Weekday Warriors 2011: 10-18
This week on Weekday Warriors, Joe Bolden does it all for Colerain, the Harrison duo strikes again, and several Wolverine commits contribute to dominant defensive performances as the playoffs loom across the Midwest.

TN OL Blake Bars
Montgomery Bell (3-5) had a bye last week.
This week: The Big Red play at McCallie on Friday.
OH LB Joe Bolden
Bolden had two fourth-quarter scores—a one-yard rushing touchdown and a six-yard receiving touchdown—to go along with a team-high 7.5 tackles and a sack to lead Colerain to a 28-7 victory over Lakota East. The two touchdown's were the first ever for Bolden as a varsity player:
“All I know is that we practice, practice and the line got a great push and I wasn’t stopping until I got in the red,” Bolden said of his first touchdown. “It was a unique feeling.”
Bolden, who is committed to the University of Michigan, also led Colerain in tackles with 7.5 and recorded a sack.
“It was a big night for Joe. What a great way for him to go out in his last guaranteed home game,” Colerain head coach Tom Bolden said of his nephew. “It was a special night for him, but it was a special night for all these seniors and not just Joe.”
This week: The Cardinals (7-1) travels to Hamilton on Friday at 7:30.
MI OL Ben Braden
Rockford put up 27 second-half points to blow open their game against Hudsonville, winning 44-14 to improve to 7-1 on the season.
This week: Rockford looks to cap off their regular season with a road win at Jenison on Friday at 7.
OH DE Pharaoh Brown
Brown was part of a defense that held Lakewood to just 124 total yards in a 20-0 shutout win for Brush.
This week: The Arcs (3-5) host Parma on Friday at 7.
MI TE Devin Funchess
MGoReader blue22 watched Harrison take down Lake Orion, 28-7, reporting back that Funchess recorded two receptions for 25 yards and a touchdown to go along with a strong defensive performance:
He was also playing LB, though he was matched up as a corner in nickel sets which I didn't know he did. There he had a tackle and an absolute monster of a sack.
All in all, Funchess looked bigger than pretty much everyone out there.
This week: Harrison (8-0) looks to finish with an undefeated regular season at home against Farmington on Friday at 7.
OH S Allen Gant
Gant recorded an interception as Southview held Anthony Wayne (that's a high school, not some dude) to just 79 total yards in a 36-14 victory.
This week: The Cougars plays at Springfield on Friday at 7.
MI DT Matt Godin
Godin texted that he finished with seven tackles and a sack, but Catholic Central dropped their first game of the season against Catholic League rival Orchard Lake St. Mary's, 14-13, due to a missed PAT.
This week: The Shamrocks will get an immediate chance for revenge, as they face off against OLSM for the Catholic League title in Saturday night's Prep Bowl at Ford Field. Kickoff is at 7.
UT FB Sione Houma
No stats are available for Houma from Highland's 22-0 loss to Salt Lake City East to wrap up their regular season.
This week: MaxPreps shows no more games scheduled for Highland, though I assume they are awaiting their playoff draw.
MI LB Royce Jenkins-Stone
Cass Tech dropped their second game of the season to Crockett, 14-9, in the semifinals of the Detroit PSL playoffs. No stats were available for RJS.
This week: The Technicians (5-3) will play Renaissance on Thursday at 4 for the chance to lock up a playoff spot.
OH OL Kyle Kalis
St. Edward dropped their second game in a row, a 17-10 loss to St. Xavier, after starting the season 6-0.
This week: Things don't get easier for the Eagles, who host Cincinnati Moeller on Saturday at 2. I'll be there covering the game, which also features Moeller wideout and Michigan recruit Monty Madaris.

CA OL Erik Magnuson
La Costa Canyon dominated to the tune of a 35-0 win over Carlsbad. MGoReader Jeff was at the game and gave this detailed report:
La Costa Canyon (4-2) dominates intra-city rival Carlsbad (4-2) 35-0. I over heard that Carlsbad was favored by 3 points, but take that for what its worth for high school football. The score was 21-0 at halftime and Eric Magnuson only played till the end of the 3rd quarter. On offense Magnuson played left tackle the entire game (probably obvious). On defense he played 2 series as a lineman in a 3-3-5 alignment. Magnuson was by far the biggest player on both teams and used that to his advantage. Offensively he dominated much smaller opponents. He often had a linebacker aligned over him. On one occasion Magnuson escorted his opponent to the sidelines with a great drive block. La Costa runs the balls to both sides, but when they did go left there was often large holes created by Magnuson. Many times I'd follow him as he made blocks 10-15 yards downfield against the 2nd and 3rd level. Defensively he had about 10-15 plays accounted for in his 2 series. He had some good penetration but Carlsbad ran the ball away from him. He was credited with 1 tackle during his second series.
General notes: Magnuson is all of 6'6" and on the leaner size (I'd guess 250-260). He was very athletic and showed that on a few plays he made down field. He had good form, and when he made mistakes he wasn't punished cause he just had too much size. I'll be interested to see him lined up against a better opponent as he really wasn't challenged on the pass rush. He looked more comfortable as an OT than on defense. He was active on the sidelines and I noticed at one point he appeared to try and persuade his coach to let him back in the game on defense in the 4th quarter. You can tell in his demeanor that he was a leader for his team and kept involved the entire game.

MI DE Mario Ojemudia
Ojemudia had nine tackles and three sacks in Harrison's 28-7 victory over Lake Orion. Blue22 also said he had another 1.5 tackles for loss and "constant pressure" while not letting up a sack at right tackle. Thanks to blue22 as well.
This week: The Hawks (8-0) host Farmington on Friday at 7.
MO DT Ondre Pipkins
No stats for Pipkins as Park Hill dropped to 4-4 after a 31-7 loss to Staley.
This week: The Trojans look to get back on track at Oak Park on Friday at 7.
MI CB Terry Richardson
No stats were available for Richardson from Cass Tech's 14-7 loss to Crockett.
This week: The Technicians play a do-or-die game against Renaissance on Thursday at 4 for the chance to make the playoffs.
OH LB Kaleb Ringer
Northmont knocked off Fairmont, 20-18, thanks to a stuffed two-point conversion in the fourth quarter. No stats were available for Ringer.
This week: The Thunderbolts (3-5) plays at Huber Heights Wayne on Friday at 7:30.
MI LB James Ross
Ross and his OLSM squad eked by Catholic Central, 14-13, to finish the regular season 7-1 and set up a rematch in this week's Prep Bowl.
This week: OLSM will play DCC on Saturday at 7 at Ford Field for the Catholic League title.
OH OL Caleb Stacey
Oak Hills managed to grind out 4.5 yards per carry on 32 rushing attempts, but ultimately fell to Mason, 28-14.
This week: The Highlanders (3-5) head to Fairfield on Friday at 7:30.
IL CB Anthony Standifer
Standifer helped Crete-Monee limit Rich South to just 157 total yards—just 48 of which came through the air—in a 30-0 victory. The Warriors now stand at 8-0, and 2013 offeree Laquon Treadwell finished with seven receptions for 143 yards and a touchdown.
This week: The Warriors end their regular season at Rich East on Saturday at noon.
OH DE Tom Strobel
Strobel finished with ten tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack, and two QB hurries as Mentor drubbed Medina, 45-7. The game was the subject of this week's Creeper Van Original, and the highlights are below:

OH TE A.J. Williams
The Sycamore offense was shut down against Middletown, managing just 121 yards—all on the ground—in a 21-3 loss, their first of the season.
This week: The Aviators (7-1) host Lakota West on Friday at 7:30.
OH S Jarrod Wilson
Wilson helped Buchtel record a 19-0 win over Kenmore thanks to a 35-yard pick six:
The final pass interception was by Buchtel’s Jarrod Wilson on a fourth-and three by Kenmore on their 28 yard line. Wilson, a University of Michigan commit, returned it 35 yards for a touchdown.
“We changed our coverage. I told our defensive coordinator that we should go to man,” Wilson said. “I saw that the tight end was uncovered. I took it on my own to guard him one-on-one. I jumped the route and scored.”
Playmaking safety? [Ed-M ...who dictates coverages to defensive coordinators?...] Yes, please.

Whitmer dominated Fremont Ross, home of one Charles Woodson, holding them to 139 yards in a 58-20 victory.

KY S Jeremy Clark
No stats available for Clark as North Hopkins recorded their fifth straight blowout win, this one a 69-20 beating of Calloway County.

MI QB Shane Morris
Morris completed 11-of-17 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown and added another TD on the ground as De La Salle defeated U-D Jesuit, 28-20.
This week: The Pilots (6-2) play at Plymouth on Friday at 4.
OH RB/S Dymonte Thomas
Thomas had a nine-yard touchdown run as Marlington took down Canton South, 39-6.
This week: The Dukes travel to West Branch on Friday at 7.

Ace, do you have any guesses about whose stock might be rising or falling based on game performances this year? It seems like Ojemudia and Strobel, for two, have consistently good statistical showings.

It's really tough to compare high school players based on stats, considering the often huge disparity in talent and competition (not only for the opponent, but on the player's own team), but I would say that Ojemudia and Strobel have only improved their stock given their on-field performances this season. Pharaoh Brown has actually been impressive enough at tight end that I think Michigan is going to have to at least consider playing him on offense, while the consistent playmaking of Anthony Standifer and Jarrod Wilson is definitely a good sign for the future of the secondary.
That said, I try not to put too much stock into high school stats, especially from games I haven't seen personally—there are just too many variables, including major discrepancies in scorekeeping (I've heard PA announcers credit star players with tackles when they were on the other side of the field, and usually any "official" stats are also taken in the press box). First-hand scouting reports are really where I try to cull most of my information about how a recruit is doing.

The Pharaoh Brown to TE talk is interesting. Considering we have a promising Frank Clark as a frosh and Ojemudia looking better and better (and Jibreel Black is only a soph), WDE is not a major position of need. If Brown moves to TE, we could have him and Funchess manning the TE spots and Williams could move in and play OL. That might be the best way to get the most out of the guys in this class. It's exciting to think about a 6'7" guy who can run playing TE.

Is a big reason why I can only get so upset about the MSU loss. The worm has decidedly turned in Michigan's favor.
As for Anthony Wayne, I assume that the school is named after General "Mad" Anthony Wayne, fighter of the Revolutionary War and of American Indians.

was actually just after the Revolutionary War. The British had ceded Ohio to the US but someone forgot to tell the Indians. The battle happened just outside of Maumee about 10 miles south of the Michigan border. The Anthony Wayne school district does not include the battle site but who cares. This is Ohio for God sake (to paraphrase BH). The battle actually allowed Ohio to be safely settled after the Treaty of Greenville with the Indians (which we promptly violated- this is OHIO FOR GOD SAKE) and the next thing you know they founded tOSU. In summary, its all his fault and we should be mad at Anthony Wayne (the person not the school district).
The twelve square mile area that included the fort and battle site was divided for settlement bustrophredonically! (This is the word of the day and if you say it in the presence of Groucho Marx a little duck will come down to congratulate you but I will you look it up). Here is a clue.

I follow Michigan HS football scores a lot and hearing Mumford over Cass Tech raised a red flag that I had to go check. FWIW, Cass Tech is 5-3 with 2 losses to Crockett and one to Harrison. I'm not sure about the playoff points right now, but they very well might make the playoffs at 5-4 too.

Mentor Beat Medina, not Solon -- at least this week. Solon lost to Stoebel and Mentor a week ago, and was at least able to score 20 points.
As an aside, my son's physics lab partner this year is Solon's QB. He and one of the OL that my son is also friends with commented frequently how Stoebel was on them endlessly all game long. Stroebel is, as my son would say, a beast.
