Craig Roh update from Fred Roh.

Submitted by TomVH on
I spoke with Craig Roh's father, Fred, today. He gave me an update about what Craig has been up to, and how he has improved with regards to football.

Craig is very involved with Campus Crusade, and Athletes in Action on campus. "He's down in New Orleans right now with those two groups on a mission trip. They're helping out with Katrina, cleaning up, and I believe they're helping build a house," Fred told me. Craig has been there since this past saturday, and Fred expects him back this weekend.

Roh has always been a good student, and always been very motivated to help the community. "He's been involved with a lot of these organizations on campus, and a little more involved with Athletes in Action. He got pretty involved over the summer, he's always been very into his religion, and just always been a good student. He was working last summer with a few mentor type things, too. I know they do a lot of local type services, and this is the first time he's gone out on a trip like this," said Fred.

Spring practice is coming soon, and Craig has also made it a point to stay focused with his improvement on the field as well. "He's up to 255 now. He ended the season at 240, so he's already gained about 15 pounds. The coaches said they want him at 255, or maybe 260. He's had tremendous increases in all his exercises, too. I don't know the exact numbers, by I know he's increased his bench, squat, and everything else,"

Injury seemed to plague a lot of the team this past season, and that included Craig, as well. "He got three stingers throughout the season in his neck, so he couldn't do any upper body stuff. It was really after the Illinois game that he couldn't do any of the upper body workouts during the season. As soon as the season was over, he rehabbed the nerve, and is ready to go. It's hard to activate the muscle the right way with nerve problems, so it was difficult for him during the season. He's good to go now, though," said Fred. "Everyone was concerned about his size last year, and I don't think that will be the case this year."

Is he playing Football and looking like a D-1 player? IIRC Craig's dad was pretty high on his potential as well last year at least. Any Michigan interest there?

His brother is only a freshman. Fred said he thinks he'll get a shot at varsity this coming season. He wants me to come out and see a game, so I'll be able to tell you more next year. He is definitely good, though. Andre Yruo...I don't feel like looking it up, said he's going to be a really good player, so there's definitely hype there. If I remember right, he's already around 6'1 or 6'2 as a frosh.

Isn't it incredible that New Orleans is still rebuilding? But on a brighter note, Craig sounds like an awesome guy. I just wouldn't want to be opposite him on the field.

Having been there myself, I'm surprised they've made as much progress as they have. Holy crap, that place was leveled. It is hard for me to describe the devastation. The story of New Orleans (just like every other city nature tries to take back) is an American story of tenacity that I'm sure Stanzi would endorse.

Make me proud to be a Michigan Alum. Its nice to see that not everyone kills people, murders people, steals from you, steals from me, whatever. Demar Dorsey should hang around with this crew in the fall, I'd like to see how the Freep would cover that...

That's pretty much why he came here. This is where the writers at the FREEP stop their coverage. They'll mention he has a rough background but then when the kid makes a good decision to come to a place that will help him develop in more ways than just football, that's glossed over. I think Roh and many others will be the saving grace for Dorsey. As a result, as Dorsey gets older, he will pass that same tutelage on to future incoming players.

Club of New Orleans the past year or two has had a little get together revolving around when those groups come down to do work. i haven't gotten any emails about it - wish we'd had the opportunity to reward them with a good meal.

Thank you so much for raising such an outstanding young man in all facets of life. The University and it's fanbase will gladly accept any more Roh's that you want to send this way.

If there's a strength to be found on Michigan's 2010 defense, it's probably going to be that front 3 or 4 guys of Van Bergen, Campbell, Martin and DeathRoh. Damn are they young though.

For many reasons, Michigan is lucky to have Craig Roh. What a standup kid. I am excited to see what a physically mature Roh is capable of. His talent is tremendous. Anecdotes like this only make it easier to root for him.

I've been saying this since he was recruited: Craig Roh will be the best player of the class of 2009. Hopefully he can maintain his speed at 255 or 260, because I'd love him to stay on that weak side and terrorize quarterbacks.

Roh is a Michigan man through and through. Great pickup by Rich Rod. With the national leader in tackles for loss gone, how much attention does Roh receive this year?

Great to hear Craig is staying so involved outside of football. Sounds like he's keeping his ducks in a roh.

Fred Roh is amazing with his updates and love for Michigan, Craig Roh is a beast on the field and, little Roh is soon to be another Michigan beast on the field too! Go Blue!

If adidas were smart, there'd be plenty of #88 jerseys in stock, pronto. Here's an email transcript I sent my buddies on August 10, 2009:
Did you guys watch video (michigan.rivals.com) of the first practice? Thoughts: * team as a whole looks way sharper than last year...more athletic, more skilled, more crisp * people have been talking about denard robinson's zip on his throws, which i agree, but tate easily throws the best ball...hard to compete with a 10.4 100m, though * this just in: brandon graham is a stud * this just in (for real): craig roh #88 is a stud...wow, he looked lightning quick; he needs to play and i bet he sees significant PT (reality check: need to see him when the hitting starts) * loved the practice jerseys...hope the game jerseys on the road look like that; don't like it for home (don't hate it either)--stick with traditional home jerseys

I am not sure who impresses me more, Craig or his Dad. Coming from a close knit family and being very close to my father, I love to see this. As an aside, there is no way Mr. Roh lets Craig go to UM if the family values are lacking as a few certain Morans have suggested. If you want to know about the values at the UofM, look at the kids who attend and you will have your answer. The Roh's could be the poster family for family values.
