Draftageddon 2017: The Search for the Most Iowa Name Ever

Four_Horsemen_by_MarkWilkinson1

This is Part VIII. We are drafting Big Ten players to give you an overview of the guys and dudes around the conference. You come out of it with a four-deep preseason All-Big Ten. We come out of it knowing the names of Iowa offensive linemen.

Previously: Picks 1-10 (Hurst, Gary Speight), Picks 11-20 (Peters), Picks 21-28 (Cole), and Picks 29-40 (McCray, Mone) Picks 41-50 (Winovich), Picks 51-60 (Bredeson, Kekoa, Khaleke), Picks 61-70 (Evans, Kinnel)

We pick up our snake draft after a run on scat-backs. It’s Brian’s turn.

---------------------------

Brian: ROUND 18, PICK 3: Emmit Carpenter, K, Minnesota

jea 1726 gophers indiana state.JPG

(Pioneer Press: John Autey)

Off: QB Wilton Speight (M), RB Akrum Wadley (IA), RB LJ Scott(MSU), TE Troy Fumagalli(UW), WR Malik Turner(ILL), WR Kekoa Crawford(M), OT Mason Cole(M), G Michael Deiter(UW), C James Daniels (IA).

Def: NT Stephen Richardson (Minn), DT Mo Hurst(M), DE Anthony Nelson(IA), DE Jesse Aniebonam(MD), ILB Josey Jewell(IA), ILB TJ Edwards(UW), CB Grant Haley(PSU), S Josh Kalu (Neb)

ST: K Emmit Carpenter(MN)

Carpenter was 22 of 24 last year and hit some dang bombs. He was 10/10 on 40+ yard field goals, hit both of his attempts from 50+, won the Big Ten kicker of the year award, and finished 9th nationally in FEI's Field Goal Efficiency metric. (This is nominally a team stat, but come on.) PSU's Tyler Davis had an identical hit rate last year but finished just 27th because he wasn't hitting some dang bombs.

He also had an impressive 50% touchback rate and help limit Minnesota KO returns to under 19 yards a pop, second best in the league. I bet he can punt, too!

---------------------------

Ace: Let the special teams shenanigans commence.

Brian: It's not  shenanigan to take a kicker to be a kicker

Ace: You’re foreshadowing the shenanigans, Brian.

Brian: Blame Bryan.

BiSB:I drafted a QB to be a QB. Speaking of which... Conor Sheehy and Clayton Thorson

Ace: Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.

---------------------------

[Hit THE JUMP for the Clayton Thorson decision tree chart]

BiSB: ROUND 18, PICK 4: Conor Sheehy, DT (Wisconsin)

image

[Patrick Barron]

Off: QB Brandon Peters (UM), RB Saquon Barkley (PSU), RB Ty Johnson (MD), WR DJ Moore (MD), TE/WR Mike Gesicki (PSU), G/C Billy Price (OSU); G/T Beau Benzschawel (UW), G/T Ryan Bates (PSU), G/T Ben Bredeson (UM)

Def: NT Bryan Mone (UM); DT Conor Sheehy (UW), DE Tyquan Lewis (OSU), DE Chase Winovich (UM), LB Tegray Scales (IU), LB Jason Cabinda (PSU) CB Rashard Fant (IU), S Godwin Igwebuike (NW), S D’Cota Dixon (UW)

Sheehy is a gritty, heady grinder with a high football IQ. A student of the game. Brings a real workmanlike attitude to the game. He’s scrappy and has a real high motor. Deceptively athletic, but still fundamentally sound. Real coachable kid. A thicker Wes Welker, if you will.

Yeah, Conor Sheehy isn’t flashy, but he is a reliable plugger on either the interior or at 3-4 DE. He isn’t much of a penetrator, but he can stand up surprisingly well to double-teams given that he’s only 290 pounds. His stats aren’t terribly impressive because Wisconsin asks him to be a blocker magnet. Wisconsin’s linebackers get a lot of credit (and rightly so), but part of that is Sheehy’s ability to keep them clean.

---------------------------

BiSB: ROUND 19, PICK 1: Clayton Thorson, QB (Northwestern)

Off: QB Brandon Peters (UM), QB Clayton Thorson (NW), RB Saquon Barkley (PSU), RB Ty Johnson (MD), WR DJ Moore (MD), TE/WR Mike Gesicki (PSU), G/C Billy Price (OSU); G/T Beau Benzschawel (UW), G/T Ryan Bates (PSU), G/T Ben Bredeson (UM)

Def: NT Bryan Mone (UM); DT Conor Sheehy (UW), DE Tyquan Lewis (OSU), DE Chase Winovich (UM), LB Tegray Scales (IU), LB Jason Cabinda (PSU) CB Rashard Fant (IU), S Godwin Igwebuike (NW), S D’Cota Dixon (UW)

It’s true that there is a significant gap between the top three quarterbacks and everyone else. But Clayton Thorson is the shallow water before the continental shelf. A 58.6% completion rate, 6.7 YPA, 22 TDs/9 INTs, and 7 wins ain’t world-beating… but in the land of the blind men, the one-eyed man gets plenty of reps with the 1’s. Yes, I picked Brandon Peters earlier. But I did so because I believe Michigan’s quarterback will be a top-3 QB in the league, and I do not believe the same about Thorson. Basically, it was Pascal’s Wager, but with higher stakes.

There is, however reason to believe Thorson could be a pretty decent quarterback. His 2016 season was *much* better than his 2015 season, and his completion percentage, TD/INT ratio, and passer rating all improved this year after Northwestern entered conference play. If he continues on a similar trajectory, 3rd team all-Big Ten (either media or coaches, but not both) isn’t outlandish.

Seven quarterbacks went off the board last year in Draftageddon. Given that I needed an actual starter, I wasn’t going to wait around for the guy who is worse than at least two of Thorson, David Blough, Brian Lewerke, Alex Hornibrook, and Tanner Lee. And given Barrett’s regression and Speight’s less-than-ironclad grip on his starting job, I’m surprised these guys let me have Thorson this cheaply.

---------------------------

Seth: You get a major discount if your Clayton Thorson comes without an Austin Carr.

image

Ace: Sheehy's a nice pickup. Played a lot of 3-4 nose despite being about 60 pounds undersized for that a couple seasons ago and held up quite well.

Seth: Yeah he has been hanging out at the top of my spreadsheet because I gave him a 4.5*. Has there ever been a position group deeper in the conference than DE this year?

Ace: The combination of depth and top-end talent is really something.

---------------------------

Brian: ROUND 19, PICK 2: Chris Worley, LB, OSU

image

[Barron]

Off: QB Wilton Speight (M), RB Akrum Wadley (IA), RB LJ Scott(MSU), TE Troy Fumagalli(UW), WR Malik Turner(ILL), WR Kekoa Crawford(M), OT Mason Cole(M), G Michael Deiter(UW), C James Daniels (IA).

Def: NT Stephen Richardson (Minn), DT Mo Hurst(M), DE Anthony Nelson(IA), DE Jesse Aniebonam(MD) OLB Chris Worley(OSU), ILB Josey Jewell(IA), ILB TJ Edwards(UW), CB Grant Haley(PSU), S Josh Kalu (Neb)

ST: K Emmitt Carpenter(MN)

With the dearth of DBs in the league this year I'm packing out my linebackers with killer cover guys, and Worley's #3. He was nominally a linebacker last year but pass rush opportunities were outnumbered about 10 to 1 by coverage instances. He was an excellent run defender and good in coverage, and such a spacebacker type that PFF tended to call him a slot corner last year.

He's moving to MLB for OSU this year, which is either brilliant or idiotic since he's listed at 230. I'll keep him in the spacebacker spot he performed in a year ago. Seriously, this is all spacebackering:

It's goofy that OSU is moving him inside, but whatevs.

---------------------------

[a day passes]

Brian: tick tock

Seth: Sorry you took the next guy I was going to take and I have been too busy making you money  to figure out what the hell happened to Jermaine Carter Jr.

Brian: He was good.

Seth: He was and he wasn't.

I went through the MSU game for FFFF last year and the non-Opara DTs and Aniebonam were all leaping willy-nilly into the backfield with no regard for the OL they were releasing into the second level. This got the linebackers instant blockers in the face and got Carter hesitant or making 50/50 guesses and made for a god awful run defense.

From his coaches he fixed those exact issues just in time for the last game of the season, and had a monster game. The problem with that explanation is it was Rutgers. I believe he's good but I'm not sure it will look so as an MLB in Durkin's defense. I am sure Michigan got the better end of the Durkin for Brown deal.

Alex: Brown is an upgrade but Durkin has been good so far for Maryland imo. So really all parties should be happy. Except for Boston College, I guess.

BiSB: They got AJ Dillon as the player to be named later.

---------------------------

Seth: Round 19, Pick 3: Jermaine Carter Jr., LB, Maryland

Previously: 2016 Rnd 14 (Brian)

Off: QB JT Barrett (OSU), RB Chris Evans (UM), WR Nick Westbrook (IU), WR Rashad Still (MN), OG Sean Welsh (IA), LT Tariq Cole (RU), RT Ike Boettger (IA), OG Tanner Farmer (NE)

Def: NT Robert Landers (OSU), DT Kingsley Opara (MD), SDE Nick Bosa (OSU), WDE Jalyn Holmes (OSU), MLB Jack Cichy (UW), WLB Jermaine Carter Jr. (MD), VIPER!!! Khaleke Hudson (UM), S Tyree Kinnel (UM), S Kyle Quiero (NW), CB Denzel Ward, CB Manny Rugamba

The chat above and the ridiculous linebacker depth in the conference mean this could be dumb, or I could have a first day NFL draft pick in round 19. I'm leaning toward the latter because this guy was a +20 overall and a top-10 coverage LB as a sophomore. Brian a year ago:

Carter didn't have a lot of help last year but produced in a major way all the same, with 102 tackles and 14 TFLs as a sophomore. He was immense in Maryland's biggest games, notching a +6.4 from PFF against Michigan and a +2.5 against OSU. PFF named him a second team all Big Ten player and the third best returning ILB in the country.

By “step-back season” we're still talking about 106 tackles, 9 TFLs, 6 sacks, 4 PBUs, a pick-six, HM all-conference, and an 82.0 overall grade to PFF. I like him way more at Will than Mike.

Ace: ROUND 19, PICK 4: Parris Campbell, SLOT/KR, Ohio State

image

via 11 Warriors

Off: QB Trace McSorley (PSU), RB Justin Jackson (NW), RB Lorenzo Harrison (MD), WR Simmie Cobbs (IU), WR Jazz Peavy (UW), SLOT Parris Campbell (OSU), TE Ian Bunting (M), OT Jamarco Jones (OSU), OT/OG Brendan Mahon (PSU), OT/OG Damian Prince (MD), G/C Brian Allen (MSU)

Def: DE Rashan Gary (M), DE Sam Hubbard (OSU), DT Dre’Mont Jones (OSU), LB Mike McCray (M), LB Jerome Baker (OSU), CB Christian Campbell, S Marcus Allen (PSU), S Jonathan Crawford (IU)

ST: KR Parris Campbell (OSU)

Let’s take a look back at last year’s Draftageddon, when I picked Ohio State’s projected starting H-back with the 48th overall selection, one spot after John O’Korn went off the board:

35379287633_a3995f1577_b

Curtis Samuel, of course, was a whole lot more than just hat last season. While Parris Campbell hasn’t performed on Samuel’s level, there’s reason to believe he could have a huge year. Campbell, a high school running back, played out of position as an outside receiver last year. While he didn’t stand out as a pass-catcher, he had the 11th-best kickoff return average in the country, and he was an end-around threat with 54 yards and a score on only four carries. His blocking also stood out:

JT Barrett has to throw to someone this year. OSU’s top three receivers are gone and Buckeye outlets have consistently talked up Campbell as one of their top offensive options this year, with 11W even naming him the team’s most explosive player. He’s going to get first crack at playing the featured skill position in Urban Meyer’s offense. That’s worth a 19th-round flyer in a bad year for Big Ten receivers.

---------------------------

Ace: I’m happy to list more players that went before Curtis Samuel last year if y’all would like.

BiSB: Campbell is probably a good pickup this late. Two concerns: first he hasn't really done much yet; he only averaged 4.7 yards per target last year, and only 9.3 yards per catch with a long of 16 on 13 catches. He was more effective on his four carries, but that is complicated by the second issue: Demario McCall. McCall carried the ball 49 times at 5.5 yards per carry, and averaged 16.8 yards per target.  There's a good chance McCall eats up a lot of the non-Weber touches.

Ace: Yeah, that’s why I didn’t jump on Campbell earlier. I’d be worried if McCall had practiced at H-back, but so far he’s only taken reps as the backup RB.

There’s a lot of carries to go around in that offense, and if Campbell’s the primary guy in the slot he’s guaranteed a certain number of them.

BiSB: About that...

Ohio State football notebook: McCall expects to move to hybrid by fall

Demario McCall has been practicing exclusively at running back as a backup to returning starter Mike Weber in Ohio State’s spring drills this month, but McCall believes a slide to hybrid back is coming in the fall. With highly productive hybrid back Curtis Samuel headed to the NFL, most observers expected the speedy McCall to be in that slot from the start this month. “Probably in fall camp they’ll move me out to the slot, get me more reps in the slot,” McCall said.

Ace: That still means he hasn’t repped there yet.

BiSB: There are a lot of touches, but as we've discussed re: Barrett, a lot of them haven't gone terribly far.

Seth: FWIW when I asked Fulton about it during HTTV editing he said he likes McCall in that race, and K.J. Hill going to get a ton of snaps there because he can stretch the defense deep. The old OC liked Campbell because he's a great blocker.

Parris did make PFF's 2nd team All-B1G last year, though as a returner; he was a -3.2 in the passing game.

BiSB: Again, I think Campbell has a pretty productive year. But it could be 1200 total yards, or it could be 400. We also don't know what Kevin Wilson is going to want to do. There's just a bunch of unknowns.

Ace: Meyer isn’t going to change the staple position of his offense for Wilson.

Seth: Wilson uses slots similarly to Meyer. We all agree Campbell's probably pretty good. My thinking though is you're looking at more of a 2015 situation where there's a Jalin Marshall and a Curtis Samuel and a Braxton Miller and a Dontre Wilson and nobody gets enough touches to register. Course I said that last year.

Ace: Yeah, we’ll see. They might need Hill on the outside, at least.

---------------------------

Ace: ROUND 20, PICK 1: Boone Myers, OT/OG, Iowa

image

[Troy Bannding]

Off: QB Trace McSorley (PSU), RB Justin Jackson (NW), RB Lorenzo Harrison (MD), WR Simmie Cobbs (IU), WR Jazz Peavy (UW), SLOT Parris Campbell (OSU), TE Ian Bunting (M), OT Jamarco Jones (OSU), OT/OG Brendan Mahon (PSU), OT/OG Damian Prince (MD), OT/OG Boone Myers (IA), G/C Brian Allen (MSU)

Def: DE Rashan Gary (M), DE Sam Hubbard (OSU), DT Dre’Mont Jones (OSU), LB Mike McCray (M), LB Jerome Baker (OSU), CB Christian Campbell, S Marcus Allen (PSU), S Jonathan Crawford (IU)

As we’ve clearly established by now, there aren’t many good, proven, tackle-shaped tackles in the league this year, which means that many of the league’s best interior linemen have been bumped out to OT if they can hack it in pass protection (see: Cole, Mason).

Myers, a former walk-on, started ten games at left tackle as a redshirt sophomore, then got off to a strong start for Iowa at left guard last year, starting the first five games there and making PFF’s national team of the week in the fourth. He moved back to left tackle after Cole Croston struggled mightily to protect the passer, started seven games there, and didn’t let opponents get to the quarterback:

He now heads into the season as the starting left tackle on one of the best lines in the conference. Much like actual football coaches, I’d rather slide tackles inside than kick guards out to the edge; between Myers, Mahon, and Prince, I’ve got three cracks at a solid tackle, and the other two will be good fits at guard. Myers is a good bet—if Iowa were to move one of their starting tackles to guard, it sounds like it’d be Ike Boettger, who Seth picked ten rounds ago.

---------------------------

BiSB: Is there a more Iowa name than Boone Myers?

Brian: Boone Ferentz is all i got.

BiSB: Maybe Boone Myers, Jr.

Seth: They had a punter named Connor Kornbrath. That checks boxes for last names as first names, corn, Korn, brah, cleanliness, and punter.

Brian: There was that Miami DB named Corn Elder. Although that's more of a creepy small town in Nebraska kind of name?

Ace: Yeah that’s the Nebraska equivalent of the town in Hot Fuzz

Seth: That would be a very good name for the Big Ten West coach of the year award.

---------------------------

Seth: Round 20, Pick 2: Brandon Knight, OT, Indiana

Off: QB JT Barrett (OSU), RB Chris Evans (UM), WR Nick Westbrook (IU), WR Rashad Still (MN), OC Sean Welsh (IA), LT Tariq Cole (RU), LG Ike Boettger (IA), RG Tanner Farmer (NE), RT Brandon Knight (IU)

Def: NT Robert Landers (OSU), DT Kingsley Opara (MD), SDE Nick Bosa (OSU), WDE Jalyn Holmes (OSU), MLB Jack Cichy (UW), WLB Jermaine Carter Jr. (MD), VIPER!!! Khaleke Hudson (UM), S Tyree Kinnel (UM), S Kyle Quiero (NW), CB Denzel Ward, CB Manny Rugamba

Ace I think you chose the wrong TE-turned-OT. You can mark the moment Indiana's offensive line fell apart last year at the moment Brandon Knight's injury occurred. That forced the Hoosiers' excellent guard Dan Feeney out to tackle, and their YPC dropped a yard while the sack rate doubled despite two of those five games being Rutgers and Purdue.

Knight is a Greg Frey special whom Wilson compared to Jason Spriggs when the current Packer went down and the true freshman had to spell him. His redshirt burned, Knight was used as an extra-OL-ish tight end just long enough for this delightful thing to happen:

IU's first drive against Ohio State is Knight last year in a nutshell. He's agile enough to ward off THOSE pass rushers, played well in space when they pulled him, and then near the goal line he just got rocked backwards because he was 278. Now closer to 300 that probably won't happen as much.

---------------------------

Ace: I chose the established guy on the better line versus the developmental guy who could only be effective in one phase last year and now goes from a Kevin Wilson offense to a Mike DeBord offense.

I’ll live with that.

Seth: I think you’re confusing DeBord with Borges. The former was a good line coach who thought that was all there was to offense. And lest we forget the Frey tackles were never the problem with the Borges offenses.

---------------------------

Brian: ROUND 20, PICK 3: Janarion Grant, WR, Rutgers

Previously: 2016 Rnd 21 (Adam)

Off: QB Wilton Speight (M), RB Akrum Wadley (IA), RB LJ Scott(MSU), TE Troy Fumagalli(UW), WR Malik Turner(ILL), WR Kekoa Crawford(M), WR Janarion Grant(RU), OT Mason Cole(M), G Michael Deiter(UW), C James Daniels (IA).

Def: NT Stephen Richardson (Minn), DT Mo Hurst(M), DE Anthony Nelson(IA), DE Jesse Aniebonam(MD) OLB Chris Worley(OSU), ILB Josey Jewell(IA), ILB TJ Edwards(UW), CB Grant Haley(PSU), S Josh Kalu (Neb)

ST: K Emmitt Carpenter(MN), KR/PR Grant

Hey, remember this guy?

Grant has eight return touchdowns in his career already and was on the verge of a bust-out senior season-insofar as that was possible catching passes from the Rutgers quarterback-like substances--when he broke his ankle in game four last year. He only averages ten yards a catch because he plays for Rutgers and Rutgers only throws the ball within four yards of the line of scrimmage. Also, good god y'all:

Grant was third on Rutgers in total offense last season despite missing the final eight games of the season.

He's a shifty shifty gentleman who should get a ton of targets in the slot and chip in a few more return touchdowns. Just one will give him the all-time NCAA record. Rutgers recently declared him "100% healthy," so he's got that going for him too. Mel Kiper thought he was draftable in the 5th to 7th round based on his return ability alone.

---------------------------

Seth: I'd RUTGER you if I wasn't planning on taking him soon too. In the process I encountered the most adorable NJ.com article ever:

Is Rutgers' Janarion Grant the best all-purpose player in the country? 1 vote for yes

Janarion Grant is closing in on Rutgers' record for career all-purpose yardage, but he might already be the No. 1 threat in the nation in 2017

I'm 80% sure NJ.com is just trolling Rutgers fans.

BiSB: Grant might be pretty good, or he might be fantastic. But there's a good chance we will never know for sure. Because he plays wide receiver in this offense:

I don't know if this is a point for or against this pick, other than to say that anything he does should be taken with greater-than-usual appreciation.

Brian: They'll probably wander vaguely in the direction of competence this year. If only because once you're at the south pole all directions are north.

BiSB: /Rutgers falls off the bottom of the Earth

Seth: As promised:

BiSB: ROUND 20, PICK 4: Derrick Tindal, CB (Wisconsin)

image

[Eric Upchurch]

Off: QB Brandon Peters (UM), QB Clayton Thorson (NW), RB Saquon Barkley (PSU), RB Ty Johnson (MD), WR DJ Moore (MD), TE/WR Mike Gesicki (PSU), G/C Billy Price (OSU); G/T Beau Benzschawel (UW), G/T Ryan Bates (PSU), G/T Ben Bredeson (UM)

Def: NT Bryan Mone (UM); DT Conor Sheehy (UW), DE Tyquan Lewis (OSU), DE Chase Winovich (UM), LB Tegray Scales (IU), LB Jason Cabinda (PSU) CB Rashard Fant (IU), CB Derrick Tindal (UW), S Godwin Igwebuike (NW), S D’Cota Dixon (UW)

Wisconsin was the #12 defense in the country in passing S&P+ defense last year, and Tindal was a big part of that. Counting stats can be a mixed bag for corners, but Tindal had 11 PBUs (3rd among returning B1G DBs) and 3 picks. He had solid outings against Nebraska and LSU, and with Sojourn  Shelton departing, Tindal will step in as the #1 corner for Bucky.

Tindal is mostly a cover corner who excels in man press coverage. He recovers well and stays in the receiver's hip pocket in a fashion that reminds one of a poor man's Jourdan Lewis. He also exhibits solid Shoryuken trail technique. He's a decent and willing tackler, though not a real force in run support. Overall he's a solid all-around corner who shouldn't accidentally light too much stuff on fire.

First off, solid Wag the Dog move by putting up a Draftageddon post after yesterday's twitter-quip kerfuffle.  This will redirect the angry hordes, and I applaud you for such redirection.

Two other things.  The box score from Rutgers reminded me of how fun it was watching that game, hoping that we could somehow keep them from getting a single first down.  It did not come true, but ... so close.

Finally, is Conor Sheehy the sort of kid that BiSB would like to have dating his daughter, assuming similar ages?

Mike Weber but he has zero business of not getting drafted. NFL scouts are high on Weber and think he's the 4th best RB in the conference behind Barkley, Wadley and Scott. They love his size, blocking ability and ability to gain extra yards after contact. They think he's a day 2 pick if he can improve this season.

Merriam-Webster definition of Armegeddon: "a usually vast decisive conflict or confrontation."   Added to this is usually the descriptor, "Between the forces of good and evil."

Would the analogy to Draftegeddon at mgoblog be a totally vast decisive conflict between the forces of good (the readers) and evil (the proprietors.)

Or is the analogy to the torture inflicted by the forces of evil (proprietors) on unsuspecting forces of good, ie., on your readership?

I note with pain that a total of 80 players have been "drafted," meaning the four "teams" are at least a couple short of a full complement. I am hoping that this means there will only be one more round of "Draftegeddon" this year.

One other observation/query. IIRC, one of the criticisms of MSM is that they continue to do things that are irrelevant and of no interest to readers. Pray tell, how is Draftegeddon different?

Srsly it isn't hard to get.  I like it, but I also like college football...a lot.  This is a great venture into the vastness that is college football, learning about all of the competition and many, many players playing on Saturdays (and Thursdays).  It's fun.   This is what MSM SHOULD be doing. stuff of substance.

Whereas Draftageddon relentlessly lingers on and on and on.

How about Draftapalooza? Draft o Gauntlet? Draftathon? Draftinfinity? Draftadnauseum?

Just kidding, all the posts are great reading!
