Willie Henry to the NFL Draft Comment Count

Brian

Welp, Willie Henry is headed to the draft, and has set a record for longest screenshot of the Notes app in recorded history.

Henry was an under the radar recruit out of Cleveland Glenville who Brady Hoke picked up on late; his raw power wasn't matched by his technique until this year, when he put together a breakout year along with the rest of the defensive line. In honor of his tendency to hurl people away from him entertainingly he's got a "willie henry throws humans" tag; he played at an All Conference level and probably won't last past the third round. With remaining upside I wouldn't be surprised if someone grabbed him sooner. Any concerns that Michigan's NFL draft streak might end can cease, at least?

In Henry's absence Michigan is likely to move Maurice Hurst into the starting three-tech role; they still go 6-7 deep on the line with quality players. Henry's departure does hurt Michigan's chances of fielding a full-on Alabama-style line. It also opens up a scholarship; Michigan now has 19 spots available and counting.

Not sure who you are upset with here....

He was raw but always physically talented. Was a sleeper recruit - for everyone, not just Hoke/M - for whatever reason as he was from a top OH program . And got much better as his technique caught up with his physical abilities.

I see nothing in the post or comments that is negative about WH or the previous staff except for a self serving fan-ish desire that he stay for one more year despite what his personal best interest might be.

Maybe you should quit drinking and go to bed?

"despite what his personal best interest might be."

We often, due to your correctly described "self-serving fan-ish desire," often times forget their personal best interest is what probably brought them here in the first place, and for that we should be thankful. He came, he saw and to a large degree, he conquered.

The best defensive player in the history of M football left early as well. And soo, too, have many others. What we should do is simply thank all these young men for seeing in Michigan what we see and thank them for their contributions while here. Some could improve their draft status by sticking around and some, like Cardale Jones, not because he was a Buckeye, but due to nothing else than being a perfect example, may have hurt his draft status by sticking aorund and not having a receiver he could not overthrow.

Separate your interests from his and wish the young man the best of luck. It's not hard to do. Willie:  Good luck in your chosen profession. Thank you for working your ass off while here and playing to the best of your ability.

Yeeeeahhh...I think you really picked up on something that really wasnt there at all.

If you are referring to the innocuous statement by Brian you highlighted, its pretty basic and doesnt mean what you seem to think it does.

Brian said Henry was under the radar and picked up by Hoke = True

Henry was always super strong and powerful, and relied a lot on that but this year added some technique = True, and voila!, he is now going to the NFL.

There is no indictment of Hoke (if anything, its a reminder that Brady recruited well especially DL). And its no heaping undo praise on Harbaugh. Its just a succinct wrap-up of who Willie Henry is/was.

Yup. We get it. Hoke did not do a good job of coaching at UM.

But that wasn't what Brian's original quote was talking about.  The other poster made a leap there, and you are just rehashing something in the past that isnt relevant here.

IMO, this opens the door for Godin's return as a 5th year senior.

Depth Chart? Depth Chart.

WDE
1. Charlton
2. Any one of 6 options

NG
1. Glasgow
2. Mone

DT
1. Hurst
2. Godin/Gary

SDE
1. Wormley
2. Gary/Godin

...we still go 8 deep on the line, but subbing Godin for Henry definitely stings. No doubt about it. It'll be mitigated some because HURST will slide over and he's not as much of a downgrade as it would be going to Godin, but we'll feel the loss. That said, Gary should be better than anything we've seen at that age - ever. So this just gave him more snaps...which was probably needed.

Don't sleep on Elliot. The buzz after the Army game was that he could immediately be a rotational DT (or 5-tech?). Maybe we will eventually get to a near 'Bama level where we can RS high-4 and 5 star guys but we aren't close yet. Can't assume Elliot is equal to a 5th year Godin but guessing there wouldn't be a big drop off in talent...(technique probably).

I'm happy for him doing whatever he decides is best for himself.  However, I do think this is a significant blow to our d-line.  Getting Gary, if he's everything he's supposed to be, could mitigate this, and although our chances look good, it's by no means a sure thing.  If everyone's healthy having Glasgow, Wormley, Mone, Charlton, & Hurst is still pretty danged good.  But, Henry was at times our most dominant d-lineman and his presence will be really missed IMO. This keeps us from going 2-deep at every spot without much dropoff.  Now, we'll probably have a good dropoff from whoever fills in as the second end (unless it's Gary).  And, if we get injuries like last year on the line this could be troublesome.

Remember, the existing players all have a year under Harbaugh.  If they continue to improve at the same rate as they did from last year to this year, the drop off may not be as bad as you fear.

The players coming back have bought in.  They're going to continue to work to improve every day.  Willie was a great player, and he will be missed....but it's next man up.  The TEAM!

Yes, Wormley, Glasgow, Hurst, & Charlton have proven themselves as quality players.  We all assume Mone will as well due to his recruiting profile, size, and practice buzz before his injury.  But, he has yet to do much in college, so to assume he'll be as impactful as Henry for example is making a big assumption.  After that Stroble, Pallante, and Godin saw time, but none look to have the ability to be more than a plug-in at this level.  They aren't young any more, so they probably are what they are.

That means we are relying on RS freshman Shelton Johnson or Reuben Jones, who weighed in at 225 lbs as a freshman or Lawrence Marshall who did not see a snap all year.  One of the RS Fr. has alreayd moved to MLB, but I forget which one.  Beyond that we're hoping one of the true freshman...Gary, Kemp, Elliot, or Ron Johnson Jr. to be ready to compete as a true freshman.

I think we can count on 5 quality players for rotation (Wormley, Glasgow, Hurst, Charlton, and Mone), which is great if they stay healthy.  But, if one goes down, particularly if we don't land Gary, we are looking at either a big drop off in talent, or asking guys to contribute before they're probably ready.
