Wednesday Presser Transcript 10-16-13: Brady Hoke Comment Count

Heiko

Bullets:

  • The coaches had to take Taylor Lewan's helmet from him during the game to keep him off the field. He should be good to go Saturday though.
  • Everybody's rotating at guard. Except Ben Braden. I heard second-hand that Joey Burzynski and Kyle Bosch took a lot of 1st team reps yesterday, but who knows what it will be today.
  • I don't think we've seen the last of "tackle over."

----------------------

Opening remarks:

“We had a good practice yesterday. I thought we had a lot of energy. This is a pretty resilient group. I think they’ve proven that throughout the year. I think the leadership’s been good. Especially the senior class and the captains have taken their roles very seriously and have done a great job of how we approach each day. We have a big test on Saturday against Indiana from an offensive perspective. They’re top three in a lot of categories in our league. Have a lot of skill players. I think their offensive line got a little beat up through the course of the year, but they’re very athletic. Run very well in that system. They’re going to try to create some space with different things formationally. Defensively they have some new faces in there. I think the secondary and the linebackers they’re very active. It’s a good football team and Kevin [Wilson’s] done a nice job.”

Potential changes on the offensive line?

“We’ll see. Guys are working hard.”

In the last couple weeks, you’ve known by this point in the week what the switch would be.

“But I don’t know by now this week.”

How many guys do you have rotating at the guard position?

“Oh you’ve got Bryant, you’ve got [Erik] Magnuson, [Kyle] Bosch, [Joey] Burzynski, [Kyle] Kalis.”

Magnuson at guard?

“Yeah, a little bit.

Have you done that with him before?

“He hasn’t done that a lot, but he’s a really athletic guy. He did some good things the other night that warrant trying to get the best five on the field. He’s got a quickness to him. Quick feet. That’s why we recruited him to left tackle. It’s not his athleticism has kept him away from it, but it’s strength gains unlike some of the guys like Kyle Bosch, who’s been in the weight room a lot. Kyle wasn’t necessarily a three-sport athlete. Mags played I think lacrosse also, so the lifting and all that kind of stuff.”

So Taylor Lewan is fine and ready to go?

“Yeah.”

Did he get any concussion tests?

“He saw our doctors. There were a couple different issues that were boo boos.”

You had to keep his helmet away from him after half time.

“Yeah. Well you do that with a lot of guys so you don’t let them get back in.”

He ran on the field at one point.

“Yeah he did. I didn’t see it.”

But you didn’t want him out there.

“He didn’t play after that, did he?”

No.

“So what would your assumption be?

No.

“See, you can answer these questions for me!”

A lot of teams use two scout offenses to try to simulate Indiana’s tempo. Have you done that at all?

“We pretty much all year practice high tempo. I run the scout cards for the defense, so I have the offensive line with me. We do it at a pace so we can get reps of what the plan might be against certain plays so that we cdan see it as coaches and evaluate it if it’s good and all that. So we do that constantly. We’ve got two sets of skill people on both sides, so they’re ready to go. The offensive linemen, they do a tremendous job of finishing and wherever the ball is spotted, I’m running over there. I know it’s hard to believe. We go pretty quick.”

Has you added to that this week?

“It’s pretty much the way we practice.”

How big of a focus is that tempo, though? Especially with your rotations. Penn State got you a couple –

“They got us once. Really. They got us once, and that probably was trying to figure out their personnel with our personnel and to make them match as much as anything else.”

The passion of the fanbase is good and bad. For a younger team, is it harder to block out the noise?

“We talk about the important things that are said are what’s in this room. No one else really matters besides the guys in the room. We’re talking to the team, I think they’re pretty good. I can’t tell you each individual, how they’ll let things affect you. I think obviously the older guys, who have been here have heard the good and the bad, which comes with playing football at Michigan because of the high expectations. I think they’re pretty resilient about moving forward and they’re a pretty tight-knit group overall.”

What’s Jake Butt done to earn playing time?

“We think he can block the line of scrimmage at times pretty well. He’s a guy who’s got good skills when you look at hand-eye coordination and those things. I think the one the other night got knocked out of his hands was knocked out by the corner. This time of year when you’re a freshman, you’re starting to get used to how practices are. The intensity, the preparation, the mental effort it takes to get ready every day, and I think he’s more accustomed to it now.”

It’s been a couple weeks since you’ve moved Funchess to receiver. How has he done?

“He’s done a really good job. I can’t tell you anything where he’s been a play killer, which is a term that Al uses a lot. I think he’s handled it well.”

Is he going to eventually be strictly a wide receiver?

“I don’t think so. As he continues to develop, and I think Al and the guys on offense are smart enough to use him as it fits us now. As he gets stronger and heavier, he’ll maybe be able to do a little more of both, which makes him even more dangerous to some degree.”

Are there any tight end-receiver hybrids in the NFL you point him towards?

“I haven’t, no. Al, he may have. I think that Devin, because of his high school career, he’s used to that space out there. I think he’s pretty familiar with it.”

Chris Wormley had a big TFL and a sack. What have you seen from him? You said he was coming on.

“Well, I think he is. There’s a progression that guys go through from high school to college, but even from college redshirting, or in Chris’s situation, not being able to practice since fall, he missed a lot of that transition you go through. Every time he gets on the field it’s an opportunity for him to grow. It’s a new experience. Maybe it’s taking on a block or a double team, maybe it’s getting knocked on your tail. It’s a new experience in a game situation where he’ll continue to improve.”

He seemed to come free on both of those plays.

“We had two sacks on the same defensive call. They executed it, Penn State didn’t react to it and could have.”

You mentioned that he was a large human being.

“He’s a large human being. Yes he is.”

Is he versatile enough to move in the middle?

“He can move in and play tackle a little bit and that’s kind if what we’re doing a lot with some of our sub defense and matching personnel groups and all that. He’s a very physical and large human that is really learning to understand how much ability he has and how good he can be.”

Are you happy with how the pass rush has progressed?

“Would you want to have 10, 15 sacks a game? Yeah. I’d love to. But people are going to try and keep us out [of the backfield] in some of those exotic blitzes by keeping two tight ends or playing with 12 personnel. That’s something we’ll face maybe not this week, but max protections and those things we’ll see.”

Will it be harder with the speed of Indiana’s offense?

“You know, we’re going to find out. I’m not going to say it’s harder because I think you can do it. I’ve experienced it being done. It can get you rattled a little bit and sometimes that makes it harder.”

What’s the most similar tempo team you can remember playing?

“Oh Central Michigan when we were at Ball State with Butch [Jones]. And Brian [Kelly] was more of a tempo guy back then, too.”

Since you’ve been here?

“Northwestern last year. They’re going to be a tempo team. Ohio can be. Just depends on what mode they’re in. Nebraska a little bit last year.”

As far as backup running backs, would you like to see other guys get a shot?

“There’s no doubt we’d rather have more than one running back so we can share the load, whether it’s Derrick [Green], who played a few spots, De’Veon [Smith], [Thomas] Rawls. [Justice] Hayes got in, and he’s good out of the backfield that way. Yeah. There’s no doubt.”

Sound like a bunch of females calling for borges head... Yes last week f'n sucked but if coaches had this mentality, everyone would be fired after one terrible game. This isn't the pros and trust me, I'm pretty sure the coaches are frustrated... Let them finish the season... Firing a coach midway thru the season would cause this season to implode... We just lost one game... Fucking idiots.... Yea a new offensive coordinator would definitely help us win the rest of the games this season...

Calling people "females" as a derogatory term will not make you many friends around here, but calling people "fucking idiots" will get you booted in a hurry.

play RT and put Schofield at LG where he has prior experience and that would make the left side of the line pretty formidable. Eric showed some nice ability when he came in for Lewan, I didn't notice any drop off hardly.

I would also like to see the coaches, especially Hoke and Borges play with the talent they have and not force them into being something they're not. If that's what we have to do to be successful, well then so be it, I'm willing to be patient as a fan for what we will be like down the road, I want to win, I don't care how.

Lewan-Schofield-Glasgow-Kalis-Magnuson is a combination that could be worth trying. Magnuson would become the only member of the line who hadn't played much this season. Schofield has some experience at left guard, although, in his last interview, he shrugged off any more time at guard. . . . Try it, Mikey.  You might like it.

Schofield is trying to make it in the NFL. The coaches are going to try to help him get there. Not doing so would be bad for recruiting, bad for morale, and just mean - putting him at guard could cost him some money. I wish it wasn't so, but an NFL level prospect T isn't moving inside, and asking him to do so is sort of taboo.

I didn't think Magnuson did terribly against PSU. And considering Lewan went out for much of the game and us figuring our season would be essentially over if we lost him, the line still gave Devin time to throw the rock in the second half for the most part. His TD pass to to Jeremy was a strike coming from a well-formed pocket. He actually had time to step into his throw.

ever since the OSU game last year, I've been wanting Hoke to wear that headset while on offense. He has to be more than a d line coach, he has to have a say when on offense. How can he not have been frustrated with the job Borges did on Saturday. Hate to say it this way, but Urban Meyer wouldn't have sat so patiently by

No.

“See, you can answer these questions for me!”

Not that this is the greatest question (unless it was from our very own, in which case it was a very useful question re: Lewan!) but I guess it's to be asked, but was this particular back n' forth as testy as it comes across in writing?  I mean, are questions not to be asked because there may be an assumption (like there often are)?

and was enjoying the back and forth with the questioner, whoever it was.   Helpful to watch the video while reading the transcript.

Often the questions aren't miked, so my methodology is to read the questions in the transcript, then switch over to the video to watch his replies.  Tongue in cheek is hard to get from a transcript.  (As many of us here learn when our intended humor doesn't translate through the keyboard.)  It's also nice to watch his obvious pride when describing a player's progress.

Clearly it is hard to get nuance from a transcript. These posts are not a transcript. If you listen to the presser and compare it to what is posted you'll find that a certain amount of paraphrasing occurs both on questions and answers. Makes sense given the ughs, ahs, ehems, etc that people insert in to their speech.

I'm quite sure that the poster does their best to capture the critical essence of both questions and answers, but in various cases, info that would provide context is missed.

I am not dissing the poster. The transcripts are uniformly excellent, far better than I could provide. I merely want to suggest that each of us should listen to the presser and read the posted transcript to get the best sense of what the coach intended to convey.

I am as frustrated as anyone with this situation. I follow UM football and basketball religiously. I drive 300 miles round trip to every home game and try to attend at least one road game each season.

I have to believe that Brady understands the pressure and expectations that are on him. He is regarded as an outstanding person and good football coach by his peers. He will never air the "dirty laundry" at the podium in a press conference. He is too classy for that. You have to believe he will make the decisions required going forward to "fix" this mess with the O Line and the somewhat "questionable" play calling. He knows that in order to continue to draw top recruits, it is important for these kids to feel confident that they will be in a position to compete for both B10 championships as well as National Championships.

I think we as fans need to take a deep breath, and allow Brady to continue to guide this program in the right direction which will end up putting us back at an elite level. If he needs to make changes to his staff, I'm sure he will do so at the proper time and in the proper way.

October 17th, 2013 at 4:18 AM ^

What "elite level" are you talking about?

Here's the sad fact: since Bo's first year 20 different teams have national championships, 11 multiple times with Alabama leading the way winning 6, Miami winning 5, Oklahoma and Nebrask 4, even Penn State has 2.

We first have to accept the fact that we haven't really been very elite for the last 60 years. So let's toss out all this "Michigan is back" garbage. We were never "there."

But there's no reason we can't be, but we need a top notch coach. Alabama has 6 NCs because of Bear Bryant and Nick Saban. Let's face it, Brady Hoke doesn't measure up -- not before taking the Michigan job, and not since. If we want to be elite, and I thoroughly do, we need an elite coach with a proven resume.

It's Brandon that has to make the necessary changes to his staff.

October 17th, 2013 at 11:07 AM ^

Were Bear Bryant and Nick Saban born as elite football coaches?

Did you consider Nick Saban an "elite" coach when he was at Michigan State?

I don't know if Hoke is an elite coach. But I give him just as good a shot as anyone else in this spot in their career to become elite or prove he is elite. I know he's a damn good football coach.

I also know there are a ton of idiot posters coming out of the woodwork now saying stupid shit who obviously don't know much or haven't paid much attention to anything.

UMFan95

October 17th, 2013 at 10:23 AM ^

I am not so sure about Hoke leading Michigan back to elite status.  You said the painful truth, Hoke is an amazing person but only a good coach.  Just a good coach will not be able to put Michigan in a position to compete for a national championship.  I lost that dream, and starting to realize more and more that this school doesn't want to be in that status.  While in michigan, hoke has never been able to beat a better team than his.  He occassionaly beats teams that are on the same level but that isn't consist either.  I think that is the issue with Michigan fans including me, we think we should be competing for a national championship every year, while we dont have the talent from players, to coaches, to ad.  The only person is Mattison who i can honestly say he is elite.  I see his players develop, i see him utilize his players potential. Even with him doing all this, Hoke still is in his way.  How can Hoke be coaching d-linemen and not be able to get players to play at a higher level than they are right now.  The weakness of the defense is the position that hoke coach's

You don't build a team on excuses and keep making changes in personal thinking it will be better.  There has to be accountability of player and coaches.

Sten Carlson

October 16th, 2013 at 9:12 PM ^

I read many posters in here crying about nobody being held "accountable." Anti-Borges posters bemoan Borges not being held accountable. But, nobody explains what this mythic "accountability" would look like. Would it be Hoke saying, "Borges called the worst game I've ever seen?" We all know that ain't gonna happen. So what do you want? What is going to make you "accountability zealots" happy? The players, coaches, and staff are accountable to EACH OTHER, not to us fans. Players have said over and over that the coaches don't hold back on them in film/meetings. If they've missed an assignment, they're told so in no uncertain terms. Further, I promise you if Borges or Hoke messed up a TO call, or made a bad play call, they will hold themselves accountable to the players. Pleas explain what you mean.

CompleteLunacy

October 17th, 2013 at 2:07 AM ^

You contradicted yourself. You say you "can't keep making changes" and in the very next sentence say there has to be "accountability of players".

Well, if you're keeping players accountable, then you're starting the ones who deserve to be on the field, which may require changes as various guys develop. And sometimes you don't know what you really got until you see them in a real game. Such is life with a young and inexperienced front.

Does not matter who plays gaurd if they continue with the tackle over, dumbass shit! The talent on the team lends itself to trickery! Old Al, should run those little slot ninjas all over the place to confuse defenses!! Why not pass for 3, then 6 this equals 9 last I checked, then you have 1 friggin yard for a 1st. This, also opens up the field for nice running lanes and for the longer passes. Throw to Drew Dileo!!!!!!!

I wonder if practicing Magnuson at guard has anything to do with tackle over .We can shift a tackle and still have a tackle in his old spot. Hmm. Nah, Borges is a stupid poop head and would never think something like that.

ScruffyTheJanitor

October 16th, 2013 at 10:13 PM ^

In this whole, "Fire Borges" stuff, I think that people calling for Hoke's head are going too far. Borges being fired is something that should probably happen, and hopefully Hoke sees that sooner rather than later.

However, Hoke is just one of those people who is who he is. Is he a guy who is holding up a playchart talking with coordinators the whole game? Nope, and yeah that's probably a shame this year, especially last game.  But seeing Hoke do things like interact with his players, congradulate them when they make a big play, console them when they make a bad one and more than anything-- keep everything behind closed doors-- means that, no matter how bad any individual is struggeling, they will keep plugging away.

In a very convoluted way, I guess I think that he's the kind of boss you'd like to work for and the type of coach you want to play for. I might be biased because he reminds me of my Dad (who is an Ohio State fan), who (I've been told) is the kind of guy who will take the heat from those above him, use strong language to correct the problem behind closed doors, then immediately "forgets" the talk ever happened. So yeah, I'm probably reading a narrative that isn't there, but I am willing to bet that something like this happened. Assuming that a signifigant change in play calling over the comming weeks (this coaching staff doesn't strike me as the type to chage dramatically on a dime), then I will still hold onto the notion that Hoke is a very good head of the program.

So Lewan had multiple injuries after all. Because it sure looked to me like Lewan caught a shot straight to the junk, and the fact he got a laugh out of one of the trainers when they came out to attend to him seemed to confirm it. That duckwalk off the field was not a man with solely a mild concussion.

Folks expressing they wish that hoke would chew some ass should just watch the lead in to the beginning of the last few games.  He looks pretty pissed at RJS I believe and it didnt appear to be pleaasent.  Most troubling for me is at 6 games into the season we still have no cohesiveness up front

FlexUM

October 17th, 2013 at 8:33 AM ^

Why are the questions so "fluffy"? I don't mean to disrespect anyone but we are getting on al and hoke for the answers but the questions are all fluff. I have been listening to browns press conferences all season and they are borderline "answer the question or we'll kick your gd teeth in".

How about "Coach hoke/Al can you specfically explain to us how you can run against teams up the gut on first down when they have 9-10 people in the box?"

or "can even a great offensive line block 10 players in the box on defense?"

"how do you counteract teams putting literally 11 people in the box on first down?"

"on first down when a run is up the gut against a 10 in the box set on defense does devin have the ability to change the play?"

I get this isn't the NFL, and you aren't going to grill the players but what's with all the easy questions? I travel a lot for work and listen to so many NFL pressers and although the post game ones are generic the mid week ones get brutal. They don't except snarky answers of bullshit (unless it's bill b.)

the questions are so "meh" it leaves them the opening to say "uh yeah competition" as an answer.

“I think all play-callers will run the same play if they have success,” Shurmur said. “Sometimes developing a tendency is a good thing. That means you’re good at stuff. I’ve heard that said once before, you know, but then of course you’ve got to be able to make it look like one thing and do another, as well.” Philadelphia Eagles OC

thought that most of us would be talking about Brady's PC. I am just mystified on how this turned into another (Fire Borges) festival. Please, he isn't nearly as bad as u guys are making him out to be. I hope no one with any real connection to the team read any of this. This town is the hardest on coaches, pitchers, hitters, quarterbacks, goalies, draft picks, and any position that is a matter of opinion. Can we paaleeeze get back to the PC and what we think of what Brady said.

the benefit of the doubt.  I'm positive he was not happy with the way he handled the "win time" at PSU.  Time outs and spiking the football, etc.   But it is his job to not blindly believe his coordinators are never in need of a little coaching themselves.

It is plainly obvious what the offensive tendencies are on this football team, and IU will use the PSU model to stop the run.  I will be shocked to see even 30 carries in this game.  IU is going to score and we will need one of our best offensive outputs.  And no one should confuse offensive outputs with running the football.

These pressers are all the same. Generic answers to softball questions. When is somebody going to grow a pair and start asking some pointed questions about this offensive line? Enough of the "we're young". It's 6 games in and they are still standing up, getting blown back, and missing the people they are supposed to be hitting. Someone needs to ask some follow up questions when the coach speak starts spewing.
