Battered Wolverine Syndrome

Submitted by MCalibur on

I swore to myself that I wouldn’t be one of those guys who diaried about the state of the program but, God Damnit…a few recent diaries have sent me over. People waxing poetically about the good ole days when Michigan won because our helmets had wings, and our atmosphere was just fine because our boys knew we loved them. About how all this shit with App St, 2008, Boren and Wermers and Feagin is hurting the Michigan legacy, and, by golly… its just not fair!

Listen closely, Michigan is still, and forever will be, Michigan. Feilding Yost, Fritz Crisler, and Bo Schemblecher would go Woody Hayes on us if they saw us wilting like this.  Snap out of this Goddamned stupor

It needs to take more than a few punches to the face to shake our faith in and love for Michigan. We’ve had a football program for 130 years…think about that for a second.

Before the #1 jersey, winged helmets, and the Little Brown Jug; there was Michigan Football.

Before Climate Change, cathode-ray tubes, and unnatural flight, there was Michigan Football.

Before there were 38 stars on Old Glory, there was Michigan Football.

We’re to let one game (App. St.), one season (2008), a little uncertainty,  and a slow march through the gauntlet of rival jeering call that legacy of excellence into question? Yeah, all of those things have been tough to take and humble pie taste like shit but our fan base needed a little adversity. We had grown luke-warm. “You’re asking me to pay how much to watch a D1AA opponent?” Carr's losing his touch. Moeller was this, Bo never got it done….How ungrateful we’d become.

These experiences, as shitty as they’ve been, have amplified my love for Michigan rather than diminished it. Going to a game has always been awesome but, honestly, where it used to be a luxury for me, its now a necessity. I used to be blasé about losing MSU.  The clock guy is a dick. The ref sucked. That was pass interference … no more. Fuck those guys. Let them do what they do, but when they play us, we must win. I mean, look what happens to the economy when they beat us straight up for Christ’s sake…hell, the country needs us to win.

Every once in a while I catch myself shading a tad jealous of these old timers that had front row seats to the 10 year war, Anthony Carter, and others memories I’m too young to have first hand knowledge of. I realize now that we are the ones to be envied. We have the honor of bearing witness next great era in Michigan Football. Whether coach Rodriguez is the next Bennie Oosterbaan, Bump Elliot, or Bo Schembechler, Michigan will still be Michigan. And it will always be great to be a Michigan Wolverine.

Eff…now I’m waxing poetic….

Great post, indeed. I'm ready to run through a wall. And I agree wholeheartedly: this is still Michigan we are talking about: not Nebraska, FSU, or any other teams that have fallen upon hard times. One season does not constitute a "downward spiral," nor does one loss to MS-fucking-U constitute inferiority to little brother. And I'm still "in" for 9-3 with a victory over OSU.

should've gone first person plural in that section. Here's to long life for all you old timers. And here's to standing up... Is it too early to drink? EDIT: diary altered to bring the old timers in to the fold.

Awesome post, I wish that "we the fans" were like the players and coaches, afterall they are the ones that have to deal with it the hardest after losses and/or a shitty season. If they can hold their chins up and keep striving to get better, instead of the "bitching" that is often displayed, let's try supporting and encouraging them to succeed and bring U-M Football back to where it needs to be.....#1

Perhaps it is our general lack of active involvement --assuming that, e.g., shouting at Jim Hermann in the '05 OSU game doesn't count as "active involvement"-- that creates the tendency for entitlement and general spoiled-brat behavior amongst us fans

Great post. I too liked the argument about the economy being driven by Michigan victories over MSU. Nice to see that crazed fanhood has not died for this team.

Here here! I'm glad to hear from a segment of the fanbase that I can better identify with than those who are 'less than enthusiastic', to say the least. A large percentage of Michigan fans seem to have been spoiled by a long run of relatively successful seasons and are ready to jump of a cliff after 1 bad season (and likely another mediocre one this year, I'm realistic). To everyone puking and mewling about RR's character and acting like we have sold our soul or made some kind of deal with Satan that involves selling out the character of the program, relax. Nothing that has occurred is anything new to Michigan or NCAA football. Kids get in trouble. No one was calling for Lloyd's head when Harrison or Carson Butler proved to be lacking a bit of character. Coaching changes, especially ones that involve radical changes in philosophy, necessitate attrition from players. There is plenty of evidence that RR is maintaining and perhaps enhancing the integrity of the program you love. Look at the character of the remaining players and their constant verbalization of the family/team environment. Look at the higher grade point average. Look at the mobilization of support for Mealer and his family through their ordeal. Look at honoring the scholarship offer for a recruit who was injured for most of his senior year and a large ?? in terms of potential when other teams dropped him. Transition is a bumpy process, but let RR do his job and please stop placing every single tiny event/occurrence under a microscope and acting like it is a definitive indicator of character. Do not be so quick to judge and join in with media entities/personalities that are pandering to those that would not wish to see this team succeed. Be objective and look at the big picture. When you scrutinize and criticize each and every tiny little occurrence/decision/whatever, you are only feeding into that cycle. All of us have taken a lot of enjoyment, pride and entertainment from this team, the coaches and the players, over the years. It is time to give back. They need us and our support now. Stand up. Yell. Support the players and let them know you are behind them. To anyone that boo-ed the team last year, stay at home this year and please don't come back until we are winning again and you can jump on the bandwagon again because doing that to a group of kids on the field giving it their all is nothing short of reprehensible. You suck, go home. In short, to paraphrase a quote that I think is more appropro for our society as a whole in these times than when it was first spoken. 'Ask not what your Wolverines can do for you, but what you can do for your Wolverines'

"Ask not what your Wolverines can do for you, but what you can do for your Wolverines." Possibly the best thing I've heard this off-season. Plenty of people have said it's time for Rodriguez' team to put up or shut up. Maybe it's time for the fanbase to do the same. Also, I would love to see this statement on a t-shirt. Hint, hint.

I love the way you guys keep waxing poetic about ancient history. What once was Michigan football ... so fondly ... sniff ...sniff
