The 2009 Recruiting All Name Team
I’m always a big fan of the best names in our favorite sport. Tshimanga Biakabutuka will always be remembered for crushing Ohio State, but the name is equally memorable.
Here is the 2009 Recruiting Year All Name Team (subtitled “Names That Make Mike Patrick Sweat and Have Another Gin and Tonic”):
QB (pro) - Nyk McKissic
QB (dual) - Shavodrick Beaver (you will be missed. Sigh.)
RB1 - Dasatre Yarnway
RB2 - TIE Nubian Peak, Dontae Aycock (wink wink, nudge nudge on both)
FB - Simione Vehikite
WR1 - Vondrae Tostenson
WR2 - De'Von Flournoy
WR3 - Uzoma Nwachukwu
TE - Zico Pasut
OL - JerQuari Schofield
OL - Claudyson Calixte
OL - Caylin Hauptman
OL - Fono Vakalahi
OL - Laman Toiaivao
DL - Stansly Maponga
DL - Tevita Finau
DL - Radermon Scypion
LB - Vontaze Burfict

LB - Barkevious Mingo
DB - Prinz Kande
DB - Jideofo Okwudiri

DB - Romel Dismuke
ATH - Ebenezer Makinde
Amazingly there were no kickers that really made the cut, although I admit after reading a bazillion names the bar kept getting higher.
I would like to point out that for some reason this year, USC really cleaned up in the bizarre name department. And I'd also like to point out that it’s more than likely if Hawaii played LSU that would make even Pat Summerall cry.
We hope you enjoyed this edition, and we further hope Mike Patrick is considering a move to PBS or Alcoholics Anonymous.
See you all next year.

Please tell me that Quetzalcoatl Carrasco is headed to San Diego State.

out of all the names this was the one that stood out to me too.

Here's his Rivals profile

I played baseball against Quetzalcoatl Carrasco. He played for Ypsilanti, and my team from Rosedale Park in Detroit beat them in a sectional playoff to advance to the State championships. That was 04 I believe. Ypsi was so sure they were going to win they had someone with a plane skywrite a "Y" that slowly turned into a lowercase "r" for Rosedale as we won.
He played for Ypsi football last year, and went to Hargrave Academy to prepare for football in college, I guess.
Kind of awesome to hear about him these few years later. What a name.

I never thought I'd run into a name better than "Craphonso" (Thorpe), but this one does it. Amazing. Does he have a brother named Montezuma?

Barkevious is pretty spectacular too.
To think, we could've had two possible Roman emperors on one team in Barkevious and Martavious.

Come on...I know its sort of like Pac Man Jones, but still, a linebacker named Poo Bear Mars?

I obviously didn't see that one, but that's an all time great name.

But it how he's listed on scout.

I was sorting through Rivals, and his real first name is something less cool. Basically I saw "Adam Jones" and moved right along.
Incidentally, I also strongly considered Ray Ray Armstong, but just because I love the name Ray Ray.

No Rantavious?!?
Also, not sure about the identity South Pacific islander == bizarre.

Yeah, I draw a distinction between names that are simply of ethnic origin (Abdallah Homayed is another one), which I don't really like to laugh at, and ones that are just plain made up.

USC has Burfict, Fanqupo, Flournoy, Harfman, Kennard and Vekihite. Only one of those sounds SP Islander to me, and I've never heard of the other surnames before.

How doe De'Von flournoy beat out Rantavious Wooten?
January 31st, 2009 at 10:02 AM ^
For me, it was the last name on that one. Maybe you live in an area awash in "Flournoy"'s, but I'd never heard that one before. It sounds medieval.

I've been unofficially following this growing trend for years...
One that always stood out is former Tarheel wideout Jarwarski Pollock.
Maybe that really is why I've been so fixated on signing Mingo...?

...we had a kid name Olatide Ogunfaditimi (Oh-lah-tee-day Oh-goon-fuh-dih-tih-me) was a walk on wide receiver Michigan.

Could you imagine in 3 or 4 years when these guys will be going into the NFL? Put the star rankings aside and pretend they all might make it.
...."And with the first pick in the 2013 draft, the Lions select Quetzalcoatl Carrasco....with the second pick the Lions select Jideofo Okwudiri....with the third pick the Lions select (they will be bad enough by then that the Federal government will force the NFL to grant the entire 1st round to the Lions for 2013 claiming unfair assessment, acquisition, and coaching of talent by every other NFL team).
