Oy. This showed up on the official PSU College of Engineering facebook page and is impossible to comment on without being cruel:

i never want to hear anything about arrogance from penn state fans again

So I won't. Aaaaargh yes I will. I ran an open-mic standup night* for a while, so I can say this with authority: there's but one thing sadder than arrogance from a man who only thinks he's funny.

*(into the ground.)

Scratch that. Remember "the Big Ten should nix this Indiana-in-Maryland thing"? Yeah, nevermind:

After Glass discussed the game with Lynch, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany and Penn State AD Tim Curley, the league's athletic directors voted on the game during a conference call last week. It was approved by a unanimous vote of 9-0 (Penn State and Indiana abstained).

Why on earth would anyone vying for the Big Ten title approve this sort of thing? If you think the answer is green and floppy, you win a prize:

"With our revenue sharing, the Big Ten is going to make more money off this game than they would have in Bloomington, Indiana," Glass said.

Yeah, but how much is that going to be per school? It can't be more than a couple hundred K, and is that worth it if you're sitting on top of a pile of money and laughing a la Michigan or Ohio State? I bet the only people who think so are non-revenue coaches. If this game is actually close and Penn State wins the Big Ten next year, a lot of ADs are going to look dumb.

Point maybe? Ok, ok, lulz Ohio State is pleading with their fans not to act like jerks to the Navy, but why does this courtesy only get extended to service academies? I don't mean from an OSU perspective, I mean from a larger sociological perspective. It's always bothered me when the PA announcer asks Michigan Stadium to welcome Eastern Michigan or whoever and the response is booing. Really? Really we have a big problem with Eastern Michigan, or any MAC school, or most of the Big Ten?

I'd like to save it for actual rivals and maybe teams who are particularly annoying in a certain year. (Say, Wisconsin after that whole unpunished knee-twisting incident.) It means more that way. Right now we're just misanthropes. Boooo Ben Konop booooo.

Em. Er? Would you believe this is an attempt to debunk the idea that Mark Dantonio's offense is straight outta Pangea?

Michigan State, a supposed "run-oriented offense", ran the ball 56% of all plays from scrimmage.  By way of comparison, Michigan, a "spread & shred" offense, ran 57%. … Michigan State has a greater tendency to run when tied or leading (and an incredible 87.5% tendency to run when leading by 2 or more TDs).  This is is not necessarily some devotion to neanderthal, smash-mouth football.  Rather, it shows a deliberate, low-variance, ball control strategy, used to choke the life out of the game when leading and skewing the overall run/pass balance toward run.

I don't necessarily disagree with the rest of the points in that article; I do think it talks past the issue instead of really addressing it. The comments of that post point out that MSU's run-pass split on first down was 2-1, and that was with a senior quarterback (albeit not a very good one). And since Michigan State's runs were largely ineffective—MSU was 77th in rush yardage and averaged 3.3 YPC—that set up second and third and long situations that tilted the playcalling to the pass. Meanwhile, Brian Hoyer was not good but MSU averaged 7.0 YPA, and that was considerably better on first down.

Meanwhile, Michigan averaged 3.9 YPC and—ugh—5.1 YPA. Superficially, Michigan and Michigan State had near-identical run-pass breakdowns but… yeah, that's only superficial.

I watched this for years under Lloyd Carr, who once took senior Tom Brady, Marquise Walker, and David Terrell into a BCS bowl against a vicious run defense and horrible secondary and spent the first half plowing into the line for two yards a carry. Some coaches just want to grind into the line and last year is ample evidence Dantonio is one of them.

Aaaand nightmare fuel! LSUfreek is a terrible wizard.

[note: The OZone made a copyright claim on the hilarious opening still of the freekery. So it's down.]

I made the mistake of putting this in the post a half-hour before it was ready. It's now burned into my brain. God help me.

Etc.: I'm not going to belabor this any more than I already have—immensely—but DocSat is with me on Nick Sheridan as starter. Birkett runs down the position battles.

A girl from my high school went to PSU for architectural engineering. I'm majoring in aero. In the five years it'll take her to get her BSE, I could have a MSE. I am kind of tempted to post comparison pictures, but that'd be too catty and I think we know who wins on both levels, otherwise I wouldn't have brought it up. Also, Penn State thinks we're their biggest rivals... discuss.

That's true, but normally one thinks of a rivalry as having equal sentiment on both sides. I guess the main difference is Michigan has 3 other historic rivalries on the side, so PSU's rivalry energy if you will is mostly expended on UM (maybe OSU recently), whereas we have three other big weekends on the schedule every year, so it seems like Penn State is overreacting a little with stuff like the aforementioned shirts.

No more than Illinois or Wisconsin shirts about Michigan. And I'm not totally certain it's one way. I can definitely say I get more excited for PSU games just because they are a better team. Not being from the state of Michigan and having several friends who went to PSU, I look more forward to PSU games than [TEAM REDACTED]. Will they ever replace our in-state rivalry? No. But do consider them, in my own e-pinion, to be at least a higher level rival than some of the BigTen teams we've played for decades.

Exactly, and Penn State fans are ridiculously defensive about it (and most other things as well, is there any fan base as paranoid in the Big 10), claiming that Pitt should have agreed to a 2 or 3 to 1 rotation to keep the series going. It's left them rivalry shopping, claiming rivalries with UM and OSU (and now even Iowa), claims that seem mostly to be returned with shrugs.

He killed off the Syracuse and West Va rivalries as well (They were good at one time, honest). Many here in Pa didn't want PSU in the B10 since most of their rivalries were with Big East schools. As a PSU alum, I took a lot of shit for being a Wolverine fan but I could always just mention their record against them. Still can. They never understood that to have a rivalry you have to win once in a while.

If Indiana was a better team, I would care; however, Indiana is Indiana, and Penn State was going to win anyways. I am perfectly fine with Michigan (and all other Big-10 teams for that matter) getting +200k for squat.

...this is the "official" penn state engineering facebook page? really? some quasi-representative of the school thinks they need to take potshots at the michigan college of engineering? sheesh, penn state fans' inferiority complex? yeah, i actually get that, after a few consecutive losses...i'm getting close to that with ohio state. but for the SCHOOL to have that attitude? what. the fuck. is wrong with those people? also - the boo ben konop video is funny as hell.

I realize this is the facebook world and its 2009 and all, but let's just agree to disagree that "wearing that shirt" and having someone post a pic of it on facebook puts your looks "at issue" and justifies getting posted on a well-read blog for all those to mock. Seems like fratty logic to me. On to the more important point - I reiterate my point earlier - non-UM students that blindly allege girls at UM aren't hot or, more extremely, that most girls at UM are unattractive (1) have spent very little time at UM, (2) ignore that girls are inherently less attractive bundled up under North Face parkas than they are with tans and in tank tops (that's how it is for 80% of the school year folks), and (3) are grasping for some way to knock UM. It's equally stupid.

Not to try and pick a fight, but let me say this: The internet is vast and free. Anyone can get at pretty much anything if they want to. If you put something on the internet that you don't want public, shame on you. This goes for everyone, from Michael Beasley putting a picture with weed in it on his twitter page to ugly girls wearing ironic shirts. The internet is PUBLIC. Why so many people don't understand this is beyond me.

Internet is public. Got it. I merely don't think it's necessary to post the pics which necessarily invites childish mocking. You've obliterated a strawman here - I don't think anyone disputes that putting things on the internet can lead to this sort of thing. As to your implied suggestion that BECAUSE the internet is PUBLIC, it therefore follows that one CANNOT exercise discretion in posting pics- I disagree. I think we can still exercise some discretion here. How's that confusing? And if you think Beasley, multi-million dollar athlete posting pics of weed on his account, should be treated the same as girls wearing orientation shirts in FB, then that's your prerogative. Clearly you're not alone as thedirty.com, etc., exists for the sole purpose of ripping random non-celebrities' looks. So, again, I get it - internet = free, and people therefore can rip the shit out of ugly girls. Got it. I see nothing there that contradicts my post (but maybe you're not posting in regards to my comment anyway). WolvinLA - again, fine. I don't think anyone disputes that. We undoubtedly live in an internet-fueled age of snark. And frankly, I like that. Doesn't change the fact that I think discretion can be applied in some cases. I liked it better when snark was reserved for those that deserved it - that needed to be knocked down a few pegs. If some think that wearing those shirts and having someone post them on FB is reason enough alone, sure. To me, seems like we're picking some low-hanging fruit here and it feels unnecessary. Again, I doubt these chicks think they're Heidi Klum, but sure, rah rah, they have the audacity to make a likely non-serious, general joke about UM, let's give 'em hell and all that. Whatever, I've said enough about this relatively unimportant topic.

Here's what people need to realize: It's 2009 and everyone on the planet has a digital camera, and is probably carrying it with them, whether that's an actual camera or one of their BB/iPhone. If you want to do something "witty" and you pose for a picture, expect it to go around. This isn't an Erin Andrews scenario where they were photographed against their will, they willfully (I imagine) put on the t-shirts, and intended to have their picture taken. They can get pissed at the College of Engineering for posting it on the e-web, but once it hits the net, it's fair game. If you don't want to get made fun of for being ugly, don't throw on a shirt making fun of ugly girls. Makes sense to me.

to be a part of an internet where a girl that looks like Rocky Dennis can call other girls ugly and have no fear of retribution in the comments beneath her photo.

Look, we're both Rust Belt and northern states. The deck is pretty stacked against both Michigan and Pennsylvania insofar as "how hot our women are." Plus science girls are never hot, except for the ones that go into animal related fields because they're dumb and think they get to play with kitties all day instead of being arm deep in cow.

You may disparage these young ladies appearance, you may question their judgment in regards to posting these pictures and Brian's in sharing them here...but the truth is this...how many young university age men...especially engineering students...would refuse the advances of one of these ladies?

The link to the article at the end of this post says exactly what I have been thinking about Sheridan since all of this improvement/three QB talk started. I totally agree with both Brian and Dr. Saturday on this one. Sheridan should not and can not see meaningful snaps this season. I am praying to Bo, Yost, and the other Michigan Men up in heaven to help us out in this regard.

These girls deserve the grief they get for posing so smugly with the stupid shirts, but they are only ugly in the fantasy world of the Internet. If one of them smiled at you in an actual Engineering class, you'd follow her around like a puppy.
