MAYBE

The dumbest thing in the world. We are all very fortunate that we experienced the overblown seriousness of NFL reporters for a solid month before ballghazi hit. Otherwise the sheer concentrated stupidity of it would be killing us all right now. People who have tested these things tell you that it's extremely hard to distinguish between 10 PSI and 12, and yet:

image

And that's from Peter King's site. King is the unofficial voice of the NFL, and even he's reduced to throwing a million different articles on his site about a nothing issue.

Elsewhere lunatic screechers have demanded the Pats' removal from the Super Bowl and the ejection of Bill Belichick from the Earth's gravity well. It's enough to turn yesterday's press conferences into bravura performance pieces by the Patriots even though they were the legal crap-speak version of "both teams played hard." I'm down with anyone expressing open contempt at the assembled NFL press corps.

When this happened in college football, the Pac-12 fined Lane Kiffin and we all rolled our eyes at him, then got on with our lives. The NFL has to be so damned serious about everything, though, so we get a solid week of questions like "what can you possibly say to the children about this travesty?"

And there but for the grace of Dave Brandon's uncontrollable urge to email go us.

Harbaugh in the Orange Bowl. I enjoy the bit where he tells Tyrod Taylor that he did indeed throw a spectacularly unlikely touchdown.

Interesting times in Knoxville. A day after Tennessee (and former Michigan DL coach Steve Stripling) cut loose defensive end Marques Ford for no reason whatsoever two weeks before signing day…

"It's an ugly business," LaRosa said. " … In the nasty business, they kept it sort of honest by at least saying that they had other commits and they were pulling his commitment."

…their offensive coordinator pulls up stakes and bolts for the NFL. Turnabout is fair play there. This would be going too far in penance, though:

Jones always has maintained a tight relationship with Mike DeBord, a longtime college and professional coaching veteran, whom NFL sources told VolQuest.com this week could depart an executive-level post in Michigan's athletics department for assistant coaching opportunities back in the NFL.

That would be bonkers. DeBord hasn't coached since 2012 and hasn't had a coordinator spot since 2007.

Ford immediately committed to Rutgers, FWIW.

Angelique on Drevno. Former players are fans:

"We were a team that was pretty beaten down," former Stanford offensive lineman Chris Marinelli said. "Their first order of business was getting us stronger and we pretty quickly became a pretty scary, forceful team. We mauled people. I think people (who follow Michigan) will see that pretty fast. He will get all those guys in tune very quickly. He's one of those people who gets people in line, especially the young guys in terms of breaking habits. It will be a pretty quick turnaround."

FO and SB Nation writer (and former All-Pac-12 OL) Ben Muth:

"Drevs is O-line through and through," Muth said. "He's going to impart toughness on that offensive line. Michigan's offensive line is going to be tough and play physical.

"The great thing about that staff -- they have an identity, and they're going to impart it on you. That's something we didn't have at Stanford, and when Harbaugh got there. He said, 'This is what we run, this is how run it, and other teams are going to have to adjust to us.'"

Having an identity is going to be a welcome change after years of turnover going back even to the Lloyd Carr days, when DeBord came in and went to an exclusively zone stretch system.

HAIR. Via Dr. Sap, here's Rick Leach and Kirk Gibson chatting with each other on a 1979 edition of Michigan Replay:

Another thing on Peppers to safety. Marcus Ray points out something I'd forgotten:

In fact, Ray got an early signal from Peppers in his true freshman season.
"During the season, he told me, 'Hey, I would have preferred to play safety, but I'm a team player,'" Ray recalled. "He said he made a lot of plays at safety in high school. He said he just feels more comfortable there. I think that's a great move.

He played the spot in high school. Ray also thinks he can be Michigan's best there since… 1997. But definitely no longer than that.

Etc.: Hockey scores a lot of goals. O'Bannon legal team now suing over UNC academic scandal. Dylan Larkin putting up a lot of points.

For whatever it's worth, I'd bet $1 million the new OC at Tennessee will be Zach Azzanni (their current WR coach and a long-time assistant to Jones) UNLESS he takes the head coaching job at Central, which is a possibility. Azzanni is a CMU grad and it's a logical hire for a lot of reasons -- he's still well-thought of in Mount Pleasant and he's getting interviewed today.

Which is a fair assumption, given he's a WCO guy.

Rhino = 22 personnel, X subs out, U-TE subs in

Example:

FWIW, the two other common names for this personnel group will be "U" (Bill Walsh) and "Tite" (Air Coryell, Spread, other pro-style offenses)

I have to say I have a giant man crush on Harbaugh.   I am ok with Kelly at ND, but Harbaugh man, that energy.

I like the part where he asks Luck to come back for another year, even though we all know Harbaugh also left that year.
Great stuff, love the wired up.

And I thought Ernest Shazor was better than both.  I like Marcus, but I would take quite a few strong safeties above him in the past 30 years, starting with Tripp Welborne, Shonte Peoples and Shazor.

Earnest Shazor was only elite at one component of being a safety: Knocking the shit out of people/intimidation. Things like "being in the right place" and "knowing what coverage the rest of the team is running" were not his strong suits. At all. I'd take Jordan Kovacs in college over Shazor. I realize Shazor was named to an All-American team; it was as odd then as it is now.

Great stuff from when I came into Michigan as a student.  I remember as a sophomore sitting at the stadium watching that MSU team beat us.  In those days, it had been a pretty one-sided rivalry.  So, to have the Sparties come into the Big House and take one from U-M and Bo, it was pretty shocking.

For those of you whom do not frequent KissingSuzyKolber...the fact that Peter King is the "unofficial voice of the NFL" is a huge reason the entire organization is a laughingstock. He's a joke of a joke

1. If a slightly deflated football is easier to throw and catch in cold or wet conditions, why not allow it?  Wouldn't the game be more fun to watch if the teams are able to throw and catch.

2. If playing with the same football conditions is so important, why do they allow each team to bring and use their own footballs?  Why not be llike baseball, everybody uses the same ball?

My favorite part so far is Chris Canty saying the Pats should be punished like PED users because "cheating is cheating".

Right let's do that. Suspend them for the balls being under inflated. Lets keep it going too!

Pensonal foul? SUSPENDED

Holding? SUSPENDED

Offsides? SUSPENDED

They should also go back and review tape for any missed infractions. The new NFL iron man will be anyone who can go 3 games without getting suspended.

Why in the world does anyone expect ultra-competitive people who have been take to win at all costs their entire life (because of what depended on it: popularity, college, a career, millions of dollars) to no take every advantage they can get?

-Brady, 1st half: 11/21, 95 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT, 4.52 yds/attempt

-Brady, 2nd half: 12/14, 131 yds, 2 TD, 0 INT, 9.4 yds/attempt

-Patriots 2nd half drives: TD, TD, TD, TD, punt, punt

-Luck: 12/33, 126 yds, 0 TD, 2 INT, 3.8 yds/attempt

-Maybe an underinflated ball would have been easier for L Blount to hold onto...but it wouldn't have stopped the Colts from tackling him.  He averaged 4.9/carry

'This is what we run, this is how run it, and other teams are going to have to adjust to us.'

All damn day!  This is one of the intangibles about this staff I was looking for someone to put into print.  Something that many of us wouldn't see unless its brought to our attention and, of course, with many rushing yards for a RB lucky enough to have this O-line in front of them.

I can't wait to see how things go this Fall.  Someone put me into a sleep chamber until August, please.

Ball-gate, or whatever they are calling it... has the be the dumbest MF'ing story ever on the internet.  The NFL writers, are all idiots.  Former players such as Jerry Rice and Mark Brunell are idiots with their comments.  Rosenberg is one of the biggest idiots of them all with his 2 cents that he has been weighing in on.  Seriously...it is beyond ridiculous.

Brian,

I know you are very bright, so I have to suspect you are being intentionally obtuse here.

Some NFL QBs say that the air pressure was a big, noticable difference. Others may disagree.

But no one disputes that something systematic happened only to the footballs on the Patriots sideline.

There is a big difference between irrelevant to the outcome of the game, and irrelevant. The Pats cheated, unless we can find some rogue ball boy.

And when a Super Bowl team with a history of cheating, cheats again, it is a major story.

(It doesn't change of course, that Brady is an all-time great, and that no OSU QB is qualified to be an NFL 2nd stringer, etc.)

I understand the moral stance, but geez this is sports, and I'm sorry, like it or not there is a different standard of morality at play there. Do you think baseball teams should be raked over the coals when a pitcher is found scuffing the ball or throwing a spitter? Of course not--fine them, move on, because most of this is irrelevant attampts at gaining an edge. We expect it, should not be shocked or appalled at it in the least. If a team in football or baseball can steal signs--good for them! If they are found out they should be punished. Punished by the rule, and immediately forgotten. Save the moral outrage for something that matters.

how I idolized Ricky Leach when he played at Michigan. I was a but a lad of 12 years during Rick's freshman year at U of M. So many found memories of those mid-to-late 70's Michigan teams. Thank you, Mr. Leach and all of the Michigan football players, for many wonderful experiences watching you play for the mighty Wolverines.

White-Pants

Did you notice in the highlights in Ricky'so freshman year that they wore white pants for the road uniforms.  I would like to see them wear them occasionally, like in the Thursday night opener in 2015.
