1. BiG; 2. THE KNOWLEDGE CHALLENGE

Submitted by THE_KNOWLEDGE on

.
in this important diary, THE KNOWLEDGE shall discuss two items
.
1. BiG (Basking in Glory):
when the WMU horses took the opening kickoff and scored on a long touchdown drive, THE KNOWLEDGE started receiving notes that cast aspersions on the THE KNOWLEDGE's post on these very pages saying that Michigan will restrict WMU to less than 17 points
.
yes
.
Well, THE KNOWLEDGE was obviously right, and the doubters wrong as usual
.
THE KNOWLEDGE has been basking in glory again as all of the review came to fruition (Michigan's score actually should be 37 points, as the referees incorrectly stopped the game before the field goal on that last drive)
.
2. THE CHALLENGE
this week marks the debut of night game at Michigan Stadium. An even more exciting debut for the readers of this blog is the debut of THE KNOWLEDGE CHALLENGE for this year
.
yes
.
correctly predict the score of the M-ND game to receive the great honor of Protege of the Week
.
THE KNOWLEDGE shall provide pointers to the game as usual to help those currently unaware of the game results
.
yes
.
Pointers:

  •  Michigan wins
  •  Notre Dame loses
  •  ND's offense is more effective than it was against USF
  •  Michigan's offense is better than last week, but ND's defense is better than WMU's
  •  Denard scores touchdowns
  •  The game is competitive

.

yes
.
as you might note, these pointers are very generic and somewhat tough to base a score off of
.
but, THE KNOWLEDGE wants the first week of THE CHALLENGE to be a tough one
.
you can do great analysis, or try to fathom the methods of THE KNOWLEDGE. either way, make the correct prediction to be the POTS
.
yes
.
Important note: some of the future editions of THE CHALLENGE will be posted as a forum topic instead of as a diary. hence, be vigilant and participate before it disappears from the front page

28 to 30 for  Michigan. Our third field goal of the day comes with little time left on the clock for a come from behind win. Finally, the kicking game gives us a win instead of a loss . . .

The ND QB corps moves the ball, but they also throw to the wrong color shirts. For the second week in a row, ND gets yardage but gives the ball up too easily. Cierre Wood also puts the ball on the ground, and it's just too much to overcome.

Jake Ryan continues to fly across the field as Gordon's back holds him out. The d-line is better, but not nearly what we'd prefer. Mattison makes adjustments and keeps us in it . . . .

UM-28 ND-24

Also Denard throws for two touchdowns and adds another on the ground.

Finally, Lou Holtz dies drowning in his own saliva as ND does not reach his expectations yet again.

1.  Who are the fools negging this diary?

2.  I really thought ND was gonna win a close one.  But with the Knowledge that Michigan wins I'm gonna say 31-28 with a late TD by Michigan sealing the deal.

For Michigan and Notre Dame to both score 879+837=1716 points would be a staggering score indeed.  Assuming a maximum touchdown and 2-point conversion are scored each possession for each team, this score would require a minimum of 215 possessions, minus whichever drives were somehow stopped by Michigan instantaneously resulting in turnovers with no loss of time during these drives.

With this modest fudge factor in place (I'm building up to a point, I can feel it): 60 (minutes in a football game) * 60 (seconds in a minute)=3600 seconds.  3600/215=16.7442 seconds, on average, for each drive.

Such a short timeframe to score eight points, unendingly, every 17 seconds would eliminate any time for offensive possessions.  Each kickoff would be returned for a touchdown and a 2-point conversion scored on the next play.  Think about seeing a game like THAT played live.  Every fan for both sides would seesaw emotionally as their special teams made a spectacular, game-changing return-for-touchdown--only to see the special teams give up even yet ANOTHER beautiful long return for a touchdown!

42-16.  Turnovers plague a purple-headed coach, as they give up the ball 5 times again. This time Kelly's head does explode, and they name an interim head coach at halftime. Much like a previous UM v ND game, we start with a pick six. The next play we run on offense is a 75yd QB sweep by Denard. Crowd is wild, atmosphere is ridiculous... God, I can't wait to go to this game on Saturday!!!! It's my 3rd UM v ND in my life, and only my second witnessed in the Big House.

Barn-burner of the Week.  Denard runs for 201 and 3 scores and adds another 250 through the air (with an unfortunate 2 INTs).  Hemingway scores twice, Kovacs scores once.  Meanwhile, I have a heart attack in the stands and vow never to attend a Michigan game again when they go down 42-41 late in the 4th quarter.  V.Smith brings me back to center with a 95-yard kickoff return for a TD.

. . . YES . . .

In a game that is never in doubt.   Offense looks totally different, less designed runs more passes / scrambles.   D dials it up from play 1.  ND QB shuffle continues.  At least one leaves game after being knocked silly.

I arrive home at 3 am.

Surely, THE KNOWLEDGE knew that THE KNOWLEDGE would receive notes casting aspersions on THE KNOWLEDGE's predictions, being able to transcend the temporal dimension that restricts us lesser beings.

Similarly, THE KNOWLEDGE no doubt has already seen what weaker minds will perceive this coming Saturday night.

THE KNOWLEDGE thus already knows that I will predict this, but I will still proceed with my feeble attempt, absent the ability to bend time and space:

UM - 31

ND - 28

Fearless bonus prediction: game will be decided in the 4Q (no OT).  Oh, and it will be night time.

Yes.
