I read Brian's previous post about our defense and the discussion of what to call it. At this point concensus says that it is 3-4ish with a DE/OLB spinner whose job is similar to DE which makes the D also similar to a 4-3.
Then there is word that Stevie Brown is now working at a OLB/SS hybrid position. This position does not have a cool name, at least I haven't heard it. On other teams this position is generally called Rover.
If these positions are on the field at the same time then there are really only two true linebackers on the field: 3-down lineman and pass rushing spinner, 2 LBs, a OLB/SS rover, and the secondary of 2 CB, a FS, and a SS. So now that 3-4ish that is like a 4-3, looks to me now more that it is 3-3-5ish that is like a 4-2-5.
Finally on to my questions then, do both of these hybrid positions see the field at the exact same time? Is the rover more of a nickel situation position? Anybody at the Clinic this weekend with info on who is on the field with the 1st group?
(Please no OMG 4-2-5, 3-3-5 can not work responses, TCU was #1 in defense in the nation last year with a 4-2-5)

you can keep the same personal on the field most of the time and still switch your packages. Therefore, if my understanding is correct, if the spinner rotates to OLB, then the other hybrid player would drop back into his safety position, creating a 3-4 type'ish defense.
Also, damnit, Myron Rolle would be perfect for that rover position.
