Boy I'm glad that my parents don't have the Big Ten network at their house, as I watched the OU-Texas game instead. 2011, come on down!!!
we are really, really, really bad... on both sides of the ball and this is he worst i've ever seen us. ever. regardless, go blue.
richie, please at least try feagin at qb for a couple of snaps. Its not like its gonna be any worse than it is already.
At least he'll bring a little continuity to the offense? maybe?
This team fucking blows. B-L-O-W-S. I am really starting to question the coaching staff as well. NOTHING is improving. In fact, this team is getting more and more awful by the week. I was lukewarm to the Rich Rod hire originally and I've seen NOTHING that leads me to believe he is the genius that some in our fanbase make him out to be. I've grown tired of the excuses that the RR slappies make for him and his coaching staff. There is a really strong possibility that we don't win another fucking game the rest of the way. That is unacceptable no matter how you slice it.
Jay, I understand the frustration. But realize the sample size. It is an awful loss, but give it until 5 games into next year before you can judge improvement (or lack thereof)
To be fair (and yes, there really is no excuse, you're right, but just for the sake of argument), weren't Graham and Odoms both out today? Granted, the rest of the team should be able to take care of a MAC team, but when your best defensive lineman is out and your only receiver you can count on to actually catch the ball is out, it's understandable that you may come out flat.
DWarren also did not play, I have to believe they wouldn't have basically thrown the ball at will (especially on 3rd down) like they did if Donovan had been out there. But these are all just excuses...
Ill wait for the UFR, but I actually thought Cissoko played really well, especially for a short true freshman. He looks to have gained a lot of weight since hs
This game was awful, but I don't think we can blame it on the coaches. Their game plan may have not been fantastic, but all of the problems came from execution. The pick-6, the other two interceptions, the missed field goal... Obviously these are things the coaches should be working on in practice, but there's only so much they can do.
Unacceptable, of course, but RR's fault? I don't think so.
So, someone else was calling the plays?
I always thought coaches called the plays (including the running plays with 26 defensive players in the box!)
Everyone who is so quick to bail on these kids and these coaches, after
six games, need to chill out. The fact that, relatively speaking,
Michigan Football has been an unqualified success for decades has
disguised the fact that our fanbase has as many front-runners as any
other fanbase. There are tons of people that root Michigan because
seeing their proxies succeed give them some sort of solace in life.
Seriously, if you just want to cheer a winner, go buy a Sparty hat for
this year - we'll see all the fools show back up when we're winning
9-10 games a year again.
So, Jay? Go fucking take your Michigan flag down and deck yourself out in Alabama gear, seriously. If you're ready to renounce everything, what the fuck are you cheering for? Something to make you feel better? I'm sorry that you may not be able to use your Michigan fandom to make yourself feel superior to Sparty fans this year.
I'm not arguing for the infallibility of the staff, but, my hunch is that RR, as a seriously successful D-I college coach knows more about coaching than an absurdly pessimistic message board poster with Molly Sims as his avatar.
1962, M is 2-7.
Please show me where I said I wanted to quit or renounce this football program. ANYWHERE. Go ahead. Show me. I make no apologies for the fact that I was never crazy about the Rich Rod hire to begin with. Fans aren't forced to accept a coaching staff with blind loyalty. So, basically, I'm telling you to fuck off. If you don't like the fact that people are going to call out Rich Rod for how god awful this team is playing, then I suggest that you don't read message boards.
P.S. I'm surprised that you are singling me out because of my dissatisfaction for the terrible job this coaching staff is doing when there are people on here who are giving the staff a free pass while blaming EVERYTHING on the players. I suppose its okay to throw 18-22 year old kids under the bus just to protect the manlove that some have for Rich Rod, huh?
Is that really your picture?
I should probably make other plans next Saturday.
I have to say that defense was at least OK. They couldn't seem to stop those shortish 5-10 yard throws to Moore, but other than that they only gave up 6 points.
At some level I look at today and it's like every unlikely thing that could have happened did. 101 yard interception return? How often is a pick in the endzone going to be in a spot where no one can tackle the guy? Field goal off the crossbar? Lopata missing a short one? 2 interceptions off tipped balls?
The only thing that really went our way all day was that pass interference call. If we could stop giving up points on turnovers we'd be winning these games, which is frustrating. No fumbles today, sadly we replaced them with killer interceptions...
Toledo's reaction is happiness (or, does those in AA spell it Happyness?)
I did not see the game, but I watched the ESPN gamecast animation. I noticed that Threet did not play the entire 2nd half. Was he hurt?
Elbow. I am officially concerned.
pass defense was bad again, but the defense still somehow held toledos offense to 6 points. threet was ok-ish except for the ole 100 yd INT return and the fact that he appears unable to complete a pass to mathews or stonum that is longer than 5 yds. lopota....is no longer kicking-competency lopota. i expect gingell to start kicking again vs penn state (never thought i would see that again)
Lopata missed one last week but it was over 50 yards (actually it was blocked). He missed one against Miami NTM from 41. He's made several long kicks of 47-50 yards.
This one was killer, both due to the situation and being from 26 yards, but I don't think one bad kick loses you a job that you've done very well at for over a year.
...but nothing will be. Although, the deja vu I had in the stadium during the final drive was overwhelming. I will no longer be going to any Michigan games. I'm seriously bad luck.
As we lined up for the FG, I felt we had a 0% chance of making it, only because my mind couldn't stop thnking about Corey Lynch. I guess accepting the loss 13 seconds earlier helped me get over it.
the exact same way.
Threet was out with elbow injury in 2nd half
Instead of improving as the season moves on, this team is getting worse. Who or what do you attribute this to?
How long since Michigan has lost 10 games in a season? A definite probablity this year...
Don't blame the D. They played today without two of their best players (Graham and Warren) and really only gave up 3 points. (The other FG came after an interception in our own territory.) This one is squarely on the offense. It obviously got two tough breaks with Odoms and Threet (in the second half) being out but it still should have been able to score more than this.
Yea I think matthews and odoms are the only serviceable WRs. if you look at who henne had his entire career, threet would love to have ANY of those guys to catch passes. Avant, manningham, breaston, edwards, are all playing NFL ball right now...
What is stonum doing? What is clemons doing?
Can't wait till those other slot WR/RBs come
Here are the facts. We're not a very good football because we are very young, inexperienced, and dealing with a new system. We're still better than Toledo, but every single fluke play went their way. If that pick wasn't thrown we probably win by a couple scores.
It was a very painful loss, but I've got to believe that there's a game coming our way in which we'll get some breaks. Maybe, just maybe, it'll happen in a way to get us back on track to 6-6.
Stonum can't catch balls either NOT thrown to him, or thrown 5 feet above him. Clemons just isn't that good.
I don't think it's fair to throw anyone under the bus - players or coaches. It's the sixth fucking game.
Any moderately reasonable person, 4 months ago could tell you why we're not good - no experience, freshman QB's, no depth, new system, unsuccessful recrtuiting at OL, S, and LB - EVERYONE knew this. So we're shocked we're not very good? Seriously? We need to find scapegoats now for something that was abudantly fucking clear before we played a snap? That's moronic.
Out of curiousity, when have I ever thrown a player under the bus?
So, who is "thrown under the bus" when "lack of execution" is the reason we suck??
Lack of execution is sometimes a polite way to say "lack of talent".
So, you have only 2 choices here:
"Lack of Execution"
Coaches "thrown under the bus"
Players "thrown under the bus"
I'm perfectly okay with "The other team was just better."
M is worse than an 1-4 MAC team.
Better a MAC team than a Division I-AA team when you're ranked #5 though.
I AM NOT WORTHY!
ShockFX head of sports section
Headline: Michigan loses to Toledo, 13-10. Story: Toledo was just better.
Headline: Phillies beat Dodgers, 8-5. Story: The Phillies were just better
Headline: USA wins Ryder cup over the European team. Story: The USA golfers were just better.
Think of all of the time and space that could be save, and the rest could be used for advertisements! What a money maker!
I meant as opposed to throwing players or coaches under the bus. Besides, I would settle for this sort of analysis instead of the shit ESPN puts out from people that didn't even watch the game.
Unranked Michigan has lost to Utah, ND, Illinois, barely beat Miami (NTM) and Wisconsin. Maybe we're just not a good team?
I couldn't get the thought out of my head of Brian's UFR, where he could really save himself a lot of time and agony by just posting "Toledo was just better."
There is no question this is not a good team, certainly not up to the standards of the program.
Keeping in mind that nothing that is written here affects the program in any way (as this really is an exercise in mental masturbation) why is this team performing the way they are?
- Was this team that poorly assembled by the previous staff
- Has the present coaching staff, by trying to introduce the new system, tried to fit a square peg in a round hole? Could they have better adapted a offense to the talent on hand?
- By spending time on introducing the new system, was working on fundementals short-changed (reading some of Coach Simmons posts, he seems to indicate this)
- Other reasons?
Has the present coaching staff, by trying to introduce the new system, tried to fit a square peg in a round hole? Could they have better adapted a offense to the talent on hand?
With this offensive line and QB play, there is no offensive system that would flourish. This isn't so much a "square peg/round hole" issue as a "not very talented at key positions" issue. Give RR last year's Michigan team and it would have been incredible to see.
With this offensive line and QB play, there is no offensive system that would flourish
No, but I would settle for a step or two above total suck. In the '70's and 80's, Bo loved to run the option. In '79, John Wangle replaced option QB/God Rick Leach and Bo tried to have him run the option. It failed; Bo learned and adapted during the season and Wangler didn't run one option in his senior season in '81.
I do not think Threet is a spead-option QB, and the read option is a failure. This was indicated in the spring game and is the round hole/square peg I'm referring to. Would something else have worked better - thats a judgement call. Would working with the young players on fundementals have been time better spent? Perhaps.
But one thing is clear to me. This is the worse Michigan football team for over 40 years. This has already been and is going to be a season of firsts for Michigan, and not in the good way. Like it or not, Rodrigeuz has had something to do with it and I am sure that he is not happy about it.
Youth, injuries, transfers, early entries, walk-on qbs, random fumbles, etc. We still beat Wisconsin, a win that'll look a lot more insane when Wiscy beats PSU.
Why do we need to throw anybody under the bus? These are kids who are busting their balls to try and win. Coaches who are busting their balls trying to win. Nobody wants to lose; it sucks. Growing pains hurt, but in the end we should evolve into a football giant (again).
I agree, no one is getting thrown under the bus. I think we can say that this team isn't very good without it being tantamount to throwing someone under the bus.
Someone mentioned Stonum and Clemons earlier. Well they haven't looked fantastic but as they're freshman so what? They may never be good or they may be fantastic in a couple of years. Most players don't play when they're freshman because they'd suck if they did. We can say that the team isn't great without it being some kind of attack on the players. Lots of guys on this roster are going to be awesome in a couple of years.
Over the past couple of years i have took every loss to heart. Turning my phone off and going through my saturday pissed off. The App. State game was definately the worst one. This doesn't compare to it. Did we, as fans, really expect a team FULL of freshman skill players, Except Matthews, to have a decent record this year? This team will be full of experienced Sophs. next year. Just remain optimistic guys. This is the first year I really don't know what to expect in any game. So yeah, it does suck they lost today, but I remain optimistic that this team will be really good in the following years.
Exactly - what has Michigan done that would suggest that we're "better" than Toledo this year? Wear Michigan uniforms? If, after every week, it's a storyline that "Michigan loses to unranked ______", maybe we're actually not that good?
and enjoylife, when did I mention lack of execution?
I was referring to JAYs post.
If the coaches are "not at fault"
And, what exactly does "lack of execution" mean?
It does seem like a PC correct way of "throwing the players under the bus"
enjoylife - we have an offense that, collectively, has virtually no experience, at all. We have little depth. I think we have talent, but we're not equipped to weather injuries, and our starters have, comparatively little coaching, as they are all in their first two years of eligibility. I think that about nails it.
The RUM has definitely taken affect (effect?) and the hockey games starts in 47 minutes.
See you there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do think that if Threet and Odoms can get healthy, we can start developing something more of a downfield passing game. We showed glimpses of it against Illinois, and Threet finally connected on that middle streak to Minor today. It's frustrating that, on top of all our other issues, we're having everyone get hurt at one time or another.
If anybody needs me, make sure you have plenty of booze.
PSU crushing Wiscy - they have not beaten us in 9 years - get ready for paybacks next Saturday.
Sparty is ready for revenge on us also - the following Sat will be brutal in AA based on what we've all seen so far.
We're gonna be 2-6 in a couple weeks. Then we'll see who the real M fans are. . .
we're 2-16, we will really find out who the real M fans are!!!! And when we go 2-36 will we ever, EVER really find out who the real M fans are. If we are really, REALLY lucky, we will finally approach the utter total futility of the University of Chicago of the 1930's, find out who the REAL MICHIGAN fans are and eliminate the football program. That's when we will really find out who the real UM fans are!!!!!
Next week at PSU promises to be the most ugly Michigan game in the last 78 years. But we can beat Sparty. We may suck but at the end of the day, they're still Sparty.
with a boat-load of freshmen and sophmores, Michigan has played 1 (!) road game so far... and that game, as I recall, didn't go so well. Yeah, that is one game prior to the start of the season, that I thought would be a "no chance in hell" game.
Really, the only reason I am going to watch is that I am really interested to see how the coaching staff and the underclassmen are going to face this adversity. I hope (and expect) that they will make the game competitive.
It only took them 6 weeks after the interview to finally offer me far less than I made before. (roll eyes) But I gotta take what I can get in this economy. Or maybe just high-tail it back to the Caribbean.
Yeah, get what you can at this time (which may get a little worse) and hopefully you will get bumped up in a short period. You can always continue your job search while earning some cash.
And who knows, you may even end up relocating back down to Saba!
Bleah. Patooey. Yack. ASOASF.
they suck dong. hopefully kirk herbstreit was right and we'll make it to 6-6. btw, who here blasted herbstreit for his 6-6 predeiction? the same people saying 'of course we were going to have a losing season this year'? i'm fucking hammered
I think its perfectly ok to be upset at losing to toledo, in 24 games of history with the MAC, we have found someway, somehow to win every game, no matter what the conditions may have been. This loss was devastating, and regardless of how poor we looked throughout the year, toledo was quite bad themselves.
However at the same time that doesnt mean that we don't support the team, still have faith, and continue to root and hope that things begin to click. All im trying to say is it is ok to be pissed or critical, and that doesn't make you less of a michigan fan, or supporter. I am not old enough to remember what caused or what the conditions were for our previous losing season, perhaps someone can enlighten me.
Its time to forget last game, and focus on penn state, and hope the wolverines can get something going. Although I would always like to see michigan win, and always think they have a chance at any opponent, I will be satisfied even if we lose the game as long as we have no unforced turn overs.
Could be worse. You could be a Toledo grad and live there.
We lost. It happens. USC lost to Oregon State, they probably have this exact thread on their forum too.
