Bullets:

  • Jake Ryan will be a decision that may or may not have already been made, but you won't know about it until game time.
  • Kyle Kalis was limited in practice yesterday but will be full go today.
  • Dennis Norfleet may get an opportunity to return punts again at some point, but it'll have to be a home game.

-----------------------

Opening remarks:

“We thought we got after it pretty well. Tuesday’s always a heavy work day. Assignment-wise we were pretty good on both sides of the ball. From a fundamental side we have to keep stretching our limits to becoming the best we can fundamentally. I think the guys are really working hard at that. I thought we competed well, and I thought we’re going to have another great workday today with a focus on Penn State but also on us fundamentally getting better.”

Will Jake Ryan play?

“I knew that was going to be the first question. We have another day. We’ll see where he’s at.”

How much did he do yesterday?

“Not much as the other two [SAM linebackers] rep wise.”

Is he holding up pretty well? No soreness?

“Seems to.”

Is Kyle Kalis limited?

“He did some yesterday. He’ll do everything today.”

How did he look physically?

“He’s okay. Pretty tough kid.”

Did you like the way the interior line worked together?

“Yeah. I think there were a couple in there that we need to be a little stouter on, when you’re combo-ing up to a backer, once in a while the tackle or the guard would maybe come off a little quicker than you want. We have to make sure that we’ve secured the first block first.”

Matt Wile?

“I think he did a nice job over the bye week when we went out and kicked and punted. He’s a very intelligent kid. He knows better than anybody what he’s doing wrong, so I thought he had a nice off week. Hopefully we can have the same results this week.”

Kenny Allen?

“Kenny’s been pretty consistent. He had one week in there where he had to find himself again with some of how he was striking the ball. But he’s been very consistent.”

Drew Dileo has been the punt returner the past couple games. Is that what you want to keep doing?

“We’ll go with Drew to start and just see how it plays out a little bit. I think I’d be more comfortable at home with Dennis [Norfleet], getting him back there when you’re playing a home game?”

Is it just because Drew’s a veteran?

“Yeah. It’s going to be a great environment, and Drew’s been in that environment a little more.”

When did you start noticing Graham Glasgow?

“Dick Calderazzo, who played here, and then Kurt Becker. Those were the ones who called. Kurt helped coach at the high school. Those two guys, with both the Glasgows, Ryan and Graham, they felt they were Michigan football players. So that’s what started it.”

When did Graham catch your attention in practice?

“I was lucky enough to work with him last year with the scout team, because I run those cards for the defense and really the five linemen. You could see that he has the ability, the strength. He was competitive, he was tough.”

What do you remember from the Daydrion Taylor hit?

“The whole stadium went silent. For both guys it was impactful. For both teams.”

Have you seen any other hits like that?

“Not like that one. That one was pretty significant.”

Have you talked to Daydrion since then?

“I’ve seen him once or twice. I have not talked to him a whole lot. No. I think Fred’s talked to him as much as anybody, recruiting and those things.”

Devin Gardner said he thought the whispering in practice to simulate the communication difficulties was a joke, but then he saw how useful it was. Did you feel the same way when Al proposed it?

“No. Al’s pretty experienced and he’s done it at a lot of different places. I think we did it at San Diego State when we went to Utah, because that stadium can get loud. And at BYU.”

Did it help?

“I think so. It’s hard for me to remember to be honest with you. We got crushed one year up there at Utah, so it probably didn’t help that game.”

Are you getting the blocking you want from your fullbacks?

“I think Joe [Kerridge] and Sione [Houma] are willing participants. They’re physical. They don’t shy away from the contact. Once in a while we’ve got to have a little better leverage on a block. I think as a staff we all think they’re doing a good job.”

When will you make a decision on Jake?

“Well he’s traveled every game. I could make it Saturday possible. I could make it tonight.”

But you’re not going to reveal it.

“Oh I don’t know. I’ll probably call in and let you know.”

You’ll tweet it?

“Yeah I’ll tweet it, all right.”

Makes him look like he's watching a fat guy devour a live chicken, this picture makes Hoke look like he just woke up underneath the table after spending the night with a bottle of Southern Comfort.

...saw that live. Can still remember who I was watching the football game with, his response (*leaps off of the couch* "YEAH!! That's what I'm talking about!!!"), where we watched it...still remember it was near the sideline and I swear it was early in the game. Really, really violent collision.

It sure sounds like they are at least giving JMFR playing this weekend a hard look. I gotta say, when they first brought up his recovery schedule, my first reaction was "there's no way."

JMFR play and be able to endure the rigors of the game, would be awesome for the rest of the season to finally have our best defender back.

Norfleet was very concerning to me catching punts, I hope he works those issues out because he can be so explosive with the ball, just needs to secure it first. I wonder if his problem is wanting to run with it before he catches it or a deer in the headlights type thing.

The attitude you need to be a punt returner is different than kickoff return. On kickoff return you never get hit before you catch it. Catching a punt is like looking up while running around in traffic. Norfleet is a jitterbug, but Dileo's got the attitude of, "you're not hitting me I'm hitting you." You need that for the first five steps of a punt return. After that, if you are still running, then it's a foot race, and Norfleet doesn't seem to have that all out sprint speed Breaston, Carter, Woodson, Howard, etc. had.

One of these days Norfleet is taking a kick to the house.

On that day no defenders shall touch or whisper at his ankles at all.

and that year 97' of course, I believe that was the weekend of reckoning or something simular to that. Penn State had Beano Cook wrapped around their finger and he fired up the UM team by saying (when asked about this game) that they should "send the band and leave the team in Ann Arbor", BIG MISTAKE. So Michigan had some chalk board material going into Happy Valley, after all Michigan was undefeted. You knew that Michigan would be the #1 team in the land by halftime with the score so lopsided there never was a moment of doubt in that game and it was a pleasure to watch.
