no, YOU'RE off topic
Terrible time of year for sports so I felt like making some predictions about the big ten programs for the next five years.
Ohio State- Pryor never develops as a true passer; overall talent will make them average 9-10 wins a year. They will also lose two more bcs games. Come 2013 they will have become stale, just as we did towards the end of Lloyds career.
Penn State- they will remain Penn State, a big ten title 2 disappointing season, 2 good seasons.
Michigan state- I think they finally got someone who wants to stay in EL and can make them legit in dantonio. He’s really surprised me with recruiting, but until they can land players from across the country they are between 7-6 and 9-4 every year.
Illinois- Ron Zook will keep them loaded with talent and disappointment on the field. Great recruiter, not a great coach.
Wisconsin- Bielema is gone after this season when they go 5-7. If he’s able to make it to next season they’ll go 3-9. Hopefully they get it right with the next coach and can rebound.
Iowa- Ferentz is the best coach in the country. Nobody develops talent like he can, if he was at a major program it would be scary. They’ll make it to a bcs game in the next 5 years.
Northwestern – they should be pretty good under Fitzgerald. Averaging 8 wins a year.
Minnesota- why did they ever fire glen mason, he had them ranked regularly. Won’t be the case under Brewster, I don’t like him changing his offense after they had success with it last year. 2 bowls over the next 5 years
Purdue- they’ll really miss Joe tiller, could be a long time till they play in another bowl game.
Indiana- kicked their best player since randel el off the team. Should be a mid-tear MAC school for the foreseeable future.
Notre Dame- I don’t care what anyone thinks about how good they should be this year. Shamu will be gone after this season and Urban Meyer will take his “dream job”. Having the two pioneers of the spread offense coaching will make this a game that will affect the national title race every year.
Michigan- had to save the best for last; we shock the world and finish 11-2 this year. A national title, two rose bowls and two Jan. 1st bowl games over the next 5 years.
That's what I thought. Particularly with the Ferentz comment and the 11-2 prediction for Michigan.
just a bold prediction for the future
Not sure which of these you are serious about, but the ND thing makes too much sense - I was thinking about it, it seems almost perfect timing after this year....
Tebow is gone next year, Meyer can leave after that without much hubbub. His family is older, which was his stated reason last time for not considering ND. He has a clause or whatever in his contract about M, OSU, and ND (I don't exactly remember the details, but I think it was that those 3 schools could land him without having to buyout his Florida contract)
Charlie has to win 10 games this year with the easiest schedule (evah!) in front of him, and probably won't since he is Charlie...so he is out. He has stockpiled talent and not utilized it - similar to Zook at Florida before Meyer showed up - so the cupboard is enticing with a senior Clausen and Dayne Crist behind him.
Were this to happen in hypothetical fairy land it would be exciting to see, a strong ND is good for Michigan, and vice versa; and maybe resultingly the ESSSS EEEEE CEEEEE bs would tone down a little bit.
i really think that urban will take the job when they fire free willy. After this year he could have 3 nc's in 5 years, what else would there be for him to prove. I can't see him passing on the ND job twice. He would still be able to land a top class every year and bring in the speed he had at florida to ND. Maybe he would actually dare to make a legit schedule there too.
State can and will go better than 9-4 at least 2-3 times in the next 5 years. I'd say we get 3 Jan 1 games. ND won't be in the B10 either.
ND will never join because then they couldn't water down their schedule when with half non bcs teams. Just figured to add them since we play them every year.
the reason ND stays Independent has way more to do with money than scheduling. Plus, being as the Big Ten is terrible, joining it might be viewed as "watering down" their schedule.
ND has one of the easiest schedules out there.
Hm.. let's see. ND plays, Michigan , Michigan State, Purdue, Washington, USC, Wazzu, BC, Pitt, Connecticut (not bad), and Stanford. Ten of twelve are BCS teams. I'd even argue that their schedule is on par with our schedule, or maybe even better.
It's all about the $.
yeah sharing their revenue from their television program and giving up their exclusive NBC TV deal just makes some old boosters balls just shrivel up.
I have a hard time understanding why Illinois will be mediocre. Aside from his first year (which we all know is sometimes very, very hard) he went to a Rose Bowl with his predecessor's recuits and contributions from his younger players. Last year was an abberation I think, it was an unfortunate year for them. they could easily have been in a bowl game. I think Florida gave Zook a bad rap, and he could have a very successfuul career at Illinois.
Brewster is also confusing to me. Hes brought energy to the program and is recruiting well. The new stadium cannot hurt him. I like the change in offensive philosphy - going back to Gopher-style offense is a good idea after last year's fade.
Fitzgerald may break through but last year was very aboverage and I don't see continued success near eight wins a year, 6 or 7 IMHE.
Ferentz is not the best coach in the country. He is not. That contention is idiotic compared to Pete Carroll, Bob Stoops, Mack Brown, Urban Meyer, Les Miles, even Jim Grobe has done better (altough that is debatable considering I have no statistical evidence), Bobby Bowden, JoePa, Sweatervest, etc. are better than Ferentz although he is a phenominal coach and will see a BCS bowl soon (I'd say this year if the schedule was nicer to them.)
I think you're bitter to Ohio State though, Pryor will be great unfortunately, Vince Young comparisons are fair. Unlike the Lloyd years, the Vest has done a good job recruiting and they could be very good down the line. Rodriguez v. Tressel will be as good of a match as Rodriguez v. Meyer (no disagreement there altough he could pull a Miles and just say "you know what I've got a good thing here so sorry and good luck.")
Another way of looking at it is that Zook has had only one good season in his career (2007).
The prediction for M is more than bold. If we go 11-2 this year I'll slap you for being right.
the best coach in the country? Really? I can't fathom why you believe hes the premier coach in NCAA football.
What???? When did I say Ferentz was the best coach in the country?
victorsandbest did in his original post.
I know its a stretch to say he is the best, but this is my rational. No one in the country does more with less.He never has great recruting classes, but he beats powerhouse recuting schools on a regular basis. I think that can be credited to him bieng one of the best at developing talent. If he were to coach at a powerhouse with the school prestige to bring in top classes i think his teams would dominate. Not a great record at iowa,70-53(.757) but i thinks its impresive with the players hes had.
Yea, he does a good job bringing in pieces that he can win with, but to say hes one of the top 5 coaches in college football is a real stretch. He hasn't won any major bowl games or won the conference a few years in a row.
and wrong. Based on the numbers provided (70-53), Ferentz has a .569 winning percentage.
I think a handful of Michigan fans were delusional enough to predict 11 wins last year.
Not that I'm not crossing my fingers.
Meyer move from a school that possibly can win 3 NCs in a row to ND. Granted, he has stated that ND/Mich are his dream jobs and they might be able to cough up alot more money than FL, but I just don't see it happening. IMO.
Did he really say that about Michigan? I've never heard anything other than about Notre Dame.
And when you have a dream job, if it really is a dream job, you go for it, especially if you look forward to the challenge and truly believe you can succeed in place where you really want to be.
that specifies Michigan and Notre Dame as the 2 places he could get out of his contract with Florida. I'll try to find some solid proof.
When it came time to talk about Notre Dame's sudden head-coaching vacancy Tuesday, all was quiet on the western front.
The perceived front-runner, Utah's Urban Meyer, wasn't tipping his hand while speaking to reporters after the Utes' practice.
"I have great respect for that university; that's the reason it's in my contract," said Meyer, who has a clause that allows him to leave for Notre Dame, Ohio State or Michigan without a buyout penalty. I think a lot of people look into it more than what it is. I'm sure that this is going to spark a lot of discussion, but I'm just trying to get a team ready to play in a bowl game."
There was a time, though, when Meyer -- who has led the Utes to an 11-0 ...
Wow I fail horribly. I guess this is his Utah contract that states those 3 schools. I can't find anything on if Florida has something similar in his contract. It does show that hes very interested in those 3 schools though.
Nah not a fail, it does demonstrate some interest in ND, OSU, and Michigan. I guess it goes back to your point though. If he has such success at Florida why would he leave? Since rumors (and mind you they are only rumors) still implicate ND as a potential move, perhaps it is the only school he would jump ship for. And may not now, but sometime after our lord and saviour tim tebow is long gone.
Lovin' the Midwest! Lovin' the Snow!
...Except not so much with Florida.
Weis will win enough games against the likes of navy, stanford, pittsburgh, airforce and whoever else to not get fired unless they start losing consistently to us (they already lose consistently to their only other MAJOR rival, USC).
Ferentz is not a super great coach.
That is all I have to say about that.
Most of the ND fans I know say it's 10 wins or bust. After Michigan pounds them into the ground on Sept. 12th, they can only lose to USC. Clausen will continue to throw into double coverage, and they will definitely lose at least 4 games this year. Their best QB will sit the bench all year (Dane) and they will continue to not call enough running plays to be effective. Buh Bye Charlie!! I really don't want to play Urban Meyer every year, but I do agree that it would make the rivalry even more intense. I would rather beat up on the front butt while they get over-rated like crazy. #7 pre-season? After .500 last year? With the same guys? I don't get it.
and there is only the Tigers' to keep our summers exciting, but isn't 5 years a long way to project out in the future?
I just want a solid season this year. I want to not scream at the TV due to losing, yet another, fumble. I want to cheer in jubilation when we score a touchdown or make a critical 3rd down stop on defense. Hail to the Victors!
I agree with PSU, Idiana, Minn, Illi, and Purdue but…
I think Iowa will win the B10 and make it to a BCS bowl this year. Then I think they’ll go back to being the 4th best team in the conference.
I think Dantonio will leave MSU for a better school soon, but if he doesn’t I think MSU will be a consitent contender every year because in a way they remind me of tUOS as fare as playing style is considered.
Northwestern will soon fall from grace into below avg. They’re enitled to have 1-2 good seasons a decade and they just had one so they will probably fall next year.
Winsi is probably the 5 or 6 best team in the conference depending on wheather or not we beat them this year, but regardless he won’t be fired this year…next year though.
ND will not join the conference nor will Charlie be fired. I think he’ll keep that team loaded enough that they’ll win at least 8 games or more a year (regardless of whether or not Charlie can coach) especially with their schedule. I think they lose 3-4 this year but next year watch out.
As for Pryor, I hate to say it; he will be legite. Sure he sucked last year but even then they only lost 2 games with him at the helm. Besides he was just a true Freshman. I think at best they’ll share the B10 with Iowa and depending on how we look next year, they’ll win it again next year. No NC though.
As for us, “Those who stay will be Champions.” I think by Rodriguez 4th-5th year we will be talking championship, but this year we will win 6-7 games and next year we will be at the 8-10 mark. I do think after this season we will always be in contention for the B10 and aside from the one NC we will resemble USC; always one of the best but can’t quite get it done. I’ll take it though.
....is UM's second-worst nightmare, only to Meyer at that school in Columbus.
Every ND coach since Lou Holtz has used ND's academic standards as an excuse for shoddy performance. Urban Meyer would prove that they were all full of shit.
I could see ND winning as many NC's as Florida did in the same amount of time. It would definitely be harder for UM to recruit the midwest, and the UM/ND game would pretty much be a title elimination game every year.
Meyer needs to stay in Gainesville, accept his "God" status, and be closer to his eventual retirement destination.
ND won't join they've said no before and they're not going to join
Have UM and OSU in different divisions, so a UM-OSU conference title game could be played in the lovely confines of Ford Field.
