Composite 2013 FB Recruit Rankings

By turd ferguson — March 11th, 2012 at 12:36 AM — 31 comments

Having done something similar last year, I just combined the Scout, Rivals, and 247 football recruit rankings into one.  The purpose is to help sort through the confusion that comes from seeing three different rankings for each kid.  I provide a little analysis below the rankings, but I’ll leave the rest to you.

What to know about how I did this:

I started with the Scout 300, Rivals 250, and 247’s top 247 and removed all of the prospects who were ranked by only one of them.  Therefore, every prospect below appeared on at least two of those three lists.  The reasons for this are that: (1) it keeps the rankings to a manageable size and (2) if only one site really likes a prospect, it might just be an outlier.

If a kid was ranked by two services but not the third, I imputed a ranking for the third service.  To do this, I added 100 to the lowest ranking provided by that service.  In other words, a kid who wasn’t ranked in Scout’s top 300 received a Scout ranking of 400; a kid who wasn’t ranked in Rivals’ top 250 received a Rivals ranking of 350; and a kid who wasn’t ranked in 247’s top 247 received a 247 rank of 347.

I took one more step before finding the average ranking for each prospect.  I incorporated the median ranking across those three services.  Therefore, a prospect’s mean ranking, which is the basis of these rankings, comes from an average of his real/imputed Scout ranking, Rivals ranking, 247 ranking, and the median of the three.  I added the median to mitigate the effect that one outlier ranking would have on a prospect’s mean.

Okay, enough with that.

Edit: I just added position rankings.  Note that I used the positions listed by Scout.

The rankings:

        Scout Rivals 247 med (avg)

A quick perusal of the list indicates it is highly likely M ends up with the top-rated OLine in the country.  There are only 12 elite offensive linemen (in top 200) available with rankings above M's lowest ranked commitment.  Texas may end up closest with 3 top-ranked linemen so far.  I like our chances to now recruit one of the few remaining RB's in the top 100.

I must admit, that i am quite impressed with the work. That had to take quite a bit of time to complete.

But anyways, it is so great to see how this class is shaping up to be. Realistically, i think we have a great shot at landing SEVERAL more prospects on that list (Ty Isaac, Eddie Vanderdoes?, EJ Levenberry, Laquon Treadwell, Henry Poggi, Dorian O'Daniel, Devon Allen, Ben Gedeon, Donovan Munger) with a more outside shot with (S'ua Cravens, Kendall Fuller, and Joe Mathis).

I would throw in some others (Ethan Pocic, Preist Willis, Cory Luke, and Darian Hicks) but at this time i would have to believe we are probably full at those positions.

That was just a quick run through...anybody i miss?

I'll probably do it again after the summer camps but before these kids' senior seasons. Truthfully, part of the reason that I posted this now is that ESPN hasn't released rankings yet, sparing us the "Are ESPN's rankings worthless?" debate.

It doesn't take as long as you might think with software that enables you to quickly merge different data sets and execute a few commands, but it would be nice if the sites all used the same spelling of the prospects' names.

Great post. Have you considered having two lists, one with outliers removed and one without? For example, Texas' QB commit Swoopes is criminally underrated by 247 and that's really affecting his ranking. I think it would shake things up.

That's a good question.  My position on this is that when you only have three observations, you really don't want to throw away any data -- and it's kind of strange to talk about outliers to begin with.  I put the median in there to try to limit the impact of the most extreme values, but they obviously still have an effect (rightly so, in my view).

You can get a decent feel for how much of an effect they have by using different values when you're taking the mean.  Take, for example, Tyrone Swoopes, the kid you mentioned whom 247 isn't crazy about.  If everyone else's rankings stayed the same (they wouldn't), then Swoopes would be ranked:

  • #23 using my method (using mean of 10-11-70-11)
  • #7 without 247's extreme ranking (mean of 10-11)
  • #27 using my method without the median (mean of 10-11-70)

Again, my view is that knowing that one service doesn't like a prospect as much as the other services do gives us useful information that shouldn't be dropped, but that's just my view.

If you're posting from Excel, a simple copy/paste will do the trick. However, if you make any errors, be prepared to have to correct them in Excel and copy/paste again due to the formatting being a little different when you try to edit on MGoBlog.

The tables look a little different than the ones you can create here, but I think they look fine. If you want a preview of what they look like, you can take a look at any of my diaries compared to, say, the UFR's Brian does.
