I wanted to see how many prospects Michigan will be targeting for 2011.  I took the Depth Chart by Class and modified it.

Kelvin Grady is in () because it is unclear whether he has a scholarship or not.  I am leaning toward not simply because he is not financially strapped and does not need one.  He is not counted in the total

DE S. Watson or SS M.Williams are uncounted because they are buried on the depth chart and unlikely to be asked back for a 5th Year.

LB B. Herron is uncounted because it is unlikely he will see the field this year or the next and will not be asked back for a 5th Year.

I would like to know what actual football people think about whether those 3 players will be asked back for a 5th Year.

SCHOLARSHIP COUNT: 65

Current Commits: 11 (this includes Antonio Kinard)

I believe Michigan will be looking to sign 9 more players for the Class of 2011.

GO BLUE!

I've heard differently.  Jerald Robinson was on track to play after spring practice, but he apparently had some maturation issues this summer and has fallen off.  It's not about being "raw" - it's about putting in the time running routes and in the weight room.

to hijack this thread, but conelius jones is no longer at prep school he checked out after the first week. no cell phones, no visitors,  Military Prep school is not for everyone.

keep in mind that the coaches may not elect to use every scholarship just for the sake of using it. with the exception of maybe terrence robinson, you have to thnk that all redshirt seniors in the class of 2013 will come back for a 5th yr (Cox, Roundtree, Moore, Mealer, Demens, Khoury, Omameh, Floyd). that means only 12-13 people leaving after the 2011 season + any early departures (plz no more!).

An interesting thing to consider is that if we have a good season in 2010, we could be getting interest from higher caliber recruits in 2012 recruiting cycle. if thats the case, it might be in our best interests to hold onto a couple of schollies as to increase the number available for the 2012 recruiting class.

I think you're hasty about not giving a fifth year to Herron, who saw quite a bit of time last year, and Michigan will just about have to offer Kovacs a full scholarship after the year.

I would expect to see that LB back if there are only 7 on scholarship, especially with only 1 committed.  I'd say the same thing about the DE with only 5 on scholarship though the incoming class is quite a bit stronger there so you may be correct.  If the SS is strictly a strong safety then I would again agree with you, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him retained as well with the limited depth at FS and CB.

No way that Watson (DE) gets a fifth year.  Good kid who has given his best, but will not likely see the field in any meaningful way.  Remember that having 5 Strong Side DE's on scholarship is quite adequate since in our 4-2-5 scheme there is only one true DE with the other being the Death Roe hybrid.  Five guys with four of them being underclassmen is quite good depth at a position with only one starter.  That said, we may pick up one more true DE in this class because Beyer is slated for the Roe slot and Rock may grow into the 3 Tech Tackle/End position.

I agree that Herron should be kept on for depth and special teams, and Mike Williams can be valuable as well.   IMHO Carvin will fit better at FS and Teric Jones will stay at corner but time will tell.

To Blue in SEC Country:

The OP thinks that  J. Robinson will be the only freshman WR to see playing time this year; thus he is the only one without an *.  IMHO Miller will get some PT but not the other two.

I've heard that Jackson's had the most reliable hands of all the freshman WRs so there's a chance that we see him as a goal-line and short yardage type receiver. Not sure if I'm off base on that or not, but his size could be very useful for us because we don't have many big WRs on our team

I think Herron and Williams are both likely to return for fifth years.  Herron might be Roh's #1 backup, and there isn't anyone in the freshman class who's likely to play much at Roh's position in 2011 (Davion Rogers will still be a beanpole, Wilkins and Paskorz are playing DE, etc.).  Furthermore, Fitzgerald would probably take one of the ILB spots.

Williams started for much of 2009 and he'll probably play a fair amount in 2010, even though he's a backup.  Just because he's a backup doesn't mean he's not worth having on the team.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if Watson departs.  He's only played a tiny bit in his career - mostly against Delaware State.
