Nova boards. Dave Brandon's been talking about new scoreboards for a few months now, which is great because obviously:
That's Auburn's board. It's wicked. We haven't had a timetable on them yet, but last night Brandon addressed the assembled stadium ushers and said… 2011. Which is next year. Presumably Michigan's version wouldn't put up ads every once in while when you were looking up for a replay, too.
Brandon also mentioned another 5k seats. where is unclear. I keep pushing crazy orbital bleachers on top of the luxury boxes.
The money is made. Michigan's opening opponent this year is one of very few BCS teams to end up in the red a couple years ago:
…UConn was one of five BCS football programs that failed to make a profit during the 2008-09 academic year. UConn lost roughly $280,000 in football, according to the numbers. Only three BCS programs lost more — Syracuse, which lost $835,000, Wake Forest ($3.07 million) and Duke ($6.72 million). Rutgers, which spent $19.07 million on its football program, was the only other school to fail to make a profit, although the Big East school broke even.
So the only way to lose money is to be a basketball school with a flailing football program in a league that isn't on the end of the money hose yet (presumably Wake and Duke will get much closer to even with the ACC's new TV contract). And that doesn't take all of UConn's football revenue into account because some things are school-wide contracts that surely have their value increased by the presence of men in helmets. And UConn was profitable the three years before that. Keep that in mind the next time someone complains about all the money being thrown at football: with very few exceptions, schools in the top half of D-I have all they spend and more thrown back.
As for the rest, well… maybe the best way to force Eastern Michigan to drop its football program is to mandate balanced budgets lest scholarships be reduced by the amount you're in the red.
Recovered. The Loeffler ring saga has ended with a satisfactory conclusion from the perspective of one Scot Loeffler, but less so Arizona pawn shop owner Aaron Herdez, the guy trying to turn a profit on the thing on eBay. MVictors confirmed that police seized the ring with Herdez and got a few details on what went down:
On Loeffler: “He didn’t call it in stolen, he said he lost it and then he changed his mind.” “We don’t know what really happened.”
What is the status of the ring? “It’s not for sale and it’s already been seized [by the police]. If I want it back I’ll have to take it court.”
On how they came to own the ring: “Everything we get comes from customers that walk into the store.”
So there you go. Justice in action.
JUSTICE IN ACTION. The persnickety Indiana Excise Police continue their campaign to improve Michigan's head-to-head recruiting against Notre Dame by throwing a huge net over a house party that got out of hand and coming away with arrests for more than 20 ND athletes, including eight guys on the football team (and incoming freshman hockey player Scott Summerhays for the 10% who care about these things). Orson handles the case by channeling the ghost of Salvador Dali. Everyone's lives will go back to normal minus a couple hundred dollars starting today—not even the Matt James incident is going to result in meaningful suspensions for the Indiana equivalent of the MIP.
And now for the only reason I brought it up:

The fact is that the state of Indiana once boasted the biggest concentration of KKK members of anywhere in the country. Equally important is that the Indiana Klan focused as much or more of its hatred against Catholics. I believe that you are seeing the great grandsons of the Klansmen in action once again. Do they pull these cowardly Gestapo acts at Purdue and UI? If not, there should be a discrimination lawsuit filed with the Federal Government for this nonsense. A lawyer could certainly figure out the fine points of this better than I have stated them, but I think there is a case. Really.

The 925 APR line used to be a 60% graduation rate, but with all the exemptions it's down to about 50. This UNC thing is looking serious, and now Florida is getting some heat. Actually, yes, they do hate Catholics. Also to go along with their anti-Catholicism, they hate Blacks, Jews, Immigrants, and Communists. FWIW, I'm not saying that the delusional ND fan that wrote the original piece is in any way correct, just that the Klan do hate Catholics.
This is true, MGoAlumnus is correct. Historically, there is a lot of animus from the KKK toward the Catholic Church/ Notre Dame.
Must be exhausting to be so full of hatred. I mean, what could make someone so hateful that they would resort to burning stuff in public, make derogatory sweeping comments about people they don't know, and spend every waking moment hoping for something tragic to beset them or those/that which they love?

The Klan burned a cross in front of the Shrine of the Little Flower Catholic Church by Twelve Mile and Woordward in Royal Oak two weeks after it opened in 1925. The church was burned down a few years later. The current version of the church was built as a "cross they could not burn."
It'd be a much better story if Father Coughlin hadn't broadcast from that tower, though.

That would be the theoretical max with the additional 5,000 seats. That would probably mean at least 15 additional rows to the endzones...So, if this were to be the case it would mean that the scoreboards would have to be pushed back from their current structures to accomodate the new seating.
What I am trying to say is that we will know if there will be more seats added when the new video screens go up, or they build it all in one offseason...

I agree, especially if they just put a bunch of sofa chairs up there and some refrigerators... it'd be like watching a Cubs game at Wrigly from the back porches of surrounding apt buildings.
They should find a way to build back out over the field, sort of like successively more overhanging balconies, like a reverse of the bowl beneath it. That should really keep the noise in, plus birds eye view of the game might be cool. Just make sure there's no way to fall through.

Now that we have the boxes and they provide more shade, it's nice to not get freaking heat stroke, but for god's sake that thing shades half the playing field!

I've always thought building a couple 20+ story condo/apartments on that commerical strip of Main just north of Stadium would make a killing. Build them where they could see over the press boxes and charge outrageous prices. That, or just make all of the windows that can see the stadium into an indoor party deck that can be rented out. Put in a bar on each floor with big screens and plenty of tables so those that can't get up on the window can just watch the game on the TVs.
Getting that past the City Council and Zoning. :-)

He meant adding seats when putting in the new scoreboards. It would have to be assumed he meant AROUND the scoreboards. And yes, it makes more sense to take out the old and add the new, since the new will be bigger and couldn't fit in the present space.
And though the way Brian worded it, I take it he doesn't think so...but I'd be surprised if there isn't some video ads that aren't permanent up there as part of the package.

So if the Klan is anti-catholic as well as against Jews, blacks, etc., then what is the historical make-up of the Klan? Are they all atheists, methodists, what?
When the Klan was huge in Indiana (1920s was its national peak, and IIRC, Indiana had more members than any other state), it was as much an anti-immigrant, anti-urban organization as an anti-black one. And anti-immigrant largely meant anti-Catholic and anti-Jewish, as the immigrants they most feared were eastern and southern european. They basically saw themselves as upholding the values of small town, protestant, "old stock" American versus urban immigrants (and the height of eastern/southern european immigration was also the beginning of large scale black migration to American cities) and the elites that encouraged their migration (industrial titans, urban political machines, etc).

I live in Alpena, after seven years in school in Ann Arbor. I'm not a grandfather, but I know lots of Alpena grandfathers.
And I hate Mitch Albom.
When I was in 9th grade or so, I'd come home from school every Monday in the fall and read Mitch's THE HUDDLE column. It was good. It was funny. Barry Sanders had lifetime membership. Lou Holtz was always trying to sneak in. Albom was a good sports read.
Then TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE happened and Albom went all Oprah. Instead of doing sports, he did politics, social issues, and lots of touchy feely crap. Now his columns are just all dreck; pseudo-intellectual masturbation. And I can guarantee you that there aren't many Detroit assembly line workers or Alpena grandfathers who care about reading his stuff anymore.

Human memory is imperfect, but I thought he was saying that they would be looking at the issue of replacing the scoreboards in 2011, not making the actual replacment in that year, although the pharasing may have been a bit ambiguios. I expect that a proposal will go before the regents about the new scoreboards sometime during calander year 2011 that would detail when the project will occur and its cost. They may be working on such a proposal now. Then there would be a proposal to expand seating after that project.
The scoreboards would happen before further expansion, but not before the 2011 season begins.
There is a second meeting for ushers on Aug 7 for those that couldn't be at this one on July 17, perhaps he will restate it and another mgouser will be there.
Perhaps some clarity on this issue will be provided at the second meeting.
Having been to many Auburn games, I can confirm that their board is ridiculous. It's nice not having to squint to make out what is going on like I have to do when watching replays in the Big House. The picture on Auburn's board is clear as all get out. I will say that the way Brandon is talking about how quickly he wants to do all these things is nothing short of amazing; the sooner we can get rid of those outdated scoreboards the better.
Legal Defense Fund? Maybe they should start a BCS Defense Fund to shore up that ND defensive secondary! Am I right?
Truthfully, I'm a little surprised this became a national story, though perhaps the party was just so outrageous that it was hard to ignore. Either way, it seems pretty cut-and-dry that if you are under 21 and get caught with alcohol at a party, you might get written up for an MIP. Not saying it isn't a dumb law, but I don't see much need for a conspiracy if that is the case.
As for the new HD screen at UM, I'm cautiously optimistic that it will be a nice addition to the stadium. My only concern is that I don't want it to become an advertising monstrosity like you see at other schools (looking at you Sparty). Give me the score, down and distance, nice replays, and maybe a section with other relevant scores. But I don't need a 200-foot advertisement for Meijers or Bell Tire, even though I am a fan of both.
back in the day, cops would happily bust parties at Purdue if you were dumb enough to be around when they came. Even drunk, we knew enough not to be there.
