I went on a mini-tirade the other day about how it's unrealistic to expect all of the players on our team to be saints and to never run into any kind of trouble. I'm a realist above all else, and I understand that kids will be kids, even in college when they're supposed to be turning into men.
However, I think a lot (read: almost all) of Michigan fans are glossing over Latwan Anderson. There is legitimate interest on his part, he wants to visit very soon (before the season starts), and the only reason Michigan has slipped is because the other schools have been in touch with him more (note that this is a non-contact period...but I digress). People see a top 40 safety prospect with serious interest in Michigan, and they start drooling. Expectations are tempered because he's at Glenville now, but it seems that everybody would welcome him with absolute open arms.
Count me out. Let me remind everyone why he is at Glenville in the first place - he was kicked out of St. Ed's. Not suspended, not benched, flat kicked out. He was not welcome there anymore because he was involved in some kind of incident. If we're willing to look over that, okay. Austin White isn't Mr. Perfect either, but he's still at Stevenson. Latwan had to transfer to a new school. And although it was deleted by Mr. Beaver, there was a post on GBW last night by someone who attended the Gridiron Kings camp in Florida. Basically, an attitude adjustment is needed, and that's putting it lightly.
Consider this: Ohio State is waiting on offering because they want to see if his character and grade issues improve. Think about that for a second. The school we all associate with pure evil and a haven for academically delinquent trouble makers isn't offering because of character issues. Do they have that luxury because they loaded up on DBs last year? Perhaps. But it's a top 40 player at their #1 school. They'll be damned if they let him go to Michigan...unless they see something that raises red flags. Say what you want about the Vest. God knows I hate him like poison and I can't wait for the day RR gets the best of him - but in recent years, he has been very careful with some of the characters he takes on. He took bad PR hits in his early years with Clarett and all the other criminals. But since then, they've been working harder to clean up. They cut Bradley McDougald and Devoe Torrence loose because of legal issues. Jamel Turner is hanging on by a thread while he heads off to Valley Forge Military Academy. One more slipup on his part, and OSU will cut him loose.
This isn't "Michigan arrogance" speaking. He is supremely talented and athletic. If the Michigan coaches deem him good enough, and see any off the field issues as manageable, so be it. I'm not close to the situation, I don't have all the information. But the information I DO have makes me give great pause toward this particular prospect.
I will now don my flame-resistant suit.
