Hello, I'm kind of new to message boards and was wondering what definition of "troll" is pertaining to these message boards.
yes plz
defined as someone who enters sites for teams they don't like and comments in order to annoy and get a reaction from the members
"Everyone gets dumped Gabe. Let me give you some advice: a little coverup on your Adams Apple will make it appear smaller. Which will make you appear less like a transvestite."
Trolls are people who are fans of other schools who go to message boards to stir it up. Just look at the sesspool (sp?) on Mlive or Freep. Some guy named Collstatman is the largest douchebag (sp?) ever and is the quintessential (sp?) troll.

are semi-accurate. They're close, particularly when it comes to sports boards.
the_white_tiger is less accurate.
A troll is a person who posts to a message board (or newsgroup, though these are less common now) with the intention of causing arguments for their amusement. They offer provocative and often baseless comments, thus upsetting or angering the community enough to reply in anger or frustration.
The etymology is argued: some think it comes from the fishing definition of troll (aiming for nibbles), others think it comes from the troll under the bridge (an ugly creature with nothing better to do than make life difficult for others).
Trolls use a variety of different methods to troll. These are some of the more common ones:
1) Pick an idea and STICK WITH IT. No matter how baseless your argument is nor how many people disprove it with factual, accurate responses, insist you're right and accept nothing as prove to the contrary. If completely discredited and out of responses, "NO U" is acceptable.
2) Politics.
3) Religion.
4) Compare anything and everything to Nazi Germany (see also: Godwin's Law).
I offer the Encyclopedia Dramatica (one of the main authorities on trolling, lulz and everything you've ever seen on the internet) definition of troll:
"A troll, most commonly encountered on the internet, is any person who purposely causes controversy in a web community and disrupts shit for his own amusement. The term probably derives from "trolling" or "trawling", a style of fishing which involves trailing bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite. Troll is fine as a verb since trawling/trolling for comments and flames is innate troll behavior. Trolling is not to be confused with the gay slang verb "to troll", which means to trawl for anal sex, unless of course it's done by Perverted Justice.
Trolling is a kind of prank and a lost art form, full of failed attempts and people who don't even know what trolling is.
Most people think that trolling is merely someone getting in an argument, or a fight, or attacking others. However, people do this all the time on the internet when they're not trolling. Trolling that does this is obvious and usually fails. People who think everyone who disagrees with them is troll are so easily trolled that they'll fall for Concerned Mother. A skilled troll can just appear to cause no conflict and agree with people and do it in such a way to provoke everyone else into a shitstorm.
Anyone that misuses their homonyms.
"I have long thought that anyone who does not regularly - or ever - gaze up and see the wonder and glory of a dark night sky filled with countless stars loses a sense of their fundamental connectedness to the universe."
anyone who has big eyes, neon hair that sticks up, doesn't like clothing, and has a beer belly
