Troy Woolfolk Is Probably Pretty Hurt Comment Count

Brian

doom Time to dig out the "just jump already" tag: this forum thread may be annoyingly phrased but does

  1. indicate Troy Woolfolk just got badly injured, possibly in a season-ending fashion
  2. come from a guy with a two year old account and a track record of dropping information people are skeptical about.

Also apparently Sam Webb has it on Scout.

Current corner depth chart:

1. JT Floyd / random freshman
2. DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

I guess Woolfolk can redshirt. So there's that.

UPDATE:

Statement from Michigan Head Coach Rich Rodriguez

Troy Woolfolk suffered a lower body injury during practice this afternoon and was transported to U-M Hospital with our team physician. We can’t comment further due to medical privacy rights.

UPDATE II: Getting reports it is a dislocated ankle, which is in all likelihood season-ending.

I knew trouble was one the way with so many folks (including me) saying that there was no way the D could actually be worse than last year.  Well, the Angry Michigan Secondary Hating God is a motherfucker.

If you could have picked ONE person on the team whose injury would be crippling to Michigan's success, it would Woolfolk.  So he got hurt.  Seems like that's the logical sequence things follow these days.

Ah well, positive thoughts.

We all know the defense was already decimated....  but in the past year now, we've lost:

1 - Cissoko to disciplinary issues

2 - Warren to the draft

3 - Dorsey to academics

4 - Turner to mediocrity/transfer

5 - Woolfolk to injury

That is 5 CBs (i.e., an entire 2 deep +1) we've lost in the past year that were either a) talented or b) should have been talented but didn't live up to potential.

Has any other CFB team had that much devastation at one single position?  This is just absolutely crazy.

Our Father, Who art in heaven

Hallowed be Thy Name;

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. Amen.

There is no universe where this is a good thing, but does this get RR a little more leniency this year? If the offense is dominating, but the defense is getting beat deep, I think David Brandon is smart enough to recognize that the universe has bent Rodriguez over a chair and violated him with a lamppost.

But, somehow, I doubt it. The fact is, most people who are alumni, boosters and other "fans" (and I use that term in its most general and generous sense) of the University of Michigan and its football team have no idea about Troy Woolfolk, ("Woolfolk? Didn't he play for Bo?") Mathlete, Misopogon, or - for that matter - MGoBlog. Worse, they couldn't care less. We're going to be hearing and reading the same shit - and probably more of it - that have driven us all crazy for two years. You know, (ALL CAPS added for effect):

"BUT THIS IS MICHIGAN!"

"THE CUPBOARD WASN'T BARE!"

And other useless, plain wrong, bullshit.

While Brandon is certainly going to understand the circumstances, the pressure on him - if the outcome of this injury is as bad as we are hoping it won't be - will be immense. Brandon isn't a weak-kneed panty waist, but when wealthy donors start making noise, it may all be "OBE": Overcome By Events.

Damn it, this really sucks.

Ok, this is getting out of hand. How many people can respond with F#$% in a given thread and not contribute any meaningful insight or comment. I get it. We're in bad shape now. Do we need 95 people to reiterate that? Unless you actually have, say, news on the issue, please don't clutter the comments with worthless dribble.

Perhaps, give us thoughts on how we overcome it. Can a frosh S switch to CB, like Vinopal? Is there precedent for any type of lower leg injury to keep a guy out an entire year? And if not, would we want to bring Woolfolk back destroying his RS but giving us the back end of the season?

Vinopal, or Carvin, or someone else, would not make our CBs better. They'll be moved there if we need the depth, but there's no way they see the field in front of Floyd, Cullen, Talbott, or Avery. I'd rather have DRob play occasionally back there, even if he is the starting QB.

Vinopal of Carvin will not move to corner IMO

Our corner depth chart now looks like this...

  1. Floyd (okay, tell me it doesn't scare the shit out of you having him listed 1st.. yeah, that's what i thought) (not because he's horrible or anything, but i'm just sayin)
  2. Christian (Freshman with promise, good cover corner, lacks top end speed, good fit for Boundary Corner, just like everyone else except Woolfolk and Rogers)
  3. Rogers (apparently fast, hopefully excellent Field Corner in waiting)
  4. Avery (Freshman with promise, very smart, hopefully incredibly fast)

The main problem is not only that we lost our best/most experienced defensive back from already the thinnest position group on the whole freaking team, but in my opinion it is that we lost our best "Field" corner. We don't just slide Floyd over to take Woolfolk's spot, Floyd's lack of speed has him pegged at the "Boundary" Corner. If Christian isn't fast enough, that puts Rogers or Avery (if they are fast enough) at Field Corner.

Is the entire season completely ruined? No.

IF he is out for the year (and we don't know that yet) or any significant amount of time, does it seriously affect our chances of having a bounce back season? Most likely.

IMO, this could potentially cost us anywhere from 1-3 games. In a season where we're expecting to win anywhere between 6 and 9 games depending on who you talk to, this is a big freaking deal.

The reason people are freaking out is because they realize this.

Also, we would be remiss if we did not admit that we are freaking out even more due to the incredible amount of things that have happened to us in the past 3 years, and at this point it has become obvious that Angre Michigan Everything Hating God is just piling on, and we don't think it's fair!

I have high hopes for CC and Avery, and whatever expanded roles they or Rogers have, we all hope they can step up to the challenge.

There is a reason that Woolfolk was the number one (possibly tied with a certain OL i refuse to name now because of karma issues) player the MGoCommunity agreed we could not lose in a thread a couple weeks ago.

So, while we should reserve judgement until official word comes down, and whatever that word is we can still have people step up and contribute to our hopeful success this year, that does not mean that we can not be incredibly freakin depressed and pissed off and feeling generally cheated right now.

So, in closing....

F. U. C. K.

Edit - I forgot Talbott. Not sure on his potential speed or cover skills, but throw him in the mix with the rest who could potentially be serviceable boundary corners and are somewhat scary options at field corner, IMO

At first it's like shiiiiit!!...but then realized right before i started to drink my life away, I feel this will be ok, even though this is the one thing that probably couldn't of happen.  I really believe the team will come together even stronger now.  I just do.

from @chengelis:

RR per UM statement: "Troy Woolfolk suffered a lower body injury during practice this afternoon..." taken to UM hospital

And there is your confirmation.  Serious enough for the hospital.

I'd prefer not to add to the negativity, but it is completely true that we couldn't suffer a more significant injury right now.  More importantly though, I feel for the kid.  He has obviously put forth a ton of effort and leadership, and I can only hope that he'll be strong enough to make it through this and hopefully back onto the field before season's end.

From the standpoint of the team though, this is the kind of thing that can motivate a young group of guys...

I agree that everyone needs to take a deep breath and wait this out.

First of all, it might not be as bad as reported. And if it is and TW doesnt see the field this year then we have to move on.

Not to be disrespectful or negative, but my thoughts on TW before the injury were that I was really hoping he could have a bust out senior year despite a fairly mediocre career so far.

Based on experience alone, of course this is a huge loss. But the CBs were never going to be the strength of this team and in that regard not much has changed. We have three or four unproven CBs now, instead of 5.

Again, I am not trying to discredit TWolf, but this unit had to overachieve this year for our team to have success and that is still the case.

This is all part of Rodriguez's plan to totally confuse the media, opponents, and us. Woolfolk will start vs. UConn, and so will Forcier. Please be true....

True... but now we're going to need to score 50 instead of 45. The real problem doesn't come when we move Floyd to CB #1 or Christian to #2... it's when we have to put a third or fourth corner on the field. Hopefully all the bandits/spurs are more up to covering receivers than Chris Graham was.
