Are you stupid, or do you agree with me?
For some reason, people assume that I agree with them politically-- and I have no idea why, though I think its because I really try to have a interested aloof-ness when it comes to politics. People whom I have barely conversed with will suddenly begin to make snide remarks about the other end of the poltical spectrum which I don't believe they would make to someone who espoused those views. Its kind of like my marriage: I share opinions about people with my wife that neiter of us would dare say to many others because we tend to have a very similar read on people. I have many close friends-- most of whom I knew in high school, actually-- that I disagree with on everything political and religious, but we have similar tastes in music and alcohol (what else are good friendships built on?) and we call one another names like "commie bastard" and " stupid facist" in good fun. I think relationships such as these are built on two prinicpals-- 1) both people have to both genuinely care about the issues and really believe that what they think is the best way to solve thos issues; 2) they have to be willing to change their mind. I know for a fact that my own view have been modified directly because of conversations I have with them, and I have been told by at least two friends that they found themselves agreeing with a few points I made weeks after the fact.
