Brian & Seth in "THE BLOCKHAMS CAPTION CHALLENGE"

Submitted by Six Zero on

After never missing a regularly-scheduled strip in ten full months of The Blockhams, I finally admitted defeat in the face of natural disaster on Tuesday.  But today we're back, with the first ever...

After working up some artwork a few weeks ago I found myself searching for the perfect punchline and couldn't quite nail it down.  I even bounced it off of the never-ending idea machine known around here as Misopogon.  And somewhere around there, I had an idea of my own... wouldn't it be fun if I could invite some of the Michigan Media's more famous faces and/or names to write a caption for the art?  Surely I thought it would be cool to see how these journalistic types might tackle on something a bit more creative, and by all means it would be interesting to see how each one stacked against each other when the dust had settled.

So, by my own admission, the whole thing was thrown together rather haphazardly on Twitter.  And the whole misery of natural disaster thing this week didn't help. Plus there was Hurricane Sandy too.  (hur hur)

But in the end, it all worked out.  Over on The Blockhams site I have all of the results displayed, and even have a poll set up to determine the winner.  The only problem now is that I wanted to include links and shout-outs to the sites of each of the respected contestants. As you are now reading this on one of those sites, it's hard not to look at it as a conflict of interest that I would include a poll on Brian's own site.  I also didn't want to link out to all other sorts of Michigan sites here-- I feel guilty enough driving traffic away enough just by linking to The Blockhams itself.

So as a healthy compromise I've chosen to display the entries of both the staffers here at MGoBlog that agreed to take part.  If you would like to see the rest and/or vote for either the Photobomb Ninja himself or the Artist Formerly Known as Misopogon, then by all means you are welcome to.  But at any rate I thought it would be worth showing MGoBlog what two of the official staff are capable of in a unique creative challenge.

So without further ado, I present to you this week's edition of The Blockhams, drawn by myself and written by both Brian and Seth.

What a game.  Just wanted to pay tribute in some small way to the Bear.  Kid had a rough start but has been an absolute clutch performer for us. Hats off to our celebrated bearded and flow-possessing pla

On Thursday we look ahead to a big showdown... in Nebraska of all places.

In light of all of the mayhem over the weekend, plus a really frantic week of serving as a de facto tour guide for visiting in-laws, I opted to push back the Caption Challenge to next week.  I obviously also wanted to do a piece on the MSU game, so it turned out to be win-win.  I'll present the Caption Challenge next Tuesday in all its confused glo

Those taking part in the first ever Caption Challenge include:  ESPN's Tom Van Haaren aka TomVH (duh!), JustCoverBlog's JamieMac, MLive's Kyle Meinke, The Wolverine's Tim Sullivan, Tremendous's Steve Lorenz (the artist formerly known as Aquaman), MVictor's Greg Dooley, Maize n Brew's Anthony Mammel, The Hoover St. Rag's Craig D. I'll work them all up, and we may even have a poll.  The winner will receive a free

all-inclusive trip with Charlie Blockham to Ms. Katzenmoyer's office. Look for it next week!
