Upon Further Review 2014: Defense vs Penn State Comment Count

FORMATION NOTES: Michigan introduced a true 3-3-5 package, not the standup Frank Clark stuff we've seen before. Here's a weird example with Godin, the guy who was usually the nose in this formation, shaded over a tackle. This was for hijinks; more of ten it just looked like a regular 3-3-5.

M nickel-wide

Other than that, standard.

SUBSTITUTION NOTES: A shakeup on the line as Charlton started, as did Mone and Wormley. Henry was out with an injury (presumably one to his thumb); Glasgow was absent for most of the game but then came on late and played well. Super, super weird. Beyer reclaimed most of his PT by halftime; Mone and Wormley were spotted by Hurst and Godin, getting almost equal time.

LB was the usual, except when Michigan went to a new 3-3-5 package Gedeon was the third option instead of Ross.

Secondary was Lewis 100% of the time I think with Taylor getting more PT than Countess; Countess and Hollowell split nickel snaps. I think it was Clark and Wilson at safety with Thomas occasionally spotting Clark but given the way this played out the safeties weren't on the screen much.

[After THE JUMP: Penn State not so much.]

M32 1 15 I-Form Big 4-3 over Pass 4 Fade Taylor Inc
PSU loads up and tries to win one on one on the outside; Taylor(+2, cover +2) has put the WR on the sideline and provided a nonexistent window. Pressure -1; not getting there.
M32 2 15 Shotgun 4-wide 3-3-5 nickel Run N/A Inside zone Charlton 13
M doing wacky stuff. This is a true 3-3-5 with Gedeon on the field and 3 DL, one of whom, Clark, is standing; Bolden is on the LOS. PSU hands off at this; M runs a five man pressure clearly attacking pass pro, with Gedeon in man coverage on a TE located a couple yards from the OT. Charlton(-2) is the outermost guy and cannot get edged; he fights inside and gives up the corner, away from three unblocked M guys. This turns a likely TFL into a big gain.
M19 3 2 I-Form Big Goal line Run N/A Down G Hurst 2
Michigan basically crushes this; Hurst(+1) and Charlton(+1) surge through their guys to hit Zwinak in the backfield, stopping him dead. Ross(+1) also shot in to blast the lead blocker. Nobody can actually get the guy down but they put him on the backside of the play where Ojemudia(-1) is running down the line instead of checking for this very cutback. Taylor(+0.5) does recover to tackle short of the sticks but refs inexplicably give him a first down. Refs -2. They review this and don't overturn it because replay officials will do anything to let a spot stand.
M17 1 10 Shotgun empty 4-3 over Pass 4 Tunnel screen Bolden 10
PSU lines a TE up at RT and splits an OL wide. OL holds his hands up like he's being arrested; Ryan(+1, cover +1) does a great job of recognizing the TE and covers him, so Hackenberg goes to his second option, a tunnel screen M plays badly. Mostly Bolden(-2, cover -1, tackling -1) gingerly approaching the WR and catching a block. Hurst(-0.5) probably should peel back as well. RPS -1; this configuration confused M and took Ryan out of the equation with the TE.
M7 1 G I-Form twins 4-4 over Run N/A Power O Ross -4
Goddamn, James Ross(+2). Remember that gif from last spring practice? He does this in a game, taking the pulling G and putting him on his ass. You can hear the thwack distinctly. This bounces the RB and allows Ryan(+1) to dodge a blocker and burst upfield to TFL, which is a callback to old times.
M11 2 G Wildcat twin TE 4-4 under Pass N/A TE seam Wilson Inc
Michigan lucky here as Wilson is playing run and gets beat; he tugs the TE a little and gets away with it. Rubbin's racin' around here so that's (+0.5, cover +1); throw is long; Thomas(+0.5) was also in the area, making this a reasonably difficult throw for a RB. RPS +1, not taken in by a trick play.
M11 3 G Shotgun trips TE 3-3-5 nickel Pass 4 Sack Gedeon -7
Only the three split guys in the route with TE and RB staying in. M initially rushes three with two LBs hanging out at like four yards—I get one guy is checking the back but other guy is odd. Hack looks; Countess(+0.5), Taylor(+0.5) and Lewis(+0.5) all in WRs' pockets, so he goes into abort mode. Gedeon(+2, pressure +1, tackling +1) reads the TE is blocking and shoots inside of him, sacking Hack as he tries to get outside. Cover +2.

O25 1 10 Shotgun 3-wide Okie two Run N/A Pin and pull zone Wormley 9
M sends five with only Bolden credibly able to LB where the play attacks. Wormley(-1) goes straight upfield and gets hooked; big crease; Clark(-1) is blasted upfield; Bolden(-1) caught inside and tries to go upfield, RB runs past him without delay. Thomas fills just before the first down marker.
O34 2 1 Shotgun 3-wide Nickel even Run N/A Inside zone Bolden 2
PSU only focused on the first down with both DTs taking play long doubles. This allows the LBs to flow free but it's hard to prevent that from getting two yards with six in the box. Bolden(+0.5) does a good job to get to the RB and not give up too much, but if an offense is going to do this on second down they're just going to get it.
O36 1 10 Shotgun 3-wide Nickel even Run N/A Inside zone Clark -2
This is mostly on Belton, who has decent blocking in front of him and inexplicably stops, allowing Clark(+1) to run through the TE's backside block and tackle. Mone(+1) came through a double and was there to tackle near the LOS if Belton just went banzai at the line.
O34 2 12 Shotgun 4-wide Nickel even Run N/A Counter trap Ryan 6
Close to TGDCD but this pulls a guard around to the backside instead of showing pass action. M actually has a play on that should nerf this as Mone(-1) is stunting right into the gap this attacks but he takes too long to get to his spot and ends up with an OL attached to him. He is there to cut space off; Bolden(-1) again lets the back outside; this looks like it's going for more than it does before Ryan(+1) blasts out of nowhere to tackle(+1)with authority and set up a third and medium.
O40 3 6 Shotgun 3-wide 30 slide Pass 5 Dumpoff Bolden 11
Man I don't want to be beating on Bolden so much but this really looks like him again, as Countess(+0.5, pressure +1) has a well timed blitz that gets him around the edge and almost gets the sack; he can't bring Hack down but he does get him moving. Bolden(-1) is sent on a blitz and ends up right next to Ryan, with an OL shoving him outside; he falls; there's a big lane for Hack to step into and toss a little dump. No lane integrity. Bolden has a bad choice between coming up and covering the dump, he chooses wrong because whatever he chooses is wrong. Taylor has a shot at a tackle in a ton of space; can't make it but played it about as well as is reasonable.
M49 1 10 Ace 4-3 under Pass 4 Out Lewis? 13
Coverage here is just super loose and this is an easy first down with little effort. Even if he's way off, Lewis(-1) should be able to hold this to eight or something. Cover -2, RPS -1.
M36 1 10 Ace twins twin TE 4-3 over Pass 4 Flanker screen Wilson 13
Michigan in relatively good position to deal with this but Wilson(-2, tackling -1) takes a terrible angle to this and even though Taylor does a decent job to turn it in at the numbers the WR just runs by Wilson until an ankle tackle at the sticks.
M23 1 10 Shotgun 3-wide 4-3 over Pass 5 TE out Thomas 3
Thomas(+1, cover +1) there to stick immediately on a dink throw.
M20 2 7 Shotgun 3-wide Nickel over Run N/A Inside zone Mone 2
Jet sweep fake reveals man as Countess goes with the WR; run. Mone(+1) shoves the G back, removing frontside options, fights back to the hole as RB attacks it, gets held, no call. Ditto Clark(+1), who swims around the TE's block and pops Zwinak in the hole; LBs converge after.
M18 3 5 Shotgun trips bunch Nickel even Pass 4 Hitch Countess 3
Interesting: this week a bunch sees Ryan nose to nose over the WR on the LOS, although it's a TE this time. He rides that guy; Countess(+1, cover +1) is inside of this bunch and reads the hitch to tackle on the catch. Hack had few other options (cover +1) on a three step drop.

M28 1 10 Shotgun 3-wide Nickel even Pass 5 Rollout corner Countess 20
Michigan tips man coverage on TE motion and gets no pressure(-3) at all on this rollout; Countess(-1, cover -2) is beat on a corner route but that's tough for him for the same reasons the Rutgers 80 yarder was. RPS -2.
M8 1 G Shotgun 3-wide Nickel under Run N/A Inside zone Clark -1
Blitz-slant-fold from M gets Mone(+1) and Clark(+1) through, forcing a cutback to an unblocked Bolden/Wilson. RB trips on OL as he tries to make his cut and goes down of his own volition. RPS +1.
M9 2 G I-Form twins 4-3 over Pass 4 Sack Ross -1
Coverage sack with Ross(+2, cover +2) erasing James on what I presume is a corner route but never gets the chance to be one. Ryan's got eh coverage on a flat route, slant behind this is bracketed, and then Hack is out of time, with Ojemudia(+1) and Beyer(+1) combining to sack. Pressure +1.
M10 3 G Shotgun 3-wide 3-3-5 nickel wide Pass 3 Slant Countess 10
Three man rush, bleah, no pressure(-2), bleah, two LBs sitting two yards from LOS inexplicably on third and goal from the ten against statue QB, Countess kind of beat on slant but requires perfect throw and has a rake on the ball. RPS -1.

O20 1 10 Ace 4-3 under Run N/A Jet sweep Ross 1
Ross(+2) flares out for the sweep, takes on a block, and disengages when the WR commits, taking an angle away from the LOS that forces the WR to hold up as he gets to it; Ross tackles. Taylor(+0.5) also there to help if necessary; it's not.
O21 2 9 Shotgun 3-wide Nickel even Run N/A Power O Bolden 8
Clark(+0.5) takes on James behind the LOS and gets some push, restricting available space considerably. He's set up outside for the most part and Clark is shooting down to contain in the event of a bounce. Despite this Bolden(-2) hops outside, allowing the back to hit the intended gap; pulling lineman doesn't even have to touch him. If Bolden just fills the gap and hits the pulling G this likely gets shut down for nothing. Ryan(-0.5) got blocked effectively and can't do much to stall the play either.
O29 3 1 Ace 3-wide Okie zero Run N/A QB sneak N/A 1
They manage to get it after a long surge forward.
O30 1 10 Shotgun 3-wide Nickel over Pass 5 Improv Clark Inc
Clark slides inside right before snap and Hollowell blitzes. Clark(+0.5, pressure +1) gets some annoyance up the middle after a read(cover +1); Hack rolls away from it as Hollowell(-0.5) gets out of his lane. Hack can't find a WR on a comeback; Taylor(+0.5) in pretty good position.
O30 2 10 Shotgun 3-wide Nickel even Pass 4 Sack Beyer -3
Coverage sack. Hack goes through two reads(cover +2) and then Beyer(+1, pressure +1) comes through the tackle to grab him.
O27 3 13 Shotgun 3-wide 3-3-5 nickel Pass 4 Fade Lewis Inc
Ryan(+0.5, pressure +1) sent, gets blasted by G, keeps his feet and keeps pounding up the middle of the pocket to force a throw. Lewis(+1, cover +1) just about step for step and would be in position to make a play on most balls, it's OOB.

O37 2 3 Shotgun 3-wide Nickel even Pass 4 Rollout hitch Hollowell Inc
Good for the first down inbounds and kind of a compromise play but Hack misfires and it's incomplete.
O37 3 3 Shotgun 4-wide 3-3-5 nickel Pass 4 Improv Lewis 2
Bolden(+0.5, cover +1) finds James on Hack's first read and forces an abort from him despite decent protection. He rolls to the sideline with Ojemudia chasing, finding a WR coming back to the ball that Lewis(+1, cover +1) is there on and tackles immediately to force a fourth down. Hoke calls TO with three seconds left.
O39 4 1 Shotgun 3-wide Prevent Pass 4 Sack Beyer -4
Max pro but Belton doesn't understand the situation and leaks out of the backfield instead of doubling up on Beyer(+2, pressure +1), who powers through the TE to sack before their dudes can get downfield.

O42 1 10 Shotgun 3-wide Nickel even Run N/A Pin and pull zone Bolden 4
Lewis(+1) reads and gets into one of the pulling OL to force it inside way inside the numbers but there's no help for a bit. Entire line steps away on the snap and there is no LB response to this step so don't know what is going on. Bolden(-1) does get wiped out by a WR cracking down, ending up yards away from the tackle made by Thomas(+0.5) filling relatively quickly.
O46 2 6 Shotgun 3-wide Nickel even Pass N/A Flanker screen Hollowell Inc
WR motions to make this a trips look with Lewis in pursuit, flanker screen look, Hollowell(+1) dodges the motion WR's block effectively and threatens to shut this off for minimal yardage; ball dropped. This is hilariously called a TD before it is overturned.

O38 1 10 Shotgun 3-wide 4-3 over Pass N/A Flanker screen Wilson 2
Thoroughly dodgy by Wilson as he shoots inside of the blocker. He's got help to the inside in Lewis and threatens to give up a big gain by losing leverage but it works out okay because this is to a freshman TE and not, like, Norfleet. So he recovers. This is still bad. Wilson -1.
O40 2 8 Shotgun 3-wide 4-3 even Pass 4 TE out Bolden 6
Standard short pass. Bolden(+0.5, cover +1) there to tackle immediately.
O46 3 2 Shotgun 3-wide Nickel even Run N/A Inside zone Bolden 3
M slants to the play with Beyer flaring out; obvious result is a cutback between NT Mone and Beyer. DL stalemate; Ryan attacks to constrict, taking the TE block coming across the formation; Bolden does get there once the RB commits but not quite fast enough to prevent the first down. Push I guess; this was an opportunity to make a play that didn't get made. RPS +1.
O49 1 10 Shotgun 3-wide 4-3 over Pass 4 PA rollout comeback JClark 7
Played reasonably well with Ojemudia(+0.5) getting out to contain Hackenberg and JClark(+0.5, cover +1) in position to shove the WR as he catches; WR does a great job to get a foot in. Tough play for eh yards.

O22 1 10 Shotgun 3-wide 4-3 even Run N/A Counter power Bolden 3
Double A gap blitz gets Ryan(+1) through the line and blows up the play. RB cuts behind Ryan; initially heads towards unblocked Ross; then cuts back to the frontside, where Bolden(-1) has vacated his lane, again seemingly not trusting the rest of his D and turns a zero yard play into an okay gain. RPS +1.
O25 2 7 Shotgun 3-wide Nickel over Run N/A Counter power Clark 2
Clark(+2) evades a kickout block and comes all the way around the outside to initiate a tackle. Mone(-2) got put on the ground by a one on one block and is not there to help out once Clark initiates a tackle behind the LOS; Ryan(+1) is but gets blocked in the back without a call(Refs -2) and goes to the ground, so Clark ends up tackling the guy and the guy still gains yardage.
O27 3 5 Shotgun 3-wide 3-3-5 nickel Pass 5 Improv Lewis INT
Godin(+2) at nose; rips through as M blitzes and gets tackled for a holding call; still flushes Hack. Ojemudia(+0.5) and Beyer(+0.5) pressure(+3) him as he tries to back out and Hack throws a back foot ball late across the field. IZ with M having a safety in the box for straight up seven. Wormley(+1) drives a guard back and stands him up, giving the RB unpleasant choices. Ryan(+1) is on the backside and sees the hole develop after a play-long double on Glasgow; he goes and gets the back at the LOS.
O20 2 10 Shotgun 3-wide Nickel even Pass 4 Sack Clark 0
Hack doesn't like his first read, which may be bracketed by a safety but maybe not. Stunt gets in with Glasgow(+1, pressure +2, stunt) shooting up almost untouched until a G finally picks him up. O33 2 2 Ace twins 4-3 under Run N/A Power O Bolden 7
Relatively well played by most of the D. Ross(+1) rocks a TE back and compresses the hole. Ryan(-1) has an opportunity to hit the lead guard and remove all cracks but is uncertain and ends up getting hit instead of vice versa. He at least forces it back; Bolden(-1) got a second level block and ends up getting erased.
O40 1 10 Wildcat twin TE 4-3 under Run N/A Jet counter Ojemudia 3
OL pulls as if this is power; Belton hands off to the back next to him on the edge. LBs understandably held by the power action. Ojemudia(+0.5) is alone on the edge with the back and does force him to bend extensively to get around the edge and then chases. The delay allows Ryan and Lewis(+0.5) to converge after a meh gain.
O43 2 7 Shotgun 2TE twins 4-3 under Pass 4 Dumpoff Glasgow 5

O48 3 2 Goal line Goal line Run N/A QB sneak N/A 2
This gets a yard, and then Hackenberg is stopped, and then he continues to lurch forward on a pile of bodies. Just bad luck that he doesn't get on the ground when his momentum stops.
50 1 10 Ace 4-3 under Run N/A Pin and pull zone Charlton 1
At least I think so? A backside guard pulls out and apparently goes to pass protect like it's a rollout instead of leading. Godin(+0.5) and Glasgow(+0.5) both do well enough against single blocks to induce cutbacks behind; Charlton(+1) took a bump, got under his guy, and initiates a tackle at the LOS.
M49 2 9 I-Form Nickel over Pass 4 Dumpoff Glasgow 0
Coverage good(+1) for a beat, as Hack appears to pump a fade that IIRC Lewis is in a good spot on. Glasgow(+1, pressure +2) then loses his blocker and almost sacks; Hack stays upright. Penn State is really bad.

aw man why you gotta harsh me like that

I'm just saying don't get your hopes up. There was a play on which Penn State was running a pin and pull zone and one of their OL pulled the wrong way.

My hopes aren't up I'm just enjoying this non-loss.

All right, do that. Just don't take too much from this game. Penn State knew it couldn't protect Hackenberg, based its entire strategy around this, and still got sacked six times. So… yeah. They're not good.

Huge  bounce back from the secondary, though part of that is on the PSU OL and Hackenberg being indecisive. Indecisive is great compared to what we've seen so far. Nobody's been indecisive against Michigan all year and even if this is a broken Penn State team I didn't expect them to be quite so broken. I figured they'd complete a bunch of dinky junk. They didn't complete it well enough to hold the ball.

What happened early?

Unfortunately the torrent I got doesn't have the first three plays, one of which was the 31-yarder to kick things off. That burst outside, IIRC, and I think that was Charlton's location. A couple plays later Charlton would get edged when Michigan had the play dead to rights if he just forces it back:

Instead it's a first down, and Brennen Beyer gets a lot of playing time after.

What was with Glasgow's absence?

No idea. He didn't seem to play until the middle of the third quarter and then he was out there most of the fourth, and playing well. I could be wrong about this since Godin and Glasgow are really hard to tell apart in these jerseys, but since they play different positions it seemed straightforward to me.

Godin did pretty well for himself, BTW. It was his instant pressure up the middle that forced the critical Hackenberg interception:

Godin was also the second guy on the Hackenberg sack that ended any comeback hopes for Penn State, churning his feet like Mike Hart to work through a double team and getting penetration when the threat of a stunt leaves him singled up with an angle; his presence sets up Clark for the killshot:

He's a three tech and is unlikely to pass Henry but the last few weeks I've preferred him to Wormley, I think.

Do you think Chris Spielman enjoyed anything about this game?

Yes. Yes I do.

Spielman was probably watching some other game because he has that option but when that happened he felt the disturbance in the linebacker force and involuntarily screamed WOOOOO! I guarantee this.

Man, Ross had a game. On this second and goal he gets a route-destroying chuck on a TE:

That chuck also slows the route up enough to prevent it from damaging Michigan's coverage on the WR crossing behind; Hackenberg has nowhere to go and eats a sack almost entirely because of that play by Ross.

Here he strings out a jet sweep against a blocker basically by himself:

He had a senior Stevie Brown kind of game. Makes you wonder about the nickel focus earlier in the year and starting RJS. Michigan's coaches seem to have problems seeing who their best players are.

That Bolden number is weird. I thought he was doing well?

He was doing okay. Not so much on Saturday.

I don't like it when someone starts coming out super negative unless they get yanked, especially when they seem like a good player most of the time. So I start clipping everything defensively. I did that here. I thought Bolden had a very bad day.

Here he gets out of his lane and ends up on the ground, so Hackenberg can flip for a first down after almost getting sacked:

You want Countess to get him on the ground there but sacks often take two guys and Bolden should have been there to clean up or at least prevent Hackenberg from moving up in the pocket so easily.

Here he loses faith in the rest of the defense and hops outside to a gap that is definitely not his (watch Jeremy Clark charging down to the outside and Frank Clark rip back outside when the back threatens). He's unblocked and barely gets to touch the RB's ankle on a nice gain that should have been zero:

A similar incident happened later; Ryan burst into the backfield and forced the back away from the frontside, into an unblocked James Ross. Bolden tried to fight to an already-filled gap and when the back cut away from Ross his absence turned a 0 yard gain into 4.

Here is an ole on a tight end, which is just like…

…that's a tight end, man.

He got erased on some blocks as well, one from a wide receiver, the other an OL. I think I clipped almost everything he did wrong and very little he did right and that's not entirely fair to him but I'm defending my number here and if the above isn't convincing I don't know what to tell you. He struggled, a lot.

Here's to a bounceback next week.

How did Wilson end up negative when they completed nothing downfield?

There wasn't really much to do in the secondary so anything bad puts you down in the hole, and Wilson had a couple. He overran a  flanker screen and turning what should have been a modest gain into a first down:

I was also not a fan of Wilson's reaction to another flanker screen. It worked out because the throw was to a freshman TE instead of a Norfleet type but going to the inside of this block is asking for a big play on your face:

Elsewhere in the secondary, Countess did get beat for the touchdown but barely; if a guy has a rake at the ball and it doesn't come out that's life. He did some good things, too, shutting down a third and medium completion short of the sticks.

Heroes?

Clark, Godin, Ryan, Lewis, Taylor, Ross.

Maybe not so heroic?

Bolden, Wilson. The backup NTs were nowhere near as impactful as Glasgow.

What does it mean for Michigan State and beyond?

It means Michigan might hold up decently well before a version of last year's game reasserts itself.

As far as beyond-beyond, Lewis continues to prove himself Michigan's top corner and getting good contributions from Godin is a bonus I hope to see continue; the backup DTs do not seem ready for prime time outside of him.

As usual, loved every bit of these. I think it would be cool if you explained just how much goes into this just to put it into perspective. I tend to take it for granted.

I've been with you the whole way on the Bolden critique. It seems to me he lacks any kind of instincts. He continues to take on blocks with the wrong shoulder, often gets knocked to the ground, and has zero clue who is in his zone on pass drops.

Not sure how Wilson gets the -1 on the flanker screen he went inside on.  I thought the point of being a results based charting service was because no one knows what the coaches are telling them to do from play to play.  For all we know, the defensive coaches saw something with the way they were running those screens, and wanted him to attack inside.

What would be a reason for the coaches wanting him to attack inside? I don't know X's and O's well but one of the few things I hear all the time is not letting guys get outside, funnel things back to help. It's possible that's what they wanted him to do what he did but you should offer a reason if that's the case.

Maybe the coaches wanted Bolden to get out of his lane and get blown up on blocks. We don't know.

I think Gulogulo is right here, even if he's being an asshole, especially because safeties are the last line of defense, watch the clip again, if Wilson doesn't make the tackle, there's nobody else there.  If that's a quick and fast player, like a slot reciever, instead of a tight end, he's got a lot of yards because Wilson was in bad position.

On the DL, It's Clark/Charlton vs. the pass and Clark/Beyer vs. the run. I wouldn't play anyone else unless Clark needs a break (then Ojemudia).

IF/When Peppers gets back, I think it may be time to start seeing how Countess would look at FS.

Appreciate these URL's very much.  Long time reader.  Don't post much.  Just an observation:  I find it interesting that Beyer had two sacks and multiple pressures and yet gets the phrase solid against the run in the final tally with no mention of the pressure or sacks.  In the individual play descriptions, the pressure is mentioned over and over again.  Final tally -- completely absent.  Then it continues to get passed on that he is the run guy.  Just an encouragement to take a look at Beyer with new eyes.  I think he is underestimated here.  Or could just be my bias.

Weird rotation thing - it sounds like Glasgow was a punishment and Henry was an injury.  Pipkins remains MIA.  Glad to see Godin is at least functional.  To the guy above, I dont think Strobel has played much at all outside of Miami OH and App State, and even then not much.

I remain confused by James Ross III.  Gedeon also flashed when he played.  So let's sit him all year.

Can't take much out of PSU - in the Big 10 they might be the worse offense and that says a lot when UM and Illinois are in the conference.  Hackenberg has 2013 Devin written all over his face.  In fact that is almost the exact offense as UM had last year without 2 rocketships as WR.

PSU

  • Total offense - 92nd in country
  • FEI offense - still 92
  • S&P offense - hey! 60!

Next week - MSU's strength, protecting the passer (3 sacks all year given up) vs a mediocre pass rush all year by UM when not playing bottom of FBS or PSU.  And Tony Lippett vs probably a lot of Blake Countess.  I know we don't play man to man but I wish they'd relent and put Lewis on Lippett all game; right now he is playing like the 1st or 2nd best WR in the league - 20 yards a frigging catch.  Our rush defense should be ok vs MSU but I thought that vs Minnesota too.

As Brian said this has a feel of 2013 all over again.  Some defensive effort early to keep it close followed by a ton of 2nd and 13 and 3rd and 17 by our offense leading to doom.  What is sad is Purdue put up 31 on MSU and left the playbook on the table on how to hurt that defense.  We'll ignore it.  Or "not execute" it.

I was worried about why we have not seen much of Ross this year and thought is was  because of a 4-2-5 without him on the field. Not 100% sue htis is why but he has been one of the best LBs out there and then he's not on the field this year. The guy has speed and instinct and has shown on multiple occasions that he understands leverage.  I hope he is on the field far more because he just blows shit up. Lewis is in 100% of the time and I think Ross needs to be also.

Coaches, not just ours, have to manage the team day to day. If Glasgow didn't play as much as he has on the past, there are usually a few reasons for that: he is being punished for doing something bad, like having a bad week of practice; the guy behind him is being rewarded for doing something good, like having a great week of practice; they liked the other guy's skillset for a particular matchup, like knowing PSU was going to throw on most of their snaps and wanting a better pass rusher in there; or its a mistake. Its usually not a mistake. Even really bad coaches know who their best players are. Its not like they inherited Glasgow and don't know what he can do -- they named him opening day starter when we all thought it was Pipkins or bust.

That's your right. I don't fault you for it. They have done a bad job this season. But look at the 2010 defense. It was poor, and the coaches were poor. But they still played Roh, RVB, and Martin on the DL. They played Demens at Mike. They played Floyd and Avery at corner and Kovacs at S. Even that staff knew who their best guys were and played them at the right positions for the most part (although they abused Rod by moving him around). And look at Jack Miller. He was benches last season for playing poorly. He won the job this year for playing well. Bad coaches generally either can't teach or don't deploy their players in the optimal way. They really don't just miss spotting their best guys.

In the 2012 OSU game, Denard touched the ball a grand total of one time in the 4th quarter, and spent most of that quarter on the sidelines.  True, the nerve injury meant he couldn't play QB since he couldn't throw, but I'd say that was a case of the coaches failing to put their best guy on the field -- a guy who, in fact, had given Michigan a halftime lead earlier in that same game with a 67-yard run.

For what it's worth, though, I agree with you on Glasgow -- likely a bad week of practice or some other sort of punishment.

MichiganTeacher

I mainly agree with what you're saying, and I think Glasgow was being punished for something. Wish we knew what, but hey, fort.

I disagree with the idea that even a really bad coach knows who his best players are. Some players will be obviously better than others at their positions. But I think it's pretty common on a team to have a significant number of positions where it's not obvious who's the best. That's when a good coach is needed.

he is being punished for doing something bad, like having a bad week of practice;

This would be my suspicion - problem is, the coaches have repeatedly shown they have no idea what a good week of practice looks like.

I doubt their recognition skills for a bad one are any better.

Would that not have been due to the offenses that we faced early in the year? It has been a criticism in the past about not changing the defense to account for the rising spread offenses, and this is what we are seemingly doing about it. Perhaps going forward the 3-3-5 look could be used instead, and that could be what they were testing in this game.

I've never seen a staff make so many adjustments in personnel so regularly throughout the season. We seem to play rotating chairs at several positions each year, and I just don't understand how you'll ever have continuity if you continue this trend.

Decide who starts based on practice and ride those players 90% of the time. Thus, you rarely ever see other guys in game situations. Then you never know how good they are in actual games. Then they leave the program and play well at other schools, or just never play. Like Iverson said, we're talking about practice. I'd like to see who's better in actual games for more than one series. We will probably never see this happen though.

I know you said it's your opinion, but last year the staff probably substituted TOO much.  Every position on defense rotated like crazy--even the secondary--and the O-Line was a revolving door.  We never established a RB.  Other than DG, Gallon, and Funchess, the line-up was in a constant state of flux.

These guys aren't afraid to substitute.  You still see it on the D-Line, and some in the secondary.  They've rotated LB less this year, but that's just about it.

I understand that everyone subs on the dline but I don't think I've ever seen a staff sub LB's and DB's like Hoke and Mattison.  With the db's we're not talking about nickel and dime packages but actually pulling your starting corner or switching out who they nickel back is.  I'm guessing that maybe reason they haven't had much of a rotation at LB this year is Morgan is hurt.

I played basketball in college(small school no one has ever heard of) and I played much betterin games than practice. I practiced hard every day, but there was just something about hanged that brought my emotion out. My coaches thought I was crazed lunatic during games. My percentages were definitely higher than practice, so I understand that some people play better in games than they do in practice.

It's not apparent in this (unless I overlooked it), but I am pretty sure Countess was benched for the entire second half. Taylor and Lewis were the corners almost exclusively and Hollowell came in as the nickel. I don't think Countess took another regular snap at corner after the TD. I realize it was a great throw and a tiny window, but that was the fourth straight TD on Countess' man.

I'm glad to see Ross on the field.   Not sure why he's not getting the time, I guess that's a good thing we're that deep. Kid had 96 tackles last lear and 12 this year so far. Also like BenG he looks like a natural.

Great write up as always.  D's the only semi bright spot on this team, along with Wile's NFL level effort that helped us barely beat a bad team.

If only our offense, loaded with 4 stars, was better than a bad MAC offense...

Can't believe that in 6 years, with brutal misfires on key coordinator hires, we've been given the pleasure of witnessing Michigan's worst defenses of all time, and now it's worst offense of all time.  What a treat.

Can't wait for the house to be cleaned. And give this another try with a fresh staff, except this time, I'm hoping everyone, including the administration, pays  far closer attention to (a) whether the coach has even the slightest clue about both sides of the ball as opposed to just one, and (b) who that coach brings as the coordinator to manage that other side of the ball.

Look at how much better RichRod looks now reunited with Casteel.  You put GERG out there in Arizona with him, and he'd still be a tire fire as he was here.
