Big Ten Recruiting Rankings: 9-30-12

  • Recruiting Rankings

Not a whole lot going in the recruiting world over the past couple weeks, but there is a new addition to the big board: the "POINTS" column, which is simply the product of number of commits times star average. Hopefully this adds a little more clarity to the rankings; as you can see below, Michigan and Notre Dame are well ahead of the field and Ohio State has some separation from the pack at large. Then there's Minnesota. Never change, Gophers. Changes since the last rankings:

9-11-12: Indiana picks up Jordan Heiderman.
9-19-12: Penn State picks up Kasey Gaines.
9-20-12: Ohio State picks up Tyquan Lewis.
9-22-12: Indiana picks up Anthony Young.
9-23-12: Notre Dame picks up Torii Hunter Jr.
9-25-12: Penn State picks up Tanner Hartman.

Chart? Chart:

Big Ten+ Recruiting Class Rankings

3 Ohio State 17 3.65 3.65 3.65 3.76 3.68 62.50

13 Minnesota 6 2.50 2.33 2.67 2.83 2.58 15.50

^The average of the average rankings of the four recruiting services (the previous four columns). The figure is calculated based on the raw numbers and then rounded, so the numbers above may not average out exactly.

NOTE: Unranked recruits are counted as two-star players.

To eliminate any confusion about how the rankings are determined (to be honest, they used to be arbitrary), team order is determined by multiplying the number of commits by star average.

On to the full data after the jump.

They might be playing less games with us, but ND isn't going to stop recruiting the midwest and going after the same type of guys from California, Florida, Texas, whatever, that we are. I don't have the numbers for this, but I would venture a guess that we go head to head with ND for more recruits than about half the Big Ten. When is the last time we were in a heated battle for recruits with Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue, IU or Northwestern? I can say it definitely happens with ND all the time.

How many guys would you say have some of the other Big Ten schools (maybe replace Wisconsin with Illinois?) in their top five or ten with M, compared to how many have ND and M? Some kind of guess would be just fine, I'm not looking for a scientific study or anything.

I'd assume we get into top five (or ten or eight, whatever) lists with Ohio State and Michigan State most often, and then ND after that. Like I said, though, I don't have any numbers to back that up.

I didn't intend to express concern over our future d-line.  I agree that Hoke and company will create a monster d-line themselves.  In fact, although we also have top-notch kids coming in, I beleive this staff could do as much with recruits that may not recieve many of the somewhat-overrated service endorsements (see 2005-06 Gator d-line of which Mattison was a part).  That, however, says nothing with respect to what appears to be a nasty, growing collection of d-linemen in Ohio.  Again, our incoming o-line is equally laudable, and will be equal to the task; but, to state the obvious a stable of fresh d-linemen with little to no drop-off in talent can really be a bitch to deal with.

It's not the same situation.  Notre Dame is already an independent.  They can play whoever they want, and they frequently play USC, for example.  Michigan has to play eight games within the Big Ten (aka the midwest), so adding a ninth regional school is "overkill" in some Michigan fans' opinions.

Meanwhile, even with Michigan holding down Notre Dame from playing national opponents, they're still playing USC, Oklahoma, BYU, Miami, Stanford, Boston College, and Wake Forest.

I agreed with having them on our list when they were an annual opponent, but I don't see a reason to have them on here any longer, since most of the recruits they're now getting will not play much of a role until after we stop playing them.

They were originally included on this list because they were a regular opponent, like an additional Big Ten team, not because we recruit against them, like many on here are mentioning.  I don't see a reason for them to be included going forward.  Maybe through the end of 2013 recruiting, but not beyond that.
