8/21 Non Revenue Weekend

Submitted by formerlyanonymous on
Since Sunday posts can be lost over the course of a week, I'll be attempting to at least get a diary out to remind you what's going on this weekend. This one's pretty short with just women's soccer playing real games. Hopefully these get better.  - FA

Just a reminder to any one who cares (which is probably very few of you) that the first official sports match of Michigan's 09-10 school year is tonight as the women's soccer team takes on Arkansas in Ann Arbor. Kick off is slated for 6pm at the U-M Soccer Complex. Live stats are available.

Arkansas was picked to finish second to last in the SEC West in the preseason coaches poll. They return seven of their top scorers from last year, but they also have a new coach. Michigan should be able to take this game, but it will still be tough. Make it out if you can tonight, the team would appreciate it.

They will also play a road game at Valparaiso on Sunday at 5pm.  Valpo was picked 6th in the Horizon League in their preseason coaches poll. Michigan should be able to defeat the Crusaders easily, but only time will tell.

For more on the women's soccer team, check out last Sunday's Women's Soccer Season Preview.

The men's soccer team will play their second exhibition in Ann Arbor on Sunday at 2pm against West Virginia. Again, live stats are available. The team played to a 0-0 tie in their first exhibition against Marquette yesterday (Thursday). They will not have an official game until Tuesday September 1st at Notre Dame, and we will have a season preview up before they start.

UPDATE
: Paul went to the game against Arkansas (Michigan lost 2-0). He'll give his thoughts on Sunday.

I appreciate your updates. I really, really do. But I do want to know what it's like to toil in obscurity. Edit: Since I already got negged six for this, I figure I should add that, in case you didn't notice my first two sentences, this was not an insult. At all. I just found it funny that the post had been up for something like an hour and had zero replies.

My friends niece is a freshman for Arkansas.... whole family in Michigan was at the game. As info... I think we have a long way to go to compete... the rebuild job we have in womens soccer will take much longer than RR will.

damn, Arkansas 2-0 Michigan. no worries, I'm just happy the fall sports season has kicked off. I'm sure the ladies will recover besides its a rebuilding year for them as per your last Women Soccer post, yes?

Keep the updates coming, especially with soccer! Soccer has the potential to be a pretty popular sport at Michigan. From my experiences, just as many people at Michigan played soccer in high school as those that played football (I guess it being a two-gender sport helps). Add to that the international community at Michigan, and I think there could be something there. Soccer and volleyball are probably my favorite non-revenue sports (not counting baseball and softball for the sake of obviousness). I'd encourage everyone to get out there and watch! They're a ton of fun!
