Desmond Blockham has returned to Ann Arbor for spring classes, and unbeknownst to him, there is a surprise waiting for him at the dorms...

Back in the mid-90's when I was an udergrad, I heard stories about people who studied in the Law Library at 1pm on fall Saturdays.... so, if such stories were true, then yes, this type of mystical person existed.
However, I imagine they have become extinct, or run out of AA by locals and frat guys, over the last 15 years.

as an honors college member (basically only for the south quad housing) I can tell you there were a few people like this in my hall. they were great to have because you could have them get tickets and then buy the season off the for an extra set. we turned a few to the good side but I know of at least two who never went to/watched a game all 4 years. one kid said football saturdays were his favorite because the libraries were empty and quiet for his studying. (this was 2003-2007)

I was totally disinterested in football, unlike my Dad and Grandfather, who had both been fanatics as students. Not sure almost anyone in East Quad, where I lived, WAS into football. Loved hoop, but. It was really in 95, when I lived in San Francisco, that I found a bar where lots of M fans were hanging out, and because absorbed.

Glenn needs to buck up for an apartment for the kid. Its one thing to educate someone about the greatness that is Michigan football versus some other lesser team. Its a completely different world to have to educate them about the sport itself. There is very little time during the season - what with keeping up with the posts on MGoBlog, attending the games, and studying every now and again. Desmond doesn't have the time or the patience.

Gotta say, it doesn't even appear that an attempt at a punchline was made in the whole thing. It seems like the whole point of this was to be culturally insensitive/offensive.
Who cares if people don't follow football? At least he's not one of the guys buying tickets only to not show up and make the student section look awful.

If you are personally offended by this strip, I apologize.
Certainly insults, to anyone particular or widespread, were not my motivation or intent, and I referred to several individuals just to make sure they did not find it disrespectful. Each gave me their blessing.
I should point out, Yeshpremi is not a punchline... he will be an ongoing supporting character. And trust me, the joke will not always be on him.

One of my best frends from my time at UM was an international student named Saahil. Saahil was from India and was very big into soccer and cricket. He had seen American football before but really wasn't into it.. He knew virtually nothing about the concept, goal, and rules of the game. After hanging around with all of us for 4 years he is without a doubt one of the biggest Michigan fans I know and probably the biggest UM fan in India. He even flew in just for the OSU game this past year FROM INDIA! I hope Yeshpremi follows a similar path. Thanks for reminding me of my good friend Six Zero!

The sport du jour in India: cricket. It is absolutely huge there. India-Pakistan cricket matches cause both nations to stop to a halt.

There were definitely a bunch of Yeshpremi's when I was in school (non football caring students). Heck i even got to live with one. What i dont get is why Desmond is worked up about it. I'd have the dude get season tickets and then buy them from him and turn a nice little profit.
A much bigger worry will be if his new roomie wants to whip up some taste sensations from his native land that dont work so well in a microwave. That happened to me and Good Lord our dorm stunk for a week.

I first met my new roommate when I came back from a buddy's place after watching the Sugar Bowl. My first obvious question was "What did you think of that game?". He responded that he didn't follow sports...

I'll agree that this was true when I joined U of M
But two years and I watch every U of M game (football or Basketball) and have new jerseys delivered to whatever part of the world I am in. I've been to games in bars in London, Hong Kong and San Francisco in the past 2 years.
We in India don't have exposure to college sports in the US and it is a perfectly accurate representation of reality for most new students.
Wait till you hear 'Yeshpremi' talk about football statistics to Trojan fans (also a school with huge Indian population) in later years ;)
