The Barwis Effect on the 7 Early Enrollees

Submitted by jg2112 on

Hello MGoBoarders -

I had a look at both the Spring and Fall rosters and focused in on the 7 early enrollees, to see what, if any, Barwis effect we can see on these kids.

Here are a few measurables of returning players on the fall roster, to use as comparison specimens:

Zoltan - 6'5", 231 lbs.
Omameh - 6 - 4, 276 lbs.
Warren - 6 - 0, 185 lbs.
Ezeh - 6 - 2, 243 lbs.

The early enrollees:

Tate Forcier - 6'1", 187 lbs then, 188 now.
Big Will - 6'5", 330 lbs then, 318 now.
Brandin Hawthorne - 6'0", 195 lbs then, 198 now.
Vladimir Emilien - 6'1", 213 lbs then, 198 now.
Mike Jones - 6'2", 202 lbs then, 203 now.
Vincent Smith - 5'6", 158 lbs then, 168 now.

And, the amazing body transformation winner:

Anthony LaLota - 6'4", 235 lbs then, 256 now.

Barwis has done wonders with BWC, Emilien, LaLota and Smith in 7 months. Perhaps LaLota will be able to contribute if needed? I hope he's not needed, but he's put on weight.

A few interesting notes -

Sheridan is 30 pounds heavier than Forcier.

Mike Martin is the same height as Brandon Graham, and 30 pounds heavier.

Brandon Herron is 6'2", 220 pounds, and Craig Roh is 6'4", 238 lbs. If Roh can put on 5-10 pounds of muscle, he will probably overtake Herron as the spinner at some point this year.

As an aside regarding Tate's "numbers," Colt McCoy entered school in 2005 at 6'1", 180 pounds. By 2006, when he started, he was listed at 6'3", 195 pounds. He is mostly listed on the Internets at 6'1". Tate is very close to Colt physically when Colt started for Texas as a RS frosh. I think the physical aspect of the game will be okay for Tate, it's the experience that needs to obviously be developed.

Also, as always, I needed to check on Mike Cox. 6'0", 208 pounds. Brandon is 6'1", 218 lbs. By next year, Cox should be able to take Minor's spot.

Kevin Grady is 60 pounds heavier than Kelvin Grady, at the same height.

Helmuth is down from 299 to 291.

All the O-linemen range in the 6'2" to 6'5" area, and in the 270-290 weight range. I think this is a little bit smaller weight-wise than, say, Wisconsin or Ohio State, but it seems exactly what Rich Rod's offense requires in O-linemen.

And finally, Quentin Washington is 4 inches shorter than Taylor Lewan, but 57 pounds heavier. The upcoming year of Barwis will certainly be interesting when comparing these guys next July.

That seems like a lot considering hes a safety. I wonder if this was desired or perhaps he was ill and lost the weight?

Yes, that would be sweet if you could keep tabs on these guys heights and weight so we can make comparisons a year from now, noting the Barwis Effect. Seeing which guys need to gain weight and which guys need to lose it.

I am sure that Barwis is doing a fine job, but how do we know the real football results of his workouts? We certainly can't see it from the data you listed, which is merely weight.

Tate Forcier was 175 coming in and is 190 now. I remember RR saying that. Tate used to weigh 187 but got sick and lost lots of weight. He gained it back and is at 190.

Love this:

"Also, as always, I needed to check on Mike Cox. "

Anyway, it seems like most of the early enrollees made some good strides physically, even if some were Barwised™ more easily than others.

Did you get these numbers from MGoBlue.com? If so, thats probably not the best place to get accurate height and weight measurements.

That being said, I'm not sure if this post tells me a lot or absolutely nothing at all. What I do know is that Barwis is definitely helping this team be as good as they can be. You cannot play any D-1 collegiate sport at a high level out of shape and he is helping get those 7 frosh get into the best shape of their lives. To the frosh that are already in very good shape, Barwis is just continuing them down the correct path. For guys like Big Will and Vlad, he is helping them recover from bad habits/injury and into good shape for the first time (or since injury for Vlad). I'm hoping these 7 early enrollees can step up and play well on the field because we are going to need them.

Would anyone agree with this statement, we are going to be as good as our freshmen allow us to be? What I mean by that is I feel that we are going to rely heavily on Tate/Denard on offense and rely a bit on Big Will, Vlad, JT Turner, and possibly Roh on defense. If they all play poorly, then I think we will have another terrible year, but if they play like sophomores then I think we could have a very successful and surprising record this year.

Anyways, my rant is over. What do you think?

I used the Spring and Fall rosters from www.mgoblue.com . It's the only thing I could really use outside of mgostalking them in the dorms.

The person that prompted the post was LaLota. He was listed by Brian in his recruiting round-up post at 260. Brian then noted that he showed up on campus at 230, and was listed in the spring roster at 234. When he was listed at 256 on the Fall Roster, my interest was piqued as to the other early enrollees.

As to your question - partially. Tate's as ready as a true freshman can be and we'll need him to play well. He needs to spread the field so that the O-line and running backs can be effective.

On defense, BWC will be a good backup, along with Sagesse, for Martin. Emilien will likely be backing up Williams and Woolfolk, and Witty and Turner will probably be playing as CBs behind Cissoko and Warren. Also, I think Roh will be starting by the Delaware St. game as he's taller and bigger than Herron.

These guys are all rated highly for a reason - I think they'll get it and they want to be part of this turnaround. Plus, a number of them know good players are arriving in 2010 (Tate --> Devin, Emilien ---> Marvin, Witty and Turner ---> Avery, and probably Christian and Ifill, maybe LaTwan). They'll want to build up some credit with the coaching staff to solidify their roles going into the future.

I think enough is there in the starting units to win 8-9 games, if injuries and turnovers are minimized.

Would it really be that bad if you toted around a medical scale with you into the dorms and asked them to stand on the scale while you also get their height??? You sir, are a bad MGoStalker.
