USA Today on Will Johnson's bench

More context on Johnson's crazy bench from USA Today Pro-Day article: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2009-03-16-pro-day-update_N.htm

"Neither Smith nor Marks should get into a strongman competition with a couple of Michigan defensive tackles who are projected to go no earlier than the fifth round, though each put on quite a show at their March 13 pro day.

Terrance Taylor (6-feet, 306 pounds) had 37 repetitions in the bench, but 6-4, 280-pound teammate Will Johnson stole the show with 47 reps, the most ever recorded in a combine or pro day event. The previous best of 45 reps were both at the combine, by Leif Larson (UTEP) in 2000 and Mike Kudla (Ohio State) in 2006."

That article says Beanie Wells ran a 4.38 at OSU's pro day.

I can't believe that Alabama's linemen only put up 19 and 16 reps on the bench. That's embarrassing - not only for the players but for the program, too. Morgan Trent put it up about 23 times, I think.

That's either an indictment of Bama's S&C coach, or feather in Saban's cap. Not sure which.

Is anyone else thinking that the Lions should try to pick one of these guys up on the second day of the draft? 5th round seems kind of late, my guess because of the poor season. Worst case, they are a 4th or 5th rounder that doesn't work out. Best case, they steal a DT that immediately makes an impact on the line.

Even with the feats of strength, I don't think Johnson will go any higher than the 6th round. He'll probably be an UFA. He had several years of very little production. Even though his job was usually to tie up two blockers, lack of stats bodes unwell.

Yes, it does. I'm just saying that if scouts are looking at the stat sheet and see that Will Johnson only had 10 tackles and 1 sack (I have no idea his real numbers) for a season, that doesn't look very "productive." NFL scouts want guys who can tie up two blockers AND make plays.

I was watching OSUs pro day coverage and they ran their 40-yard dash on like an actual track. How does this time matter when playing football? Thats why at the combine they ran on the field to show a truer time because they might be expected to...I don't know, maybe play on a football field sometime in their career. Just another way the Buckeyes know how to cheat the system. I can run a 3.9 40 on the moving sidewalk in an airport, maybe I should be a first round pick.

If Barwis manages to prevent man-boobism on the team, then he's well worth whatever he's paid.

In 32 games over four years, Will Johnson had 39 tackles, 7.5 TFLs, and 4 sacks. It's a leap of faith to extrapolate that into an NFL career that's much more than riding the pine, but it'd be great to see him stick.
