So the Capstone Report, an Alabama blog run by people who have carved stomas into their necks because mouthbreathing is beyond them, thinks that this Rodriguez quote from the weekend…

"Stay tuned. There's a couple guys I'm gonna sit with here. Just guys that maybe if they're not doing all their responsibilities and doing what they need to do to be part of our football program may not be back. I hope that's not too many."

…is the same as Nick Saban's flood of suspicious medical redshirts and unexplained transfers. There's no amount of careful monosyllabic explanation that will get the point across to them so I'll dispense with the humorous talking-to-cavemen schtick and just talk:

Michigan signed a recruiting class of 22 despite having 25 openings. When Rodriguez talks about people on the team who are not meeting expectations he's referencing Kevin Grady, for whom "not meeting expectations" is a kind descriptor, and maybe a couple other people who 1) remain on the team and 2) are, according to the insider rumblings, skating the edge of grade issues. No one has left the team except Wermers, who did so of his own volition.

Michigan benefits in no way from Wermers' post-signing-day departure. In the unlikely event there are a ton of injuries on the line, Michigan will be forced to reach down to a walk-on instead of Wermers. And over the course of the next year there's some chance Wermers would have played his way up the depth chart. No one else has left the program. Any speculation as to why these people who haven't left the program would leave the program and whether it's voluntary or not is… wait, why are we talking about this again?

What we've got here is a quote. Not, you know, actions. And this quote can reasonably be interpreted to mean "there are people on the team who need to get their act together in court/academically" instead of "I am kicking losers out." This criticism is based on a willfully unflattering reading of a statement.

Meanwhile, Alabama signed a recruiting class of thousands (32, if we're being specific, with 25 being the maximum that could enroll) despite having far fewer than 25 openings and then rammed down its roster by chucking every disappointing reserve with a stubbed toe on medical scholarship, getting lucky with some armed robbery, and probably just plain cutting one kid. When Saban signed that huge class he knew with certainty that he would have to remove 10-15 players from scholarship. This was unprecedented and sketchy, and I wasn't the only person to think so. Dr. Saturday, then in his SMQB days, on the subject*:

So, with this year's incoming class, up to eleven players who have signed letters of intent to play football for Alabama will have that commitment at least temporarily deep-sixed, even if all 96-98 candidates meet their obligations. The incoming oversign is seven; if half of that number flunks out, or pulls a gun on somebody, or gets caught with a 15-year-old or something - say, four guys out of 32 - the Tide is still seven scholarships over the 85-man limit. Either existing commitments to returning players are cut, or the eligibility of a full third of the `08 class meets some untimely demise before August. The first option - breaking a commitment to an athlete who has met his requirements - is sketchy. The second option - collecting commitments from as many players as possible with the knowledge that a significant number of them have to fail before they even get to campus - is sketchy. Oversigning to this extent is not okay.

DocSat notes in an addendum that no coach in the country other than Tommy Bowden put himself in a position where his class necessitated cuts after the NCAA-mandated drop to 25; Bowden heartlessly cut cause célèbre Ray Ray McElrathbey and is now unemployed. (These are unrelated; it's just that it's pointless to criticize an unemployed coach.)

'Bama's cram-down was so efficient that it saw the Tide get down to like 83 scholarships, which has been taken by Tide coachbots to mean that there was never a problem in the first place. What it actually means is that Saban's cuts were gone through with even after the bonus armed robbery and cocaine so fast you'll freak scholarships opened up.

So these situations are analogous only if your typical dinner is lead paint chips. I think my favorite part of the complaint is this quote lifted from here and intended to be incriminating…

Alabama has every incentive to dump guys. They flat out have to. If a kid is struggling with his academic eligibility how motivated will Alabama be to help him? If a player commits a petty offense how eager will Alabama be to boot him? If Nick Saban knows that by August he has to say goodbye to six kids and it’s July and he’s only got four down, then what?

I’ll tell you what: someone gets it right in the ass.

…that explains the difference. Way to make your point there, guys. Rodriguez is sitting down with these kids in an attempt to get them on the right track towards staying in the program. He does not want them to leave; he would derive no benefit from it. Saban put himself in a situation where he was not motivated but compelled to weed out a half-dozen or more.

Though I'll admit the rhetoric here got overheated last summer, the point remains valid. Their point… is… uh… eh… Rodriguez said something their tiny lizard brains interpreted as Sabanesque.

I hereby resolve to converse solely with multicellular organisms. Play these gentlemen off, keyboard cat.

*(I certainly hope this is a temporary thing, but this post appears to be down. Here's a google cache link. SBNation wouldn't blast the SMQB archives out of existence in a fit of pique, would they?)

That entire comment was at right angles to reality. Cutting guys because "oops we gave out 15 more scholarships than we actually have to offer" is "cause" by your definition? (Maybe all of the cuts Saban had to make were legit. I doubt it, given comments by others more qualified than me to know that if you really want to make someone not qualify, you can, but the problem in the first place is that Saban had no incentive whatsoever to help those who were struggling academically; he needed to give people the boot, so if they qualify it just makes his job that much harder.) And cutting guys because they're in jail and/or flunking out (which is all that the RR quote looks like to me - vague enough that your uncharitable interpretation is plausible, but unlikely since Michigan is ALREADY operating under the scholarship limit and would probably be much better off having those players for now and shipping them off when they have someone to fill that slot if that was their intent) isn't?

"I doubt it, given comments by others more qualified than me" Translation -- "I have no idea what I'm talking about; but Brian said it, so it must be TRUE. He has his own blog, you know." Got news for you--when it comes to Alabama football, Brian doesn't know shit, as he has repeatedly demonstrated. "Saban had no incentive whatsoever to help those who were struggling academically;" This statement tends to reinforce that you simply have no idea what you are talking about. No incentive? Try the Academic Progress Rate. If players flunk out, teams can lose scholarships. That sounds like a damn big incentive to me. Besides, who are all these people that Saban has supposedly cut? A couple of players who weren't going to see any playing time transferred so they could play. A couple of players with documented histories of injury problems decided to take medical redshirts. Don't fall for Brian's BS.

Say hello to Robert E. Lee purple pimple. Phil Sims the Chesapeake Va native of Hickory High the Top QB in the Nation in HS this year has committed to Alabama. We southerns? As if you are speaking for anyone but your sorry ass self. When was the last time you morons in Virginia won a National Title in FOOTBALL. Just say 1938. You do not have a clue. The only person who sucks is you scooter. Your comments are without validation, without adjudication, and basicly suck like you. Alabama has how many National Titles? Care to take a dare at how many NC Virginia colleges have combined in football. LMAO. Zero since 1940. Virginia Tech - 0. Virginia - 0. Shut the hell up. The North can your your sorry ass. Traitor.

If you are not winning National Titles like Alabama you are wasting your time. "Vince Lombardi" after Coach Bryant had won his THIRD National Championship in 1965. So is Alabama wasting their time? They haven't won a championship in 30 years.

Michigan Auto industry as reported by Forbes Magizine and Fortune 500. Who was on Forbes Magizine? Nick Saban. Again bitch get your facts straight. Go look it up scooter. I did.

Appy St. would like a second chance. ASU put that in their paper last week. 92 Alabama, 96 Florida, 98 Tennessee, 03 LSU, 06 Florida, 07 LSU, 08 Florida. That is seven. Where are my facts wrong? 99 Mesheegan, 01 OSU. The previous National Title for the big10 was in 1968 OSU. The numbers don't lie. You do.

Care to take a dare who builds the most cars Michigan or Alabama. Here you go. Alabama since 2007. Mercedes Plant in Vance Alabama and the Hyundai plant near Montgomery. Both these plants reported a half billion in profits. The three big plants in Michigan are lying off and begging for a Washington bailout. Now in the state of Michigan the unemployment rate is the highest of any state currently in the nation. So the slow uneducated Southerns are whipping ass in car sales. THE SEC has won seven of the last Sixteen National Titles. The big10 two in the same time frame. THE SEC has won the last three National Championships in a row. Guess what? THE SEC will win it again this year. Stop worring about Alabama, Ohio St. has your number but we have theirs.

Please answer this question: how in the hell do you know that more guys will leave M because they "don't fit in rich rod's system?" Where has that been written? Where has that been said? Where has that been rumored? When has that happened? Does any of this matter to you? Bama's guys have left. None of ours have (yet). We are under scholarship limits. You're not. We have actual evidence of Bama's behavior, you do not. Saban pushed a guy off the team who DID NOT BREAK ANY TEAM RULE, strictly based on football potential. RR is discussing cutting guys that VIOLATE GRADE STANDARDS, which has been laudable and actually praised for as long as there's been college football. Again, how in the world can you not see the difference? Seriously, please answer that, which based on my reading so far, you have not.

Come on- please get out of your sister's bed for a few minutes and answer the questions we'd all like to know about your accusations: 1. Who are the players Rodriguez cut because they didn't fit his scheme? I'm drawing a blank. Presumably, you are speaking of Kevin Grady who hasn't been cut yet, and if/when he is cut, it will be entirely for violating probation. 2. What players have been cut "without cause"?

It does mean something. It means that you're from a place that cant teach people to read, and generally puts them into careers where they fail (lower median income by $10,000). You went to an auto-entry Rubber-Stamp-Factory. Which means that your inability to understand a basic argument makes perfect sense.

Woody Hayes once said of Michigan. There is an idiot born everyday and they live in Michigan. At Paul W. Bryant's Funeral Woody Hayes said "Paul was the greatest football coach of our time, there will be no one else like him". Woody wasn't aware of Nick Saban. How about them BUCKEYE's.

There is attrition at every D1 football program in the country. You've got 85 kids playing a sport where you run into one another at high speeds. There are 85 sets of grades, 85 sets of temptations, 85 sets of personal problems, etc. That whole "look at the person at the left and right, they won't be here next year" thing that they tell the general student body applies to every football program in the country as well. But normal attrition is about three or four guys. Losing a couple of guys like Rodriguez and Michigan did is normal. What Saban (and I would include Butch Davis as well) is doing can't POSSIBLY be explained as anything "normal." It's even worse than what Tommy Tubberville did when he first got to Auburn (not honoring some scholarships promised to Bowden's recruits). Alabama fans would be far better off simply acknowledging the shittyness of the behavior and shrugging it off. Just say it. You're already thinking it. Don't JUSTIFY it. Say, "We are doing what we have to do to win the SEC. Screw those pesky principles. If we have to run off Mike Shula after a nine-win season, we'll do it. If we have to deliver a duffel bag full of cash for a second-rate DL like Albert Means, we'll do it. And if we have to run off a couple of second-string safeties...by god, we'll do that too."

tempebamafan

Saban hasn't run off a single kid. you people are so convinced that you're right despite having zero evidence to confirm your beliefs. and shula was 6-6 in his last season. 10-2 the year prior. also, fab 5.

3 Medical Red Shirts this know before Spring Training. 2 Academic transfers. 2 2009 recruits counted against 2008 slots. Look it up. Kerry Murphy the Man amoung boys counted against 2008 as did Smith our Freshman kicker who transferred. 3 Players transferring. Prince Hall To Central Washington with two others who never started. 2 Gray Shirts 1 Bryant Scholarship Award. 13 players. Try and keep up. Thanks for getting Rich Rodriquez. I am so thankful he did not come to Alabama. We truly dodged what could have been a huge mistake as you have discovered. You now have his plastic face wife and an offense not geared for the Big 10. Good Luck with Ohio St. I bet OSU does not over sign. LOL Stick to hating your rival its less embarrassing than worring about Alabama. I still so not get why Michigan fans care so much about Alabama. I could care less about Michigan.

Your facts that you state are ridiculous; what does 2+2 equal when you can only count to 2? [RR's wife's "plastic face" really is irrelevant to anything; it is a gratuitous (look it up) insult and this remark deserves complete and total scorn regardless of everything else you have written] You do not address the underlying reasons for the avarious "Bryant Awards" (yeah, that one is a laugh), gray shirts, and transfers. I gave you the numbers but you keep worring about Alabama while Ohio St. whips your butts every year. Work on getting a new coach. I am happy for Michigan and Coach Rodriquez. I am also extremely happy you have a problem with our over signing. Learn how to do the math and show Rich when you get a chance. Is there a BCS in your future or will OSU and Penn St. continue to slap your silly asses around. BTW you clowns have to beat someone in the PAC10 for any validation whatsoever. USC just kills the BIG10 as does the SEC. Illinos, Penn St. and OSU hating life but you guys just plain stink. Try going 12 - 0 in the #5 conference in college football. That is the big10. Oh and if you see that idiot big10 commissioner Jim Delaney ask him to send another open letter to the SEC. LMAO

This has been pretty common for a while, especially at a lot of lower-level Southern schools (I'm thinking Ole Miss off the top of my head right now but I'm sure there are others who've done it regularly). My understanding is that it was usually done on the assumption that a large chunk of the kids signing wouldn't qualify academically (essentially that to get 25 kids to enroll you had to sign 30+). Did Bama just get screwed because an unexpectedly large portion of their incoming class knows how to read (Three cheers for No Child Left Behind!) or is this a new twist on the old practice whereby coaches can force out kids who don't climb the depth chart fast enough? If it is the latter, I almost feel sorry for the players (I would feel even worse if getting an education from the University of Alabama had any value).

because leaving an NFL job after 2 seasons is unprecedented. it's really sad how because of this blog, a bunch of michigan fans are harboring a grudge against nick saban and Alabama simply because you needed a scapegoat to distract people from whats going on in your own backyard. you're all (the authors, and readers of this blog) a bunch of hypocritical douchebags.
