Vincent Smith is looking good...no homo

I have watched the youtube video that was posted yesterday a few times. Number two caught my attention in the "wolverine" drill. I checked out the spring roster on mgoblue.com and it was vincent smith, a shifty frosh from florida. It seemed like every time he touched the ball he ended up coming out the other end with it. He consistantly made people miss or broke tackles. I am really looking forward to seeing this kid run. He seems like someone that will help out the offense immediatly. The only thought that is going through my head is if he has break away speed. He looks damn good around the LOS though.

I agree he looked good. But for a running back, I think breakaway speed is overrated. If you've made it to the point where breakaway speed is needed, it's already a good run. Mike Hart had terrible breakaway speed, and I don't have to tell you how that worked out.

i was always kind of envious of other teams that could break a 80 yrd run and get into the end zone. That was the only discouraging thing about hart is that he would run for 30 or 40 yards and we would have to kick a feild goal... But I'm not trying to take anything from Hart either he was one of if not the best back we have ever had.

Don't get me wrong, all things equal you want your RB to have break away speed. But unless the LOS is inside your own 20, if your RB gets into the open field, it's going to be a long run, either scoring of putting you in great position. I'm just saying I'd rather have a guy who is good at getting the first 10 yards than a guy who can break one every now and then.

All that said, V Smith looks like a tough guy to chase down from behind.

I hope you're making a joke. No one said RB speed is irrelevant. As a "running" back, being able to run fast is important. However, having breakaway speed, I submitted, it overrated. Not "because Mike Hart." I was saying that I would prefer a guy like Mike Hart who didn't have breakaway speed, than a guy who has it but rarely gets the opportunity to showcase it. Every RB we will put on the field will be quite fast. In my opinion, getting to the open field it more important than what you do once you're there.

I was going to make a thread like this yesterday. I admittedly don't know a lot about running back vision since I never played running back, but Smith really seems to find holes and make great moves during the Wolverine drill. I know that this is just practice tape so it doesn't mean much, but I think that's pretty encouraging considering the speed that Smith is known for.

Big Will looks monstrous. He will help immensely this fall.

Brandon Minor was making people look foolish.

Tate's throwing was largely accurate, with the right combination of zip and touch. There were no wounded ducks like with Sheridan, and no misguided laser beams like Threet. He will be a definite upgrade this fall.

Definitely agree about Tate. I'd like to see him tighten up the spiral a bit, but he hit all of the receivers right in stride. There's just a marked difference between the passes from Sheridan and him -- Sheridan's passes had poor touch and were just sort of in the general area of where they needed to be. Tate's passes hit the receivers right in stride, which will benefit us greatly.

(The names have been EA Sports-icized to protect the innocent)

HB #2 certainly did look FRESSSSH on those runs, particularly the 2nd one (2:08), but let's look at that one real quick.

LG #56 (-1) whiffed on DT #95, who then, in turn, whiffed (-1) on the tackle thanks to HB #2 (+1)'s quick footwork.

TE #80 (+2) absolutely OWNED S #3 (-2), who was locked up and pushed out of the original lane, and was then turned around and escorted back the other way when the play reversed.

WR #26, playing the downfield blocker, got good position on CB #29 initially, but when the play reversed, he rode the defender into the play. Fortunately for him, the cornerback (-1) then over-committed, running into the pile instead of watching the lane, and thus freeing the path for the runner.

Offense:
HB #2: +1
LG #56: -1
TE #80: +2
WR #26: 0

Defense:
DT #95: -1
CB #29: -1
S #3: -2

Takeaway: I'd say HB #2 is definitely elusive and able to take advantage of what he sees. LG #56 looks young. TE #80 looks like a great blocker, but it's possible the guy he was blocking (S #3) just made him look good. On defense, DT #95 is a big, hulking giant who can dominate with size, but plays a bit too high, and can get beat too easily in space. CB #29 looks like a legacy recruit who's still learning.

And as for S #3, I wouldn't let him near the field. But then again, this is just one play; he could be a 4.5-star, senior 3rd year starter* just having a bad play for all I know.

At the end of the play, S #40 and S #28 slapped each other five. Perhaps it was to wish the next guy good luck. Or maybe they're the guys competing for playing time with S #3...

*Shit.
