2010 Schedule Wallpaper - Sibling Rivalry - Game 6 Michigan State
My "little" brother is now several inches taller than me (and carries several more pounds of muscle) but when we were kids I owned him at nerf basketball, knee football, one-glove boxing, living room wiffle ball and any number of other outdoor sports that we adapted for indoor play during our scorching Arizona summers. The release of Nintendo games like 10 Yard Fight, Tecmo Bowl and Double Dribble gave us a new outlet for our never ending competitive battles, and here was another arena in which I was seldom defeated. Seldom. Mostly I experienced victory, but those of you who grew up with little brothers know how aggravating it was to be defeated by them. Losing to a little brother felt very different than losing to a peer, and on the rare occasions when I experienced back-to-back defeats it changed my amused, condescending attitude toward our "rivalry" into unquenchable competitive fire and I could not rest until I had regained my crown.
That's way more of an introduction than a wallpaper deserves, but replace me with Michigan and my brother with Michigan State and the story above is a pretty good description of how I feel right now about the Michigan/Michigan State football rivalry. Yes, we have more than twice the number of wins in the rivalry and there's the national championships and the Heismans and all of that, but after two consecutive losses it's not enough to have dominated them in the past.
Fast forward several decades and my brother is a strapping fire fighter and I am a pale and balding desk jockey. We rarely play video games anymore but when we do, the same competitive edge returns and suddenly we're 9 and 12 year olds again. I bet it's the same for many of you. I've couched (wait for it) this homage to brotherly competitive fire (yes, I see what I did there) in video game imagery as a memorial to the veterans of 8-bit battlefields and their modern-day counterparts.

Again monuMental you have outdone yourself. Bravo, this one is my favorite behind the DRob figurine.

Glad you like it. It's a tossup between this one and Touchdown Jesus as my second favorite.

this is great, different from your other ones but equally cool.
Is the :01 in reference to clockgate in '01?

That's correct. Thanks for noticing.

The hype was worth it! Well done!

Thanks JH. I thought you'd enjoy it more if you saw it instead of having it described to you.

We are not worthy.
Even my desktop is in anticipation every week for your genius. Seriously, I turn it on, and a message flashes saying "Has monuMental created a new wallpaper yet? 'Yes' 'No'". Sometimes I have to lie and say yes, or it'll shut down in protest.

That is fantastic!! You are truly a genius!! Keep 'em coming!
GO BLUE!!

I know it's probably a little ungrateful to nitpick - but how about giving little brother a white belt? Even without it, looks beautiful, and very well done.

I hadn't thought of giving the little brother a lower level belt. Good idea. I appreciate the input.

Love it! The subtleties in the background are great.

you've added another dimension to the unique quality of this season. I look forward to these and your work is much appreciated.
Thanks!

How is one able to download the wallpaper to their iPhone?
If I open it using the iPhone there seems to be no way to save, and when I open it on the desktop computer there is no easy way to transfer it to my phone.
I am obviously missing a step. Can someone please explain?
Thanks!

After you open the mobile wallpaper in your iPhone's browser, touch the picture and keep your finger on the screen until the save dialog slides up. You'll see a "Save Image" button; click that and then return to your Home screen and open the "Photos" application to find the saved wallpaper and assign it to your Lock and/or Home screens.
I have my iPhone Home screen so that the first page only has one app displayed. That lets me have the schedule wallpaper fully readable when the screen is unlocked (I find that the lock screen timeout doesn't always give me enough time to read through the list of upcoming games).

So, as I am sitting here staring at my computer waiting for its internal clock to tell me it is 5:00pm and just one more day closer to me being in Ann Arbor, I noticed big brother only has 4 toes. I can only hope that is because he kicked little brother so hard his toe fell off.

I went to get the new wallpaper (I know, I'm late!) and it appears to not appear no more.

Wow, that sucks about the cease and desist. You're correct, I didn't realize you were hosting the artwork on your business web site.
I wonder if they'd have a beef with you hosting the artwork elsewhere (ImageShack, Flikr, etc.)?
October 7th, 2010 at 1:19 PM ^
Yeah, total bummer. From the beginning I kept a seperation between my business and the wallpapers (like, purposely not mentioning it on this blog or on the wallpaper download pages) and never linked to my business content from the wallpaper pages on my site. That said, it's totally fair for the University to protect their trademarks and student athletes when the percieve a business motivation behind the use of their properties.
I think the problem they have is twofold: 1) they thought the action figures were real and being manufactured, and 2) I hosted the content on my business web site. I did that to save money but really probably should have hosted it elsewhere from the start.
I have asked if they have a problem with the wallpapers if I host the content somewhere else and it sounds like they're taking the time to talk it over, which I appreciate.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Oh no this sucks! I've been loving the weekly wallpapers and have used the new ones every week. Good luck sorting it all out.
