Rivals rankings are on the "RR" scale, which is on a scale from about 5 to about 6.1. Unrated prospects are given a 5.1 rating, on par with the worst of any Big Ten commit last year. Scout is on the 5-star system (unranked players earn 1 star), and ESPN uses grades out of 100 (unranked is 40 or 45, except JuCo players, who aren't included in the average).

Jordan Frysinger, an unranked wideout (who chose football at Illinois over lacrosse at Johns Hopkins, which is an... interesting choice) picks the Illini. Henry Dickinson picks up a 5.5 rating from Rivals. I'm giving the Illini the benefit of the doubt over Indiana because they have more commits, and a couple guys whose ratings are due to improve.

I think the greater number of recruits adds to the over all value of the class.  kinda like the model used by Rivals.   either that or the creator of this blog hates everything Michigan.

MSU and Michigan's classes are about the same. I put the Spartans ahead for now because they have more commits, and because when in doubt, I'm going to preserve the order of things the way they were in the previous update.

I really wish Rivals would take all of their rankings, subtract 5, then multiply by ten.

Who is Rivals saving the 0.0 to 4.9 rankings for?  Members of high school debate teams?

I wonder where this GB Packer fullback (undrafted free agent of the Steelers/Shippensburg RB) was ranked by these services. Granted he's one player but spotting bona fide talent is the issue and our coaching staff should be better at doing that than Rivals or ESPN.

It could be that with classes generally being equal their top recruit is graded just a little bit higher than Dee Hart is.  We get Ha-Ha to sign and I am sure that would put us ahead.

The way Scout does their team rankings is (Star Avg * # of Recruits)

Here is how it looks according to Scouts:

Rank School # Commits Scout Avg Rank

1 Ohio State 19 3.79 72.01

2 Notre Dame 19 3.47 65.93

3 Nebraska 18 3.39 61.02

4 Illinois 23 2.48 57.04

5 Iowa 19 2.84 53.96

6 Wisconsin 19 2.84 53.96

7 Michigan State 16 3.25 52.00

8 Indiana 18 2.67 48.06

9 Michigan 14 3.43 48.02

10 Minnesota 15 2.47 37.05

11 Northwestern 13 2.77 36.01

12 Purdue 12 2.00 24.00

13 Penn State 8 2.75 22.00

That's not how Scout does their rankings (as that would be simply "total stars" and not have any decimals). That's also heavily, heavily quantity-over-quality biased and to be taken with an epic grain of salt. Illinois's class is pretty bad. Simply because it is enormous doesn't suddenly make it the 4th-best in the conference.

Other schools lost recruits this week - IU, MSU, Nebraska, Wisky. Setting IU aside for a minute, those are three major programs - maybe we shouldn't freak out, then, when such things happen to us, and realize it's just the magnitude of the last few years that blows everything out of proportion.

That having been said, I'm content to mow Dee Hart's mom's grass for a year if he sticks to his verbal.
