What gives with the inscriptions on the eye black patches?

AFTER I watched 'til the bitter end, I noticed tOSU players sporting the eye black patches with what appears to be Biblical verses written on them. I've seen them randomly on NFL players as well.

TP had Phil 4:13 inscribed on his, and I think I saw the same one on Tebow. Laurenitis had John 17:1. Anyone know what gives with these? I haven't noticed them on Michigan players.

It doesn't seem that hard to figure out. The players are making a statement of their faith. The inscribed verses presumably are of particular importance to them.

Ya, but some of them write other shit on them. Reggie Bush wrote his area code on them. I hope the NCAA bans customized eye black, just because it is an unnecessary distraction.

When opposing players see "John 3:16" they will suddenly be moved to prayer in the middle of the field instead of sticking to their assignments.

Thanks jmblue. I figured as much.

I can understand certain players doing this, those like Tebow, who publicly profess a strong Christian faith.

However, I was wondering if this was becoming some sort of fad. Wish I had caught the ESPN story.

Some of the players "making a statement" seem to have pretty unChristian-like behavior outside of the team, hence my 'fad' question.

As Trent was leaving the sidelines some big fat OSU player (not in uniform, wearing a letter jacket) was taunting him. I SWEAR THAT WAS BOREN. Anyone else see this?
