UFR Addenda
Thinking about making this a regular feature when the inevitable corrections/comments come up on the 14k (this week) words put into UFR:
On the Savoy "drop" in the endzone. Millen's right and the ball got tipped, so I bumped that to a 2. Good if he brings it in, not a pure drop.
On Tate's interception. I doubted Greg Mathews' words here but everyone says I'm wrong in the comments, this guy most authoritatively:
Matthews made the wrong read
as a former Div I WR, I can confirm that this was on Matthews - the read was to settle in the seam - Forcier read the seam in underneath coverage and the DB running deep - there was a clear hole in the zone - Forcier read it and Matthews missed it - if he settles there, complete pass and he turns it up for a few more yards
Withdrawn. I don't have a category for "receiver runs wrong route," so I'll just redact the BR. Pretty remarkable that the huge "oh noes, freshman" screwup in the game was actually on the senior wide receiver, not the freshman.
On Cissoko. Okay, okay, I definitely shouldn't have said he's "not any good" after all of two games, especially considering the shoulder injury. That's going too far. But, man, even Rodriguez acknowledged that he had a rough day on Saturday:
Boubacar didn't have his best game, but he's a good football player, and he's a competitor, and I'm sure he'll come back and play better the next time.
So I stand by the assessment. He's unlikely to be so negative again if only because he's not going to face Michael Floyd. Can the Cissoko War in the user-generated content areas end now?
On Minor and thumping blocks. I failed to notice Brandon Minor totally burying a Notre Dame defensive end on the Odoms third down conversion:
RAGE.
On Koger and Webb. I misattributed a couple of excellent run blocks, saying they were Koger's when they were Webb's. Recalibrate your sensors on the tight ends accordingly.
On the run game. Genuinely Sarcastic has its run chart up; the right side of the line grades out very well, especially Molk and Moosman. A +4 from Huyge offsets some of his pass protection issues, which were mostly of the –1 annoyance variety instead of the –2 oh crap our QB is dead variety. Also oh snap from the GS comments:
Tate's TD run is omitted because it wasn't a designed run. That and I'm pretty sure there aren't enough plus signs in the world to accurately represent what he did to Darius Fleming.
Oh snap.
On "ability." Yes, yes:
Brian, again, it's ABILITY to destroy a planet.
Not Power.
We've been over this.
It's even written correctly right above!
I don't know which illegal, Translated-by-Taiwanese, rip-off videocassettes of the Star Wars Trilogy you've been watching, but I'm sending you a copy of Episode IV anyway (sorry -- it has the stupid Jabba scene and Greedo shooting twice. Keep your remote handy).
I'm sorry. Here' a picture of Pirate Yoda:
I assume this fixes everything. Hyyyarrr.

I think this is saying that Forcier's only interception came from him being - TOO GOOD.

BOOM MINORED!!!!
September 18th, 2009 at 11:23 AM ^
...when I saw that block on TV if it would be mentioned on the blog, Brian. Clearly, you have a lot to look at when breaking down UFR film.
Minor had several great blocks in the game. He is devastating in the backfield!
September 18th, 2009 at 1:08 PM ^
Does this make him a fullback prospect in the NFL? And if so, is that a tag that would raise or lower his draft prospects?
September 18th, 2009 at 11:19 AM ^
I hadn't realized that Odoms caught that ball despite a defender's hand being on it. So he caught both the ball and the defender's hand. Man, that is when you really want it!
September 18th, 2009 at 11:23 AM ^
I just noticed this for the first time. If you watch the video again, it actually looks like the defender was going for the interception but he pinned the ball against Odoms' chest. Then, as Odoms' hits the ground he takes the ball from the defender (which wouldn't be too hard for Odoms since it was against his chest).
In other words, if the defender wasn't going for the interception there, I think it would have been an easy break-up.

It looked to me that he was hit early and was still able to make the catch. It was a close play but the contact is definitely early and could have been flagged.
September 18th, 2009 at 11:26 AM ^
I'm no football expert, but it looks like Minor made that play possible. He knocked his guy right out of the lane that Tate threw the ball in.
September 18th, 2009 at 11:27 AM ^
Minor is one hell of a player and what a block that was. He blew that defensive end right out of the way, that is how you block and some of the lineman should watch him. That was a great catch from Odoms and I am glad he fought like hell to get it or the game would have been over. So many key factors in that game.

I haven't stopped laughing over that picture of Pirate Yoda.
I just showed it to one of my co-workers and he couldn't contain himself.

I really like the idea of the UFR Addenda
September 18th, 2009 at 11:50 AM ^
It's like a UFR of the UFR

Check out Odoms at about 1:40 in this video. He lays down a nasty one and even knocks his man over to spring Stonum. I love me some Odoms:
September 18th, 2009 at 11:38 AM ^
Between this block and the block that Odoms threw on Denard's TD, you've got to love the effort he's putting out there. Even though he's not as involved in the receiving game in the last two games, he's still making his presence known. Got to love it.
September 18th, 2009 at 12:06 PM ^
the receiver rotation means that just about everyone is getting playing time in key situations. that's going to keep guys happy and playing hard. another testament to this coaching staff.
odoms is a perfect example - last season he was a prime target, but this season he's less so, and you haven't heard a word of complaint. on the contrary, he seems to be busting his ass in other aspects of the game. like you said - gotta love it.

for Michigan football, then where is the freaking Death Star?
Ho God! It's right under our feet!
It's newly constructed Michigan Stadium!
Ahhhh! I'm about to nerd out here on Star Wars and college football at the same time! This is the greatest day of my life!

Brian, you continue to impress with your willingness to consider and incorporate constructive criticism in the pursuit of perfection on this blog. To pour so much energy into something like the UFRs, throw it out there for thousands to read and critique, and then publish the best of retorts, is highly commendable, and a testament to your character.
I deeply appreciate this blog.
Okay, enough of the sappy BS. Where is that Beveled Guilt button?
September 18th, 2009 at 11:55 AM ^
At the bar in Arlington VA I was watching this at, when Minor got his first carry I shouted "MINOR RAGE!" and some people looked over at me with understanding grins. MGoBlog represents in Virginia!
September 18th, 2009 at 1:47 PM ^
He's in Arlington, too. :)

i just got a geek boner.

I actually like the added in Jabba scene. What really riles me up is how Lucas saw it necessary to make Greedo shoot first. I liked Han Solo as the badass. Now he only kills in self-defense??
Who is this akarpo? He's put up 24 youtube clips with his analysis of Michigan's offense. I found something that I read in part 2 was a little troubling:
"Notre Dame safeties come up and lead with their head, looking for a cheap, illegal killshot on Forcier. None of these connected, thankfully, but make no mistake: they were trying to concuss Forcier."
This is in reference to the zone read play in the 1st quarter where Minor goes 7 yards before we realize that Tate has the ball, and he goes for 7-8 yards. I was very put off by how the ND defender dove head-first at Tate. That's just unacceptable. But hey, never underestimate Charlie Weis's hypocrisy.

I think that is Brian's youtube account, with the descriptions coming straight out of his UFR writeups.
Can't verify @ work atm.
EDIT: I was almost right. Brian clarified above.
September 18th, 2009 at 1:51 PM ^
Akarpo does the torrents and this year he's been kind enough to do the clips after some changes to the formatting broke the software I was using last year. The descriptions are unedited versions of UFR. I walked that concussion accusation back a bit in the final version.

His man is the nail.
September 18th, 2009 at 12:58 PM ^
Minor's starting to look like a legit pro possibility. Not that he wasn't going to get drafted, but the blocking is going to move him up if he keeps it up. He was our only good player last year. I'm glad he didn't jerk his car off a bridge after the season. Good call on the Odoms block too. I missed that. That's some good pop for a little guy.

Actually, not a Pirate Yoda fan, or a lightsaber-wielding Yoda fan. I kinda thought in the Prequels he would have been some marginalized Jedi professor who was right but nobody (except his boys Qui Gon and Obi Wan) listened to him because the Jedi were all about their power and righteousness, and that made them partially responsible for their own downfall and we'd be like "oh, damn, this universe is DEEP"
But I digress (to hyperspace).
Truly, though Pirate Yoda doesn't do it for me, recognition on the main page gets me all mooshie, and thus your second Star Wars infraction (on the same quote) is forgiven. I now imagine you probably quoted this line so often as a kid while pretending to Force-choke Big Ten refs that you simply got some childhood misquote trapped in your syntax. Happens to us all.
I wasn't kiddin about the free copy of Ep-IV though. And good news: I found one that gives you both versions, so Han still shoots first!
September 18th, 2009 at 1:20 PM ^
In an effort to one up you, there is a trilogy for $27 that includes both the HORROR of Star Wars re-releases ("it's the re-re-re-release where all the storm troopers are played by ewoks and the lightsabers have been replaced by walkie-talkies") and the theatrical versions. It's $27.
