Threet to Transfer -- Per Detnews.com

Apparently the rumor was true and Steven Threet is going to transfer from Michigan. In his prepared statement he indicated he did not know where he would attend school going forward.

I wish the young man the best going forward and hope that he finds a situation that serves him well.

a) Threet would have had eligibility remaining - for at least one year - after Mallett graduated/went to the NFL

b) If Forcier took over the starting job, his starting position would span the rest of Threet's career. Threet would never see the field again, barring injury to Forcier.

c) Threet transferred in to play a PRO-STYLE OFFENSE. I don't see why so many people can't grasp this idea. This offense was not made for 6'5", 230 pound quarterbacks (at least, not ones who lack Terrell Pryor's tools). It's like Oliver Miller being in a Mike D'antoni offense or TJ Ford being asked to post up or like Albert Pujols being asked to bunt for singles from the leadoff position.

Did you play any sports in high school or college? Have you ever been in competition at a position? If you have then you will know that it doesn't take practice to see how talented someone is. And it doesn't take practice to see how coaches lean towards kids. No matter what anyone says, Threet is not stupid and Tate is not bad. Threet surely can see what kind of threat Tate is by just drills.

I AM NOT SAYING TATE IS THE MAN....and I also am not saying that Threet is horrible. I am just guessing he saw something and sees what the future was shaping up to be. Plus, why did he transfer to UofM in the first place? I do like Threet, but there seems to be a pattern here.....

I will forever be greatful(or is it grateful?) for him doing his best in '09 and keeping us from going 0-12.

Yes, I played a lot of sports in high school and baseball at a high level, but that is irrelevant to this issue. Your argument avoids the reality that drills are not an absolute predictor of on field performance.

Recent examples of guys that must have been good in practice but didn't fair well in games:
2007 Stevie Brown -- Replaced after one game by Englemon (spl?)
2008 Nick Sheridan -- Replace after two 1/2 starts by Threet.

It is very different playing the game when the defense is at full speed and the QB is fair game. There are a lot of examples of QBs that were physically talented but never beat out the less gifted player: Major Applewhite at Texas, Perriloux (spl?) at LSU in 2007, pick your FSU QB (Kendra or the dual threat guy from 2-3 years ago).

I am just trying to do the human thing here and come up with a sane reason why he would leave. I don't want him to at all, but there has to be something behind the scenes that we do not know. Or does there?

You kind of furthered my argument about sports at a higher level. You know that right or wrong, guys get starts that maybe shouldn't, etc. Your point, not mine. Coaches peg guys, and maybe RR had Tate pegged in Steve's mind???? I don't know. Again, just searching.

Either way, depending on his reasons, this could be another black eye for the program. But moving forward we are finding out who wants to be there come August. And that is all that matters. Threet will always have a spot in my heart for that Wisky game and I sure hope Tate is ready to go.

he wasn't great in any sense of the word, but he did bring game experience, and was better then sheridan. We go into another football season starting a freshman that is unexperienced or sheridan. I personally believe that T Force or D Rob was going to win the job rather quickly but still Threet was big and isn't sheridan. I wish him luck and hope he makes the right decision which he didn't the first two times. Typical Adrian grad. haha

This just adds to the already immense pressure that is being put on Forcier.

He seems like a great kid with a good head on his shoulders - but he's got a lot of unfair hype to live up to as "the savior" of this football program.

Can't imagine how tough it would be for an 18 yr old kid to handle that kind of pressure - but it has it's benefits too because he probably OWNS that campus already.

Well, it looks like it'll be baptism by fire for Forcier. I hope he can handle it. I think, had Threet stayed, he would have probably started or gotten significant time over the first half of the season, but maybe he just saw the writing on the wall (or maybe Tate really is that good (please?)). Leaving now could potentially give Steve two years at another D1 program where he would have a chance to show his skills.

Man, that kid just couldn't catch a break. He commits to G. Tech out of high school. Then Paul Johnson comes in, bringing his triple option system with him. So he transfers closer to home, to a program that has made a living off statue-esque white quarterbacks, only to have Lloyd retire and Rich Rod and the spread option come to town.

Best of luck to you, Steve, no matter where you end up or what anyone else says. You were thrust into an impossible situation this past year, and I thank you for doing what you could.

when Threet left Ga Tech, Paul Johnson was still coaching at Navy.

Chan Gailey was still coaching at GT. Threet had no idea that GT would be going through a coaching change when he left GT.

I'm replying to your post, only because I've already seen several folks get the timeline wrong and say the same thing.....i agree with your overall sentiment other than the concept of 'too bad for ST' after leaving one school for system reasons, it happens again.

On the day he left GT, you could make a case that Michigan was a lot more likely to go through a coaching change than GT was, what with it widely being rumored as Lloyd's last season. While he could not have foresaw the RR hiring, Threet was coming to a school with an expected turnover coming at the HC position. That was risky in its own right.

He always gave what he had when he was out there. I am sad to see this guy go. He would have been an asset to this team just by mere game experience alone. With that said, I do think that you have to say that some of this does have to do with the reception that Forcier has been getting on campus. Reports have been that the team has been gravitating to this guy. Hell, Greg Matthews (Steves number one target last year) calls the guy Sunshine and solicits him to throw him TD's. That probably didn't sit well with Threet. Couple that with him already running an offense that isn't suited to his strengths and it creates an atmosphere that makes Steve look at the front door like a jilted lover.

If you have to ask twice it means that you didn't get it the first time.

And, yes, I fall into fantasy land when I get bad news.

real reason why he's bailing? tom, brian??? i honestly don't think that richrod would make him the soul scape goat that it would cause him to transfer. that just doesn't sound right. why would a coach want his best returning QB to leave? and i really don't think that the fact that tate and d-rob are coming would cause him to leave either, the kid is to much of a gamer to do that.

with the recruiting of a 2010 spread stud QB (e.g. Gardner), and having 2 freshmen QBs scared the kid away or at least RR made it apparent he wanted Threet out ASAP. Who knows?

At least Tate and Robinson will get more snaps during practice now, and we don't have to mess around with "spread light".

I don't necessarily think that's an accurate comparison. That's like saying, well, Ryan Mallett hated this system, and he was a five-star QB, so playing Terrelle Pryor or Russell Shepherd is a bad idea, because they're both five-star QBs. I think Threet might have done better if he wasn't, you know, 6'5" and with a 40 time rivaling molasses. I loved Threet, and I'm upset that he's leaving, but he was not built for the spread attack; Forcier is. Doesn't mean he'll make the team a huge amount better; just that it's kind of an unfair comparison. Just like "Hey Chad Henne played as a freshman and we went to the Rose Bowl!" is kind of (a lot a lot) an unfair comparison.

Plus, Denard Robinson appears to be able to throw a spiral? Sort of?

Good luck to him... he didn't deserve the crap handed to him by a certain segment of the Michigan fan base.

I can't imagine Threet being stupid enough NOT to see the "writing on the wall."

I have said all along that he should transfer to Adrian College, where he would be immediately eligible. I had hoped he would stay a year for depth, but this will work out better as long as Forcier doesn't get hurt or Robinson is able to perform right away. I am now hoping that Gallon gets a good score on his ACT and can be the wildcat QB.

Back to Threet, I think he should transfer to Adrian and play in the MIAA because the QB position was already MIA last year, anyway. So the transition from MIA to MIAA should not be too difficult.

Sorry, Threet fans, but if he played more than one or two games this season, it would mean that UM was in serious trouble.
