Best Player to Wear # 97
At this number it seems the far and away favourite would have to be Chris Hutchinson. He started for 38 games as a DT and his best season was 1992, his senior year, where he set the single season record for sack yardage [99] and tied for number of sacks in a season [11]. He is second on the career sack list with 24 for 188 yards. He was co-captain and team MVP for the year. In addition to earning Big Ten Lineman of the Year and All-American honours for athletics, he was an exemplary student, a three time Academic All Big-Ten award winner, earning both the Dr. Arthur D. Robinson Scholarship Award (given to the team's leading senior scholar), and an NCAA post-graduate scholarship which used to attend UM Medical School. Here is a man who embodies all the best of what we think when the word "student athlete" comes to mind. Does anyone else have any other suggestions?

Interesting stuff and thank you, but might not this be more appropriate in the mgoboard section? The problem with diary entries for these and the upcoming 96 entries is that it moves in depth material (such as the Odoms statistical review, the probability win analysis, etc.) off the front page quite quickly while there are still lively debates going on.
Just a thought. Anyone else?
I agree. Or just do a diary for all 90s, then 80s, etc. Plus this guy is getting a bajillion mgopoints for this stuff.
for Bajillion.
I will take the suggestion in mind...and that it was not my intent to bump stuff off the list. Perhaps I will slow it down and do some more research...but if no one is interested...I do have other things I can do with my time
I am finding this facinating...but that may just be me...
I find it interesting, fascinating is probably too strong for me.
I also agree MGOBOARD would be a better location.
Can't wait until you get to Gordie Bell's number, I can't remember what is was, so I will be in suspense.
EDIT: I think you will get a much better response on MGOBOARD
Maybe so. Even doing my homework, it was tough to get to 200 words and I really did not think about bolocking out everything else. Enthusiasm getting the better of me.
Here is a thought...I do the voting and polling on the board and every ten numbers put the list with bios up in a diary post...that way there is something to actually read.
Thank you all for the helpful suggestions...
That sounds like a good idea.
As everyone else is saying, this is interesting stuff to take a look at, but it's already getting to be a bit much in the Diaries section and we've still got over 90 numbers to go. I'd be much more interested in reading a series of 10 diaries than 100.
That being said, this is helping (very slightly) to keep the Michigan side of my brain occupied this summer, so thanks for that!
What's funny about all the Diaries is you can follow the progression, from "wife wants me to get no. 19" to "I will look up 19 on Bentley" to "Oh my God Bentley's database is fucking Sweeeeeeet!!!!!"
Same thing sparked my thing last year.
Always love the Wolverine enthusiasm, no problem.
....because of my post, but honestly, set up your own blog if you're going to do something like this. By the time you get to the numbers that will really warrant discussion (89 on down), I'm not going to bother reading.
I agree, I mean look at the Diaries section on the right hand side of the homepage. UMFootballCrazy nearly has a monopoly on the "New" section, and it's a pretty trivial topic to begin with.
That being said, you could do blocks of ten numbers and put them in the MGoBoard every so often.
Hutch! (for real this time)
and I don't see what the problem is with him doing this countdown. it's the off season, and as far as I can remember it's never been done here before. as always, if you think it's a waste of time or lame just read something else.
If you are going to continue these posts, please at least move them to the board and stop choking the diary section. Or create a blog for these 99 posts, as others have suggested.
Thanks for the support Chris, but as I listen to feedback and think about it, lets move the debate about each number to the board where I can post them as I get time ... which might mean a flurry one day and none the next ... and every ten numbers I will weigh all that is said and pick one and put together a list of ten with bios.
If you go single number countdowns, the board is the place to put it. However, I like the idea of doing a diary series for each number group (90's, 80's, ect.) Keep up the good work!
While this is interesting, you can't possibly do this for every number without destroying the Diaries section.
goes to a place in fandom that I will never experience. Not being critical at all, good luck with it, but I can't relate. Good luck with the work.
Before you get to the #3 I'll vote. Best #3 of all time, hands down: Stevie Brown
hands down is the best here.
"LAZARUS! He's hit, he's down. He's dead. But wait, he gets back up!" every time he made a tackle.
Does Braylon count as #80 or #1?
