CJ Olaniyan - In-State Recruiting
Somebody please enlighten me - What is going on with this kid?? I am not going to latch onto the whole "MSU is killing Michigan in In State Recruiting" thing, but the recruitment of this kid is alarming to me. I haven't heard much about his interest in Michigan and it seems that he's likely headed to East Lansing or to State College. I know that his offer list is extremely impressive, so I would much rather see him at USC, FLA, LSU or any other out of conference school. But to lose him to MSU or PSU would be incredibly hurtful and degrading, not just on the football field but also in the whole "in state supremacy" thing.
I know Gholston was an MSU shoe in from the beginning, but we need to get this kid. He plays a position of need and he would be great fit in Robinson's offense.
So, to make a long story short, what's the deal? Is he gonna be playing at the BigHouse or what??? (TomVH)
Someone please enlighten me. I know that we are killing it down in FLA, OH etc., but we cannot let Dantonia take all the in state kids. I think the whole 3-9 season and RichRod pre-season fiasco really hurt his reputation in state.
Don't worry about MSU dominating in state recruiting. We got Gardner and Ricardo. We are in good position for White and Mathis. I would like to get CJ, but don't worry, it's only June/ almost July.
Is very important, especially if they're going to one of our rivals instead of playing at Michigan. I could care less if they were wooed by the beaches of Miami, song girls of USC etc....
CJ's gonna be important. I don't mind if we lose Mathis to Miami or even Austin White, but CJ is the most important. RB is not a position of need
Don't worry too much about him. My sister teaches there. The kid is extremely talented, but has a bad personality. "I don't have to do anything in school. Football is my ticket."
As long as he produces on the football field....I personally know a few of our former and current players who have similar attitudes....but would probably be named as the favorite players as most of the ppl on this board.
It's a fine attitude to have until he gets suspended and/or transfers for academic reasons. Then we still don't have him, and instead of having a player who could develop over 4 years we have a short time player. I'll take the former.
Want to name a few of your 'personal friends'?! I was a TA (or GIS, whichever you call it) for a heck of a lot of players on a lot of teams on campus and for the most part they took classes and their education more seriously then the average undergrad.
Don't make up facts to support your believes, just to win a debate on the internet.
I'm not saying that every player, or even most, have bad attitudes and don't care about school. I am saying that I know a few specific players, from when I went to UofM (Class of '06) and through personal friends and family, that wouldn't garner any love from anyone here if they weren't good at football. A close family member of mine lives with three football players and agrees that some of the guys (to remain anonymous) are extreme boneheads.

Olynanian would hardly be the only athlete to have that attitude (if what you say is even remotely true). In fact, I would venture to say that most collegiate football programs (ours included) have more than handful of players with that kind of thought process.
Where did you see him reported as having USC, LSU, and UF offers because they aren't listed on his scout or rivals profiles though he has an impressive offer list nonetheless (OU, ND, Miami).
If he has offers from them, but he seems to be a stud...His offer list is impressive nonetheless and I would hate to see him in East Lansing or State College. How they can recruit is beyond me.
So you bash Michigan's recruiting efforts while you make unfounded and baseless claims? I'd take you more seriously if you provided more facts instead of incoherent rambling and bitching. Olaniyan has some good offers but he's far from being an elite prospect.
How do you know he'd be a great fit for our D? What evidence do you have that he'd be a great fit? Spend some time to do research and actually provide insightful analysis instead of coming here and crying and bitching.
I don't have any facts, but it could be; academics, conditioning, attitude, some type of "ghost" in the closet?
Who knows. Hopefully, RR and staff are recruiting the right type of kids.
Or, maybe Olaniyan just doesn't want to play for Michigan? Why do some fans always assume that there is something wrong with a recruit when they don't show interest in us?

Because assholes like to pretend that he's a horrible kid - then they forward on second-hand rumors on a message board about their sister, his teacher, I assume, saying he's an asshole. It reflects wonderfully on everyone involved.

I understand it is important to recruit Michigan but ... i really don't care if a random 3 star talent from michigan goes elsewhere even state because 3 stars dont excite me and are generally fillers, rarely studs ... per scout we only have 6 4star players in michigan this yr and no 5 stars ... so really I only care about 6 instate players (i think we can do better than mathis at corner) ... of those 6 we currently have 1 (gardner) and state has 2 (gholston and boistour), furthermore i think we do end up with austin white so in my mind were 2-2 with state competing with them on CJ to "take" the state
and Boisture is not a guy that fit well at M, given that he is a pro-style guy (read: M had many others ranked ahead of him)
So that makes Gholston the only guy State currently has, that M really wanted. As the recruiting season continues, this # may go to 2 or 3 guys in total that State beat M for. I'm not positive, but that seems pretty normal to me.
The sad thing for MD and State is that this is after M's worst season ever, and a really good year for State.
dont forget that gholston was pretty solidly MSU before this whole thing started. saying we were going head to head with him ignores the inherent lead MSU already had at the beginning.
that so many of you are falling right into Dantonio's trap. You (the generic "you," not anyone in particular) are allowing him to frame the discussion on instate recruiting. Our class is not measured by the strength of instate recruiting. Pride and "beating" Dantonio instate really doesn't mean shit, but Dantonio has made a bunch of controversial statements to stir things up and it is apparently working. Rod is forced to reassure the newspapers and other media that instate is important, putting him on the defensive. Recruiting junkies like us cringe as middling Michigan prospects head to MSU. We wouldn't have cared about any of this had Dantonio not made these comments. It was actually a brilliant "political" move on his part.
The bottom line is this - RR only needs to maintain existing relationships instate and pick up the top talent. He is doing this. Unlike MSU, we can go all over the country for talent. We are not limited. Also, the players have to fit our system. RR need not take suboptimal players for our system to appease those that freak out over some phantom "instate dominance."
Stop lending Dantonio's words any credibility and have faith in RR's recruiting prowess.
I agree totally. Too much emphasis on what state a player is from, instead of what type a player he is. 2009 we could not have got qb's like Tate and Denard in state, sooo RR went out of state and signed 4, lost 2, and has the fan base geeked for sept. 5.
Dantonio is doing a good job up in EL framing a false arguement, which creates attention and allows State to be compared favorably to Michigan. In the long run, it does not mean that much to Michigan, but it may help MSU's football program

Again, its all hype generated by newspapers and Dantonio. If we wanted to sit here and recruit Michigan all day, we would. Rodriguez has his coaches all working it, you can believe that.
The thing is, when you can get players from Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas (4 of the most fertile recruiting grounds), you do it. It doesn't mean the state of Michigan sucks or whatever, Michigan has just always done it like this.
to call Ricardo an instate recruit. A downside to completely changing the team's style is that some players we would have taken in past years will now be of no interest to us, and gobbled up by MSU. This will happen and it is just a product of our interest level because of our new style. This will make MSU better. That's ok. It will make us better too. Let's get used to it now.
I agree. I also think that some teams change their style based on the types of players they get ie. State. I know that most schools do this and "adapt" to the players and their talents, however I am more than satisfied with Michigan going for the guys that fit the system and not going for every talented player out there, regardless of where their talents lie. As was witnessed last year, wrong players = failure.
This theory does not hold true for defensive recruits.
If you say it enough, some will eventually get it. Be patient.
Look at the number of guys both M and MSU want and see who gets more. Then remove the guys who are M or MSU locks/leans for one reason or another and look at that metric. Look at each case and analyze whether it is disturbing or not, and to what degree - all cases are not the same.
I hope MSU has more recruits from the state of Michigan than U of M does in every one of its classes. M should be able to pull more guys from out-of-state than MSU is, and recruiting classes have finite numbers.

Aramide Olaniyan does not yet have an offer from ND and is currently committed to Duke. Hopefully both of those things change this week. :)
I didn't realize there are 2 national recruits with the last name of Olaniyan (CJ and Aramide). Aramide is the cat camping at ND.

That's a stretch. Sure, we offered him. He chose State because they told him he could also play basketball and because RR essentially told him "we think you're a good athlete so we offered you, but don't expect to see the field much because I don't do shit with TE's and there is a guy one year above you who is already starting." We ended up taking zero TE's that class. Clearly his position was not a priority.
Considering the circumstances, I don't blame him for going to state. But I wouldn't exactly say Michigan "wanted" him all that badly, or that we "lost" that recruiting battle.

From 2002-2007 (all the records on Rivals), Michigan took significantly more recruits from MI than MSU.
Dantonio has changed the recruiting focus at MSU and it's not just politics. Claiming "that's the way it's always been" is obscuring the facts.
You are not allowed to question anything regarding Rich Rodriguez. And as for MSU--the ONLY guys they get--are the ones Michigan DOESN'T WANT. Now, it's retroactive, of course, because if those kids would have committed to Michigan, this board and all Michigan boards would be full of boners.
You can rest assured Rodriguez has a Golden Eye--he spots talent where no one else dares look. Just wait til Drew Dileo and Tony Drake are tearing up football stadiums all across the Big Ten. Give it three to four years. What Rodriguez did at West Virginia in a shit conference will SURELY be easily replicated here.
Do NOT dare to step out of line and wonder why Michigan all the sudden doesn't pay attention to Michigan high school kids, star ratings, 40 times (that's poopy straigh-line speed, not football speed, whether a guy has all his limbs, has ever played the game, or may or may not even be ALiVE! My advice to you sir is to not worry so much about recruiting. Coaches know full well the importance of recruiting and spend countless hours evaluating kids. As for the current commitments, congratulations to them. They have earned the opportunity to play at college football's highest level. Enjoy the games this fall. They will be fun to watch.

I know that you have no concept of what it is to be a fan, you just like to try and tear us down. I still don't get why you haven't been shown the blunt side of the banhammer yet. i don't understand why so many of you are disappointed in rr for losing the battle of instate recruiting to msu. frankly, i don't care were our players come from. as long as we are recruiting the top players, who cares if they're in state or out of state. as long as we set up pipelines with those schools, a la pahokee fl, trotwood oh, cass tech mi, we will have better recruiting classes. that's what we should be striving for.
losing a head to head battle with msu over any player anywhere is a bound to sting a bit. it'd be a different story if we didn't offer some of these guys. but a player like olaniyan is clearly a player the staff would love to have in the fold. otherwise they wouldn't have extended him an offer.
i want cj really bad as well but it won't be the end of the world...
