Collation of Beaver Stories?

Submitted by Topher on
(Not, not your personal beaver stories. Sicko.) The wild news about the Beaver "decommit" (why do we call them commitments when they can be broken without penalty?) has sent the mgoblogosphere into wild consternation. On a Stanford board today, a poster put up the following: "The reason how and from the Notre Dame board is below: "Beaver, the QB, said TU coach Todd Graham discussed the importance of growing as a person away from the football field, an emphasis that Michigan didn’t approach. It made a difference, the player said." There is a slam if there ever was one." Yes, that's him quoting from "the Notre Dame board," without a primary-source attribution. This to me screamed either "apocryphal internets thingy" or "crap fed to recruiting reporter like the bogus stories you give when you are breaking up with someone." If anything, it sounds like Graham and Malzahn told him he'd play in a cooler offense. Also, browsing the MGoDiaries (sounds like an HBO series) there is a story popping up about Beaver's mom calling Rodriguez, or Rodriguez's mom calling Beaver's coach, or somesuch. Several posters felt this story had apocryphal written all over it, while at least one asserted it was true (without support). Anybody who can comment on sources, reliability and smell-testing, please do so we can get these things straight. No need to be walking around dealing with bogus stories if we don't have to.

to believe that Forcier's dad would know that information, since he talked to the Michigan coaches. Also, a quick google search turned up this: "Forciers Fired Up SuperPrep.com - Dec 19, 2008 "Beaver's mom is the one who called Rod and told him." "Coach Rod said to me that it was probably better that Shavodrick did it (decommitted) now rather ..."

I confirmed with a couple people that this is what happened, and that his Mom played a big role in all of this. Ricardo also said that Beaver was intimidated by the crowd at the Michigan State game, and he felt like he didn't fit in. I'm not sure what "didn't fit in" part means, since he was talking to a lot of kids this whole time. Beaver also changed his phone number immediately, or cancelled it, so he couldn't be contacted.

Or we could just not care why he chose to go somewhere else, focus on the recruits/targets that we do have, and avoid dealing with the story altogether.

regarding the beaver decommitment, here's my 2 cents if they mean anything. more so than big will, or bryce mcneal, newsome, etc, beaver decommitting pissed me off the most out of all of them. it was just the way that he handled it. Just days before he decommitted he told people at Rivals, Scout, that he was definitely going to be at Michigan, in just a matter of weeks no less. this is the type of story that makes me care less and less about recruiting since it's just one big circus. i mean, you never, ever know what may happen. but this instance in particular just pissed me off. and i don't buy the whole he's only 17, 18 argument cause at that age you're old enough to make conscious decision and keep your word. to conclude, it sucks that we lost a great prospect but if anything, this story speaks volumes about why following recruiting (as a fan) is a waste of time. i know i've learned that. rivals, scout, those are all fun but ultimately just a waste. anything can happen and we have absolutely zero input. and i'm much more interested in the results on the field than this.

what irritates me is perception of rich rod...they say he isn't a good life teacher or whatever, he doesn't help people grow off the football field. But as soon as the man starts winning, I guarantee you there will be sports writers all over his nuts, talking about the adversity that he went through - never mind that THEY THEMSELVES were the cause of it. It's very similar to the JoePa perception in the media before and after this season : http://www.blackshoediaries.com/2008/12/17/695667/if-you-say-it-on-the-…

The truth is that NONE of us screwballs sitting in front of a computer screen knows what kind of "life teacher" or mentor Rich Rod is. Only former and current players of his can answer that question honestly. For whatever reason, Shavodrick had the PERCEPTION that the Tulsa coaches were better suited to help him with that aspect of his life than RR and his coaching staff. That doesn't necessarily make it true, however.

What bothered me most about Beav's decommit was the complete breakdown of our pipeline of Texas recruits. Mallet, McGuffie, Fera, and now the Beav - M's recruiting pipe in Texas is really damaged now. Texas is the #1 or #2 state for HS football, and everybody we get from down there lately cept Stonum has transferred or decommitted which gives us a bad rap in that recruiting pool.
