West Virginia Writer Thinks Rich Rod is Gone After '09 Season

I'm not the biggest fan of Rich Rod, but, even I think this is a ridiculous article:

is horrendous. The commenters had it right, not a single coherent thought. This comment in particular

'The players don't seem to like his style. The alumni hasn't warmed up to him. The administrators who hired him -and who could fire him -were unhappy they were going to have to be deposed in his legal dispute with West Virginia University.'

shows that the author is basing this entirely off of his own wishful thinking. I feel like the alumni are definitely warming up to RR and I'm pretty sure it was the admin who wanted to fight the buyout. Let's hope we get a few wins so we can stop reading garbage like this.

Well, there are definitely some alumni and administrators who haven't warmed up to Rich Rod (I don't think that this is debatable), but, the suggestion that a coach would be fired after only his second season is just insane. I am of the belief that ANY head coach deserves three years before any serious discussion about his job security can take place, especially one with a track record of success at other programs such as Rodriguez. This isn't the NFL.

I agree with the 3 year rule, but I really do not put much stock in the number of alumni who approve/disapprove of a coach, except it it trends to one extreme or the other. Lloyd, Bo, hell Yost had detractors, and you can always take issue with something a coach does. I think RR will start feeling the heat in 2010 if he does not show some improvement, but at the same time UM has shown a patience that many other schools (such as teams from a certain conference that, let's say, would form the word jumble "CES") clearly no longer employ.

This asswipe should also read the Scout postings about Michael Schofield's recruitment (Schofield's dad posted about the recruitment process) and how the Michigan staff is far and away the most considerate, thoughtful, and researched recruiting team in the country. Also, Schofield mentioned Rich Rod and co. had great "family values." (Mr. Schofield knows his audience).

The determining factor for the use of a singular or plural verb depends on the nature of the collective noun itself as a singular or plural noun. The word "alumni" is the plural form of "alumnus" or "alumna" just as "children" is the plural form of "child."

The original writer is completely incorrect.

If he had said "The alumni association hasn't warmed up to him," he would have been correct, as "association" is singular.

Alumnus - singular, masculine/neutral

Alumna - singular, feminine

Alumni - plural, masculine/neutral

It is never grammatically correct to use alumni as a singular noun. His sentence has to be changed to make it correct, either to "The alumnus hasn't warmed up to him," or "The alumni haven't warmed up to him." Since he is presumably talking about more than a single Michigan graduate, he should have used the latter.

I guess that he missed that whole thing where RR was offered the job at Bama for more money and turned it down. It seems to me if he was looking for a job while he already had one he proably would have taken that one, but maybe you have to be a toothless West Virginian to understand what he was talking about.
