurately and definitively conclude that the situation is being completely mismanaged.

Get yourself a cup of coffee, get away from your keyboard for a minute, and then come back and read this thread. See how it goes; from an informative, substantive post by a real recruiting expert to... you. Spouting opinions about coaching changes. The same kinds of coaching-change-opinions that are in about 100 other threads, each with 100 similar opinions. And now, 101.

Tom, you know I've been hyping Tre Mason for a while now -- asking you questions about him when you couldn't give answers because there was no info to give. I'm a big Tre Mason fan -- fake 4.3 speed is what we need in this offense.

From article dated Oct 12, 2010 on ESPN,

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/football/news/story?id=5677511

Dee Hart specifically said: "I liked Michigan either way and if he (RR) were to leave it wouldn't affect me because I think I can play in any offensive system," Hart said. "So it really wasn't my concern.

He also said that he and HaHa would not pressure each other to go to their choice of school and that they push each other to be the best they can be. They want to see who will be better. No kidding either both are up for AA Player of the Year award.

Dee said: "But we'll find out for sure in 2012, because that's when Michigan plays Alabama. I'm happy for HaHa and he's happy for me. It's all about finding the right fit for you."

So what happened in the last month and a half? Is it as simple as our 7-5 record? Surely even Dee Hart knew that we weren't ready to beat Wisconsin and Ohio State. Most people were expecting a 7-5 perhaps 8-4 season at best. What do you all think could be the reason? Could it be...Could it be Satan? "Son, if you sell me your soul, I will guarantee that you win a national championship with the Crimson Devils....i mean Alabama..." No snake oil here...just a Faustian bargain.

I really hope that the coaches are able to convince Dee Hart that he made the right choice in the first place by choosing Michigan. He has a legit shot of seeing playing time next year. Besides his gut instinct was to pick Michigan. Dee Hart go with your gut! Go Blue!

Would he be so hard headed as to not change his game plan when it was not working? Would he continue to pound the ball up the middle when we were down by a couple of scores and time was running out In the 4th quarter?

Brandon needs to be open to adjusting his game plan. He stubbornness is a detriment to the recruiting class, losing commitments and not closing the deal on the top guys on our board.

The only scenario that makes any sense to me for Brandon holding the line is he will fire RR and doing so now would cause a shit storm like it did previously which he wants to avoid. I truly hope this is not his plan as I believe in RR and believe we are headed in the right direction.

Misopogon - equating your opinion about why a 17 year old kid decided to de-commit from Michigan with someone shooting you in the head, while nothing more than metaphor, is still inappropriate and offensive to people who have actually had close family friends pass away in horrifying fashion.

jg2112

December 3rd, 2010 at 10:44 AM ^

It's still inappropriate. Yeah, I'm sensitive towards comments about suicide and murder, and rightly so. We could do a lot better by leaving those metaphors out of discussions about recruiting no matter how innocent. And if you've ever followed me on this board, you'd know getting upset about the college decisions of 17 year old boys is not something that gets me emo.

From my perspective, the writer's intent is an important consideration. You've been here long enough to know that hyperbole is a common rhetorical device. I wouldn't use a reference to an actual recent murder or suicide in a metaphorical fashion, but common expressions such as "if you put a gun to my head" are going to be fair game because I find it very important to maximize writers' liberty in order to maintain a high quality of writing. There are tens of thousands of individuals who read this blog, and each have their own personal sensibilities, and not offending any of those sensibilities, even if each seems entirely reasonable on individual inspection, would effectively make this site bland.

I won't ask you to not wince when you see an idiom that relates to a personal tragedy, but I do ask, for the benefit of the blog's voice, only that you tolerate it because an overwhelming majority of readers don't wince at such things.

In personal experience, I had a close family member commit suicide by putting a gun to his head (January 9th, 1991, a Wednesday, it was snowing; I was just 11 and can't remember what I got for my birthday for 4 years either side of that but I can relate every single second of that night as if it just happened). I got counseling for this. Using the phrase "to put a gun to my head" colloquially is a personal victory for me because I can separate that from my uncle's suicide. This took a long time to do, but I am infintely glad that things like my mother's birthday (Jan. 8) and snow, and the landing mid-way down the basement stairs of my aunt's house, and other things I associated with that are now just things again.

Conversely, my wife's family is largely defined by her grandfather's murder in the early 1970s. Misopogal's uncle never got over it, and he still can't react healthily to many aspects of the murder (including any mention of Detroit); that sensitivity is a defining characteristic of his personality and it prevents him from having a completely normal life, especially because he relives the whole thing every time he comes back up here to visit his mother and family. This makes me think that how you heal and how you react to things related to The Thing is a conscious decision, but also that choosing to disassociate things from The Thing is much harder to do than most people -- even those who've gone through it -- give credit for.

This I stress: I'm not at all telling you to "get over it!" You never get "over" it. What happens is eventually you have a scar instead of an open wound, and the benefit of a scar is that you don't feel it every time you use that body part anymore.
