Troy Woolfolk Is Probably Pretty Hurt Comment Count

Brian

doom Time to dig out the "just jump already" tag: this forum thread may be annoyingly phrased but does

  1. indicate Troy Woolfolk just got badly injured, possibly in a season-ending fashion
  2. come from a guy with a two year old account and a track record of dropping information people are skeptical about.

Also apparently Sam Webb has it on Scout.

Current corner depth chart:

1. JT Floyd / random freshman
2. DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

I guess Woolfolk can redshirt. So there's that.

UPDATE:

Statement from Michigan Head Coach Rich Rodriguez

Troy Woolfolk suffered a lower body injury during practice this afternoon and was transported to U-M Hospital with our team physician. We can’t comment further due to medical privacy rights.

UPDATE II: Getting reports it is a dislocated ankle, which is in all likelihood season-ending.

Warren: Well, this year sucked.

Woolfolk: Yeah, they were all like "your defensive backs suck" all fall.

Turner: And no bowl game...

Warren: I'm sooooo bored.

Woolfolk: Me too.

Mike Williams: Guys -- hey guys -- let's all do something crazy, like tell everyone we're the "World Wide Web" cause three of us have W's in our name.

Warren: Shut up, Mike.

Williams: Dude, it would be cool. World Wide Web!

Turner: That's stupid. But we could pull a prank. Like make Michigan fans think all of us are going to be gone next year.

Woolfolk: Oh yeah, how're we gonna do that?

Gordon: What's up you guys?

Williams: We're the "World Wide Web" --- get it, cause we're all W's and we cover everything

Turner: No, guys, it would be totally hilarious. Donovan: you're draft-eligible, right?

Warren: Yeah, but I'm not gonna get drafted...

Turner: Doesn't matter. You pretend like you've declared for the draft and are leaving, and then late in the summer I will act like I'm transferring.

Woolfolk: Dude, they won't buy it.

Warren: No, he's right: then what about Troy? They'll still pin all their hopes on Troy.

Turner: He's the best -- a few weeks before the season, he'll go down with a "lower body injury"

Williams: World. Wide. Web. It would be perfect.

Woolfolk: But guys, I know the fans were hard on us but do we really want to put them through that?

Turner: The fans? Dude -- we're doing to f- with UConn. By the time they see all of us taking the field the fans will be so jubilant they won't what we did!

Williams: Well what about me, guys? Are you gonna have me come up with like I can't play because I have become the Internet  or something?

Warren: No, Mike, we'll tell them you're starting.

Cam Gordon: Okay, now you're just being fucking cruel.

Well it's never more true than right now.  Reading AA.com was almost comical.  They discussed Justin Turner, Donovan Warren, Dorsey, Boubacar, Witty...I thought to myself "R U Serious?"  How can we have such bad luck?

Anyone thinking this isn't serious, just remember Mike Hart in 2008.  Once he hurt his ankle, he was a shell of himself until the bowl game.  As much as I'd like to think this isn't too bad and maybe he can come back - by all reports he's dislocated his ankle...being a cornerback that's as big as a running back...I actually hope he just redshirts now...don't even waste the year playing a few series.  Hopefully he can come back from this next year - I wish him the best.  He's got to be very upset and the rest of the TEAM needs to find some way to pick this up.

Wow...I was hoping for a nice relaxing catch-up this evening...and now another pit in my stomach...thanks angry Michigan @%@#% hating god...

Just read that he broke his fibula and dislocated his ankle.  Waiting to decide if they do surgery.  He is done for the season.  Maybe Turner will see this as a reason not to quit and start trying....doubt it!  Here's to the O averaging 45 points and the D giving up an average of 40!!  Its gonna be a hell of a year....

I'm guessing I'm going to take a lot of heat for this but here it goes...  If this was going to happen it couldn't have happened at a better time.  At least we are early in the summer practices and we have time to get the potential replacements some significant PT with the ones.  We knew that in all likelihood we were going to need to outscore the better teams in the conference to win, that has not changed.  Someone will step in and while they most likely can't replace Woolfolk by themselves the defense will find a way to do it collectively.  What choice do the have?  This team is not as bad as there record the last 2 years, if we can limit turnovers, avoid 3 and outs, and perform at a reasonable level in the red zone this team can win games.  I'm starting to sound preachy so I'm going to STFU.   Thanks... Bye...

I like the sound of all that, but it also sounds oddly familiar to them bringing their "A" game every game.  I sure as hell hope you are right!  But I do agree, at least they, as in whoever they pull off the streets to fill the spot, will have a couple of weeks to get some reps in.

Justin?  Where are you?  Hopefully you just "left" town and are hanging out in Ypsi....

Did this kid officially leave yet?  He is locked in for PT now.

This was taken from the FR*%$&P so I apologize in advance.  I figured it would be appropriate given the situation.

“I’m only listening to what the coaches told me, but they said it happened during a tackle. His foot got stuck in the turf and his ankle just turned,” Butch Woolfolk said from Sugar Land, Texas, where he lives and where Troy grew up. “It was dislocated and when they put it back in the socket, they did an X-ray and found out about the ligament (damage) and the bone broke.”

Based on Freep report... “It was dislocated and when they put it back in the socket, they did an X-ray and found out about the ligament (damage) and the bone broke.”

This is different from a 'high ankle sprain.' It's an ankle fracture and dislocation. Season-ending, probably career ending/limiting

Shame.

This injury happens a lot in soccer (as you would imagine with dudes sliding in on each other's ankles all the time), and it takes a year or so (normally) but I've seen many players come back and play at full speed and have productive careers. One that comes to mind right away is Djibril Cisse, who did this to BOTH ankles about two years apart, running full speed and planting on a surface, studs catching and dislocating the ankle and breaking the leg bone. He recovered from both and plays professionally and made a cameo at the World Cup.

So, this is a devastating injury for the team, but not having seen the extent of the injury, I have seen players come back from this and I wish Troy a speedy recovery and hope he can get back to his best next year.

As for the team, well, it is not just on the players but also on the coaches to make adjustments in the scheme to compensate for this loss. You now have a question mark on the corner and you need to find smart, efficient ways to protect that player and give them some help. Hopefully, adjustments can be made and players can rise to the occasion, pulling together to make up for the loss of a leader. I'm not going to panic, but I am devastated for all of us that one of our best players at a very thin position is no longer an option. It has been a long, long time since we've been the quality of team we think we should be; I hope that we can find a way to become that team in spite of this loss.

two things:

1. Lots of teams have injuries and yeah this isn't a spot that on paper looked like a strong position, but it gives other guys a chance to shine.

2. uh, I guess that second part of number 1 was two.

Oh damn,  I remember: Rodriguez is a pure competition coach and he has strived to build depth for just these sorts of occasions. This will be an early integrity test on the strength of what he has done at this position. I am not ready to conclude either way. We are dealing with a coach that doesn't cater to stars. Woolfolk was the projected starter by the media, but there are no spots set in stone on this team. My point is that the depth chart is fluid and we'll have to see guys play to see what we have.

August 17th, 2010 at 10:51 PM ^

Umm...

Cissoko, Warren, Dorsey, Turner, Woolfolk

I guess i understand why you're trying to be optimistic, but it's kind of hard to build depth when all of the guys you are counting on aren't available any more.

If you want to be optimistic, hope the D-Line is so f-ing amazing that the other team's quarterback won't have more than 4 seconds to find an open receiver before they're buried in the ground.

NateVolk

August 17th, 2010 at 11:02 PM ^

I think it can be even harder to build depth when these guys have to wait to play.

I don't think a defensive backfield can be as bad as what we saw last year.  I sat high up against Purdue and those guys were open immediately on every play.

I hope I am right.

This isn't about "I" or "him". It's about "we". We're going to stick together this season for the good or bad. We've got to have faith that someone will step up in Woolfolk's place. Now is not the time to fall apart.

Everyone forgets who we are.Sure its tough but we are Michigan. Are we a team or what? Sure it may be tougher but we can do it. It will bring this team even closer.  Right now UConn is the only game that matters and this injury really doesnt impact that game.

I have to admit, I'm normally pretty level-headed about Michigan, but the first word out of my mouth when I read the news was a word my mom has no idea that I know.

Well, I get home from a shitty day at work and come here to find something about the team that would make me smile....... so much for that! I'm gonna take a bottle of pain killers, wash it down with drain cleaner and take me a long, long nap! Bo must have benched the big guy upstairs for being late to practice or something..... FML

Part of me remembers 2 years ago when I shrugged off not having a proven quarterback and saying "We are Michigan.  We are conditioned well and heck Threet was relatively highly rated, etc, etc."  Losing a quality player in a spot of no depth would be devastating...BUT..

I am not so sure we will be worse in the secondary than last year.  It wasn't the corners that stood out last year.  The abysmal linebacker and safety play rarely gave the corners a chance to screw up.  Also, Woolfolk, although decent, never had a chance to settle in last year.  So,

Optimistically (conveniently ignoring snaps when D. Warren was playing):

Floyd <= last year's Woolfolk

Cullen Christian (or other fresh) >> last year Floyd

If the secondary is only as good as its weakest link, I am still feeling okay.  I realize this is perhaps a little over optimistic.

I flipped my phone open as soon as I walked out of work tonight.  As I opened it I read a text that said: WE ARE FUCKED! I knew that this meant that Michigan football got fucked in the ass once again by a bad break! This song went through my head as I drove home in sorrow...

Guys relax we still have Tuner and Dorsey......oh wait, oops.

"And Turner, now would be a good time to beg forgiveness, admit you F'd up, and ask to come back to help your team"

No now would be a good time for the coaching staff to start begging him for forgiveness. LOL

Can't we just go grab a few kids from JC?

FOR THE RECORD this is my first and probably last mgoblog post....

But yeah, I hate to be Johnny RainCloud, but seriously mgoblogers...we're fucked.  Obviously, our defense has been the question mark of this years team, especially the secondary.  But now (!),  we're so thin at the cornerback postion that opposing teams are going to look at us and say "wow, we know where to exploit these guys" (ugh,  I feel like MSU :( ).  It's not going to take a genius to know where opposing teams are going to murder us.....

SO yeah....where do we go from here? that is the question.

And yes I know mgoblogers, I don't know.  Nobody knows.  When I first read this post, I got an awfully sick feeling in my stomach (and its not because I've been drinking.  If you can't already tell...)

Hopefully someone will step up.  But who?  This predictament may very well layout the future of Michgian football as we know it.  Can fans take another mediocre season?  I mean, people were predicting 8-4/7-5.  What now? 6-6? another 5-7 season?? (gag). Someone needs to step up.  I know, one player may not hurt the whole team, but still....this injury is pretty big. season-changing big (sip).  Shit happens for a reason I guess (Looooooooooooong sip)

I'm still in for Michigan, but I'm nervous....VERY nervous.  I'm all in for Michigan and always will be.....go blue and rich rod too....

god help us

Honestly, my first thought is, "whatever."  That isn't in relation to Troy getting hurt, just to the impact on the season.  After the last two years I believe I've seen the worst, so really, bring it on.  One guy isn't going to make or break the season and the corner position already sucked on paper.  That hasn't really changed and I had already figured that freshmen would get extensive reps at the position this year, so this news doesn't really change anything.  Every team has weaknesses, some more than others, and it's how a team makes up for those weaknesses that determines what the season holds.  Let's all just let the season begin before proclaiming the season a disaster.

You know what? I'm not going to get down on this team until we see the product on the field. Anybody who thinks that this season is doomed because of one injury, screw 'em. You might be right, but until we, as in the University of Michigan, are through this year nobody knows what will become of us. This is a great opportunity for a team to rally around a fallen comrade and we are all exasperated by their premature demise. Yeah, I might be overly optmistic, but at this point, who cares?

I say Go Blue and fuck all the rest. You can be pessimistic if you want to. But I'm going in guns blazing.

Hail.
