Dave Brandon Unveils Commemorative Lloyd Brady 2012 Sugar Bowl Uniforms

Submitted by Ghost of Bo on

ANN ARBOR, Michigan (AP) -

University of Michigan Athletic Director Dave Brandon unveiled a brand new look for the Wolverines football team in preparation for their January 3rd Sugar Bowl appearance against the Virginia Tech Hokies. The announcement caused a firestorm of controversy amongst boosters, university officials, and unemployed arm-chair blog-critics alike.

The audacious uniform design features a University of Michigan student known in fan circles as Lloyd Brady. Brady is screen-printed prominently above the familiar block M logo, holding a spoonful of sugar in rapturous delight to celebrate Michigan's BCS berth.

Ryan VanBergen models the new Wolverines designs and pensively contemplates suicide.

"This is all about extending the Michigan brand," said Brandon in front of an assembly of visibly shocked press correspondants and fans. "Lloyd Brady is an emblem of the plugged-in, 24/7 blogosphere. We worked hand-in-hand with Adidas to make sure he is presented in full splendor. These uniforms harken back to the great traditions of the past while looking forward, boldly, to the coming day when the tail of internet fandom will inevitably wag the dog."

When asked how the idea began, Brandon detailed a wild night of inspiration. "Well, the nebula of the idea started one evening at a local bar with Jim Brandstatter. Beers led to shots, shots led to harder stuff, and, well... Let's just say cocaine played a role. Jim was keyed up, to say the least. Rambling on about Michigan Replay, about how the spread offense was really an outgrowth of the homosexual agenda... lots of wild ideas. I saw his white, powdery mustache and made a comment about how apropos it looked in light of our sugar bowl appearance. Once we got on the subject of sugar, the rest is history."

From there, a team of over three-hundred Adidas designers set to work creating a Sugar Bowl uniform worthy of the annals of Michigan history. "I think, clearly, we're entering a new era in sportswear," said Marty Tisdale, senior game apparel supervisor at Adidas. "The front of the uniform makes a bold statement. This isn't your father's Michigan Wolverines, no way. This uniform is the sportswear equivalent of social media - it gets people talking. In fact, the uniforms are outfitted with smart chips and keypads sewn into the fabric. During timeouts, players can tweet messages, via voice recognition, to fans in real-time with the push of a button."

The eye-catching uniform backsides are sure to turn heads on Jan. 3rd.

"The front of the uniform is really the tip of the iceberg," said Tisdale. "The backside is where we really pushed the envelope. The forty-two block M's on the back represent Michigan's forty-two Big Ten championships. As you can also see, we've tastefully adorned the uniform with a ghost-twill, sweat-wicking logo decal of our marketing partners, Domino Sugar. We hope the fans will appreciate the surprising blend of unrestrained whimsy and soul-crushing corporate fellatio."

When asked what he thought of the design, head coach Brady Hoke muttered something indistinct, then caught Brandon's stern gaze. He then offered, rather half-heartedly, "Well, you know, I think they're... tremendous."

The only coach who didn't seem on-board with the design was offensive coordinator Al Borges, who missed the press conference. He walked into the Schembechler Hall after his lunch break, took one look at the uniform concept, and turned away. After minutes of staring blankly out into the distance, hands in pockets, he said, "What have we done? God in heaven, what have we done?"

Brandon pays no mind to criticism, however. "The future is a scary thing to some people. I mean, think of the first facemasks. At the time, the guys wearing them looked pretty faggy. These are the next step in that evolution."

If Wolverine fans are unhappy with the Sugar Bowl uniforms, they can take heart; they are not permanent. Brandon also announced plans to wear different uniforms for each and every game next season, a total of twelve unique Adidas Tech-Fit designs. "Right now we're experimenting with different looks. Brandstatter and I like black-on-black, maize-on-maize, really eye-catching stuff." Then, with a furtive snort from a rolled hundred-dollar bill, Brandon added, "And of course, there's always white-on-white."

Until you get to the last paragraph and it talks about how DB is planning on 12 different uniforms for next year. This is where I realized it was a farce. First of all, the Wolverines will need 14 different uniforms for next year after they kick Sparty's teeth in and make a trip to the B16 Championship game, and second, DB is way too stupid to start thinking about next year already You're giving him way too much credit. He is still busy taking credit for all of the upgrades and " innovations" that he has implemented that were actually started by previous UM employees that were far smarter than he is. Well done on the post, though. I likely.

Where did you come up with the totally Hi-larious idea that Brandon and Brandstatter  were bigoted towards homosexuals?  I thought that added to the hilarity to no end.

For the record I dont think Cook's reaction to the bowl uniforms(Which you have to admit are pretty cool) has anything to do with him being butthurt from the Hoke hire.    And I dont think that butthurt feeling had anything to do with Cook promoting this borderline libelous satire to the front page.

Nope, promoting his slappy's character attack doesn't reflect poorly on Cook's character at all.  No sir.

But just to tally up the score:

Brady Hoke/David Brandon 13(I threw in points for the Big Chill, Under the Lights, and introducing the NCAA to the pimp hand), Brian Cook/Rich Rodriguez 3(You get a point for the State jerseys).

I've still got to call scoreboard on this one.

I agree that the gay slur at the end was uncalled for, but otherwise, dude, take a pill.  This post has nothing to do with Brian Cook, Brady Hoke, or Rich Rodriguez.  It's satire.  You've apaprently got quite the complex when it comes to joking about Dave Brandon.  OMG YOU'RE DAVE BRANDON!!!

You have a point about the homosexual slur; I'm sure some would excuse it by pointing out that it's just one more horrible thing the parody is putting in the mouth of this terrible and obviously fictitious version of David Brandon, and obviously it's not endorsed by the author... but it does still amount to casual use of a slur that needs to go away.

On everything else, you're blowing things out of proportion as much as the OP.  Brian et al. have been making fun of Pro Combat uniforms for years, and now Michigan has jumped in headfirst.  There are obvious, non-insane-grudge-related reasons for this post to fit right in with the bent of the blog.

And, man, I don't know if I've ever seen the term "slappy" used in a way that betokened any thought on the part of the writer, or convinced me of anything except that I didn't want to hang out with him.

You're upset about a satirical poke at an AD who is clearly in the thrall of money-grubbing marketing mania and full-on embrace of the over-wrought Michigan Man meme, realized in the piece through imagined casual homophobic remarks by that AD but feel completely fine creating your own scorecard that allots imaginary points for the same AD having a "pimp hand", firming your advocacy for violence against women forced into prostitution?  Okay...

And I acknowledged it.  If my response has reached the eyes of any abused prostitutes they have my heartfelt and sincere apologies.

Sorry I wont have more time to discuss this topic further, I'm going to be busy visiting other forums, writing satires where a comically bitter/butthurt Brian Cook drops racial slurs on Desmond Howard, Mike Hart and Braylon Edwards.  Should be a good time.

could be percieved as negative toward women and/or men (not just to prostitutes) in a similar fashion to the way you are claiming the op did towars for gay people? You have to,  even with the blind eye you are turning to it...

Also, speaking of "butt hurt" why are you getting so bent in these forums all the time? This is all supposed to be for recreation/fun.

I said I was sorry.  Twice.  I will not use the term again.

You do concede that that term has been used literally THOUSANDS of times in this forum.   To my knowledge this is the first time "faggy" has made its debut.  Also the first time the words "promoting the homosexual agenda" have been put in anyone's mouth in jest.

Try using that type of qualified "sorry" with your spouse, parents or "insert loved one here" and I bet you they don't accept that you are truly sorry.

This really is going nowhere, but I am still curious as to why you get into such vigorous debates/ wars aginst the viewpoints that the various thread creaters have.

For once little buddy I actually am interested in what you have to say.  Did Brandon make some kind of homophobic comment in the past that this is alluding to?  Or was it thrown in there strictly for the purpose of libel/alienating 15-20% of the fan base?

that wasn't total nonsense. And I agree with it.

If you had simply stated: I disagree with the use of the phrase "homosexual agenda" and the word "faggy" and would advise you refrain from you using those terms...

Well then I would be on board with you. Instead you tried to make an absurd point while using the above "homophobia" as a distraction over the real, idiotic points you were trying to make.

You clearly missed the point of the entire thread, then tied it into entities that having nothing to do with anything but your own personal vendettas. As always, you come back to things you want people to get over, but can't quite seem to find your way away from, because you have nothing worthwhile to add to any discussion outside of those few topics, unless it is made-up facts.

On a side note: Some gay people take offense to the phrase "butthurt". You may think this is a joke, but it is not. I would ask that you refrain from using it in the future. Just like some, not all women would be offended by the phrase "pimp hand" - not just prostitutes - but regular, everyday women are struck by men who use their physical presence to intimidate them, be it force or threat. Thus being so self-righteous while offending several groups of people is quite hypocritical. Well done.

I would advise you remove Mike Hart from your avatar, as I'm sure he would not want to be associated with an individual such as yourself. You are an embarassment to the Michigan fanbase.

To my knowledge this phrase has little to do with homosexuality.  I cannot find a decent source for its exact origin, but in common usage it suggests over-sensitivity after a sound spanking.  I suppose this could be offensive to naughty toddlers.  Obviously, my apologies on that one go out to you in particular.

My problem is with the ridiculously hypocritical double standard that exists on this board.  You remember "hypocrisy" dont you?  We can have a review session if you need one.  At any rate, that hypocrisy allows for personal attacks(such as the one you've just made...and believe me I really do value your opinion on my worth as a human being) so long as they support the company line.

I really hope for Brian's sake that he just published the thread without reading it.  However, based on Brian's irrational hatred of David Brandon(as evidenced by his reaction to Under the Lights and the bowl uniforms)  I'm just not sure that this is the case.

- which was hardly anything malicious - comes only from my disbelief at your immense amount of ignorance towards the situation you've gotten yourself into on this thread.

Some gay people find that phrase offensive. Doesn't matter where it comes from, they do.

If you want to play the PC police, you need to "toe the company line" as you say.

However, where you fail miserably, is that you don't understand that fake-Brandon and fake-Brandstatter's use of "slurs" in this satire are to display that their oblivious nature towards things people are sensitive about (it actually makes sense that you wouldn't catch that) and thus would be ignorant of the fan reaction to the fake jersey above. This is a technique used - with these same phrases actually - on much more public forums such as The Office and The Colbert Report. It is not intended to be malicious.

What pains me most about being associated with someone like you, is that you attempted to guilt people into ignoring how dumb your original post was by playing faux-angry about these "homophobic slurs" to defer the argument towards that, rather than how off-base you were. Of course, in turn you used several offensive phrases yourself.

Well done.

You're comparing a couple of phrases, "Butthurt" and "Pimphand", which you openly admit are as common as LOLcats on this forum, to universally recognized hate speech?  In what world is that a valid argument?

I find your suggestion that there was no malice intended towards David Brandon to be absolutely laughable.  The entire purpose of the exercise was to ridicule him.  Do YOU even believe the things you are writing?

And if you are trying to say that homosexuals shouldn't be offended because there was no malicious intent towards them...Dude, intent doesn't even matter.  Hate speech is hate speech, whether it follows some convention of satire or not.  I feel like an ass for even repeating it.

Switching gears a tad, if you want to discuss some alternate causes for Brian's irrational hatred of David Brandon, I am all ears.  That is clearly up for debate...

I'll concede that nearly every phrase in the English language could be construed as offensive to someone.  But seriously, take a step back man.  There is a difference between politically incorrect and hate speech.  Do you really want to be the guy that defends that?  Why?

December 16th, 2011 at 2:22 PM ^

was regarded as "common" at some point in time was it not?

As is, nothing that was used was hate speech.

The rest of your post was already answered, but clearly you are incapable of understanding anything that doesnt fit into your narrow viewpoint, or you are unable to acknowledge how wrong you are.

When I spoke about Brandon, his use of the term "faggy" was used to describe how ignorant he would be to people's reaction towards that word...much like he is ignorant towards a large portion of the fanbase on many issues. Was this the best taste in words? No. I already gave you that as your only saving grace on this entire thread. Was it enough to invalidate his poin or save the fact that you completely lost the plot? No.

Once again, you are pretending to be outraged over something to conceal the fact you have embarassed yourself on this thread...which is disgusting.

As someone who takes perjoritave words about homosexuality personally, I have to say that the line about the spread almost made me fall off the couch laughing.  The second one made my blood pressure rise a bit, but I quickly remembered a great source of knowledge:

Times are changing, and the coke-fueled journey to sugar britches is going to have a few bumps in the road.  I think the intentions were good and Ghost of Bo wasn't trying to be hurtful to anyone.  I know I laughed all the way to the end.  Can we let South Park solve the issue?

You captured the fever-pitch mood of the mass-marketing, multiple-uni's-as-the-new-status-quo atmosphere that permeates major collegiate sports nowadays.   I call it the Oregon Effect.   Or Oregon Disease.   Or Oregon Syndrome.  Take your pick.

My life is actually pretty good.  Good job.  Beautiful wife.  Nice house.  Nice car.  Twins on the way.

I'm just kind of curious as to what's going on in your life that sight unseen you need to call anyone a "stick-in-the-mud, dipshit asshat" that needs to "swallow a gun barrel".  I get that personal attacks in defense of the company line have pretty much been what has passed for intelligent debate around here for a while now.    Hell, they're just about encouraged.  But it still makes me worry for you a little bit.

Is there anything you want to talk about?

Im not in any position of power, but I hope that those of you that are...are bombing Brandon's email and voice mail with protests vs. the Clowniforms.

All jokes aside, putting the team in those ridiculous getups for the Sugar Bowl is borderline disgraceful and certainly distasteful.

It didnt work the first time vs. Sparty...so why roll it out again Brandon?

is a better outlet for your anxieties on corporations and conservatives (you chose not to include the ghost of Bo in that bar room conversation?  Ironic.)  I'd suggest a similar tactic for the Rush L/Foxnews set pining for poorly disguised attacks on liberals.

Imaginary or not, spewing this kind of homophobic filth out of the mouths of our AD and long time broadcaster is grotesque.  Front paging it is a fucking embarassment.
