I'm hoping Brian explains things a bit more about where he heard this. I agree though that, if true, Rich Rod comes off looking like an incredible douche bag and, not a very smart one, either.
Threet Rumor Logic
Rumour cant be true.
Way I see it played it.. Someone heard RR saying "Tate is one hell of a player, he could be starter". Just by that, people add there little spice to the quote. By the 5th or 6th person its "RR said Tates way better than Threet, Threets terrible"
^^^^ and thats the one that gets public.
Plus, (not quoting toward anyone or any coaches), if a coach puts in a freshmen qb over a so(rs) or any experienced QB. That means the freshmen qb is better. Let the better players play.
Lets say Threet never came to Michigan. Last yr it wud of been Cone and Sheridan. What would everyone say then? Let Sheridan play, hes experienced? NO, no matter what, you let the best players play.
If we would of landed 1-2 more top CBs in last few yrs, Morgan Trents ass would of sat.
Out of the total abortion that is everything that dude writes, you pick that one? I guess you have to start somewhere.
I know, I know. But wtf does "he would of stayed" mean? I feel like most people would look at those 4 words in a row and think, "those don't make sense together."
I believe I don't understand your comment, sir?
Also, why do I make mistakes in my grammar? Why don't I use all the appropriate words for my statements?
Its easy, I type as I think. I take a minute to type all my posts, I don't proof read, I don't look at my posts for 10-15 minutes and look for corrections. I think, i type, i make mistakes. If you had smarts and respect for other fellow fans of oyur team, you would just think negative stuff towards others in your head.
I bet your some nerd in school who never goes out and parties, never gets laid. How do I know this? You and a select few pick arguments on the INTERNET. LOL. Ever get in an argument in RL before? Prob not. Sorry, I didn't mean to make you shed a tear. I guess I didn't think before I said that. Oh well, i dont proof read, i'm not going to correct it.
That's actually exactly right.
Are you serious?....and I was just about to anoint you as the official sex god of MGoBlog. Way to ruin my evening you commi homo loving virgin.
Flame War! Wahooo!
What were we talking about again, RR? Threet?
I think it was Threet, but I think by the time I responded it was about the fact that WolvLA is still a virgin according to RRera.
Wow, the "you don't get laid" burn. This is most frequently employed by 15 year olds. Fine work.
And just because most people on here are Michigan fans doesn't mean we can't think you're in idiot.
Hey give the kid a break, I am sure his Mommy never teached him no gooder den dat. But really kid, the "never get laid" comment is really dating you as a 12 year old. Next I suppose you want to talk about the size of someone's manhood being the size of a mouse's right. Go pop a pimple and come back when your Mommy says you can.
i fink ppl lke two proof reed just so know what saying....
I can't believe I wasn't a part of this mindblowing intellectual conversation!!!!
I guess I was too busy dealing with things in RL.
(really, who even types like this?)
coachBT say threet GOOD KID, no shot as starting QB for michigan TEAM or PROGRAM.
CoachBT was the source of the rumor, but his version is more "evil".
"First off, sometime after the last game and Christmas break Steve Threet and his parents asked Coach Rod for a meeting to talk about Threet's future and the direction that Coach Rod sees for Threet.
They were told that this meeting would have to wait until after signing day??? Does this seem right? To be telling your possible starting quarterback for the 2009 season that you don't have time for him right now, because you're to busy recruiting kids that might not even come here? Basically saying that those kids are more important than giving thirty to sixty minutes to meet with your starting quarterback and his family."
coachBT trusted Rodriguez INSIDER, not RUMOR
You have some splaining tooo dooo.
The 2nd best Ricardo behind Miller...Ricky
What about Ricardo Montalban?
I'm partial to David Ricardo. Everyone remembers Adam Smith and Thomas Malthus, but Ricardo is sort of like the economist's Steven Threet--lost in the fray.
I heard that Threet is transfering to EMU, according to ESPN boards. Not very credible, but...
First, I think I was pretty accurate in recounting what Brian said on WTKA today. If I got things garbled, my apologies to MGoBLoggers.
Assuming it's true, I agree that it's easy to make RR out as the bad guy; it seems just crazy to pencil in a pure freshman as a starter, and looks a bit like he's telling Threet to buzz off after ST busted his ass all season.
What we don't know is really what RR told Threet. Was it "Threet, you really suck, and suck so badly that I'm going to start a freshman regardless of his lack of experience, so get your ass out of here," or was it "Steve, nobody has a higher regard than I for what you did for the team last year. The problem is that my offense and your skills are just a poor match. I think you know that better than anyone, and I know it's not what you signed up for when you transferred here. And it's clear to me already that Tate is far better suited to what we need to do, and for that reason he's going to get the lion's share of the snaps in spring drills. We'd love for you to stay and help the team out, but I'd be dishonest if I told you that the chances of your starting look good right now. If you'd rather transfer to another school, we will give you your release, and will help you out in any way we can."
I hope to god it was closer to the second version.
Were you the "Don" that called?
I was Brodie. I'm in Harper Woods, England.
Great question Brodie, although it would have been better if you said "thanks, I'll hang up and listen".
Is there any truth to the stereotype about English food being awful?
That's actually a complex question. I've found certain types of food (Italian, Indian) to be world's better here while others (Mexican, "American" excepting McDonalds) pale in comparison. The traditional British food (bangers, etc) is shit to the highest degree, though the pub food (fish and chips, mainly) is amazing.
And you wash it all down with something nice and lukewarm.
The only reason that Americans drink their beer cold is so they don't have to realize how bad it actually tastes. If you drink beer that doesn't taste like piss, it is better warm.
There's more alcohol in my piss than in English beer. I loved the bangers n mash and pies while there. Also experienced great Indian food.
Dude, all beer tastes like piss no mater the temperature. It's part of the charm.
Wait, Brodie, you're in England? How come you never brought is up before? [sarcasm]
I'd be shocked if any head coach would say something near the former example, even if they meant it. That would be a great way to get a lot of your players to hate you.
But you're right in that there is a difference between running a guy off, and letting him know what your plans are and that they don't include him.
it still shows very bad judgement on RR's part. With 2 freshman and one Sheridan as Qb's, why would you cut ties on (potentially, for this year anyway), your best QB?
Given that nobody truly knows what happened at this point (barring some statement from either Threet or RR), I think we should give RR the benefit of the doubt and trust that he acted in the program's best interests as he perceived them.
If he told Threet that Forcier would take most of the snaps in the spring, then RR must have had a reason for saying that. Maybe RR wanted to get Tate the first team snaps to guage his effectiveness at running the offense; after all, Threet is a known quantity.
But, in truth, we have no idea what was said or why, so I'm going to back RR until I'm proven wrong.
There is probably some truth to RR telling ST his chances of starting are slim. RR's offense is predicated on the zone read which really only works if you have a mobile QB. RR rather have a guy who can run well than throw well. Since ST really isn't good at either one, his only advantage over TF was his knowledge of the offense. Thus, ST probably asked RR whats up with his status and RR, being a straight up guy, told Steve it doesn't look good especially considereing Tate ran a spread in high school and seems to be a work horse. I think this is probably best for both schools LONG TERM. For this year, it sucks cause we have no experience at QB (save Sheridan). Next year however, we will be in a much better position with an extra scholly for another spread QB. Chalk this on up for the future guys.
"R rather have a guy who can run well than throw well. Since ST really isn't good at either one, his only advantage over TF was his knowledge of the offense."
Forcier has more knowledge of RR's offense than Threet. Forcier has run the spread far longer than Threet. RR barely opened his playbook for either Threet or Sheridan.
I wouldn't say Threet has any advantage over Forcier, other than height.
Threet ran the spread in HS. It was more of a Mike Leach spread than RR's but the base run out of it was still the read. In fact Threet ran the speed option.
......but there is an account of what RR said to Arrington, Mallet, et al and if it's true he was completely honest about what he was planning for the offense. If he'd lied I think there was a chance they would've stayed (Mallet was probably gone either way) but he did what was best for the players. Based on that I gotta think his conversation with Threet was more along the lines of Don's second option.
"I never understood why people were angry at RR for refusing to adapt to his players (other than the fact that he hinted that he would). If this team is going to be successful, RR has to run his system."
Agreed - I don't understand why people would accept that a quarterback (Mallett is who I have in mind) should definitely transfer because he's not a fit for the system, but turn around and say the coach (who's been coaching this system for 20 years) should suddenly switch gears and run an offense he's got no experience in. As disasteriffic as the offense was last season, I can't see how it'd be improved with a coach calling plays he has zero familiarity with - and worse, setting back the other 10 players on the field in their development in the new offense just for the sake of the one player who "fits a system."
As for Threet, I agree it sounds awful if RR "ran him off", i.e., informed him he wouldn't be needed any more. Far worse, of course, would be RR feeding Threet a line about everyone having an equal chance at competing, you're our guy, blah blah blah, and then turning around and that clearly not being the case at spring camp. This is the sort of thing OSU fans love to criticize RR for, but the emperor has no clothes here because they had a very similar QB situation last year.
RR was very clear that he was a practical coach who "adapted my system to the players in it. I like winning too much." I think that quote is pretty close to what he said in his opening presser. Not that he should run a new offense, because he definitely should not. But for example, (and BTW I'm not saying RR didn't adapt last year) if Threet was the better player for now anyway, couldn't the offense be adapted to more of an OK spread until the freshman emerge?
These boards are approaching halo scan bad
I really don't think RR spent last year working with this kid just to run him off. In spite of all of the things that the media has tried to use against RR, (ie; family values) he has actually done the right things. I really think that RR was thinking of the best interests of both the team and ST. If ST was pulled into the office and bashed don't you think that he would have said something about it. If he were bashed so badly that he was willing to leave the school that he grew up watching and rooting for don't you think that there would have been some kind of ill feelings displayed to the media.
As long as everyone is speculating, IF Coach R told Threet the truth - i.e., that Forcier has a very good chance of getting lots of opportunities to play, and that it would likely come at Threet's expense - then Coach is being straight up. If you start putting some things together, like Beaver, Threet, and some of the other decommitments, the picture I can't help but get is of a coach who is actually honest with people - even when it means they go somewhere else. And if people ask what their chances are for playing time, etc., and Coach is honest, then you might lose some folks. You can't have it both ways. If you want integrity, then that means some will not like the honest answers they get and they will leave (or won't come to begin with). If you want recruiting or retention at any cost, then don't chide a coach for lying. I prefer integrity and I hope that is what this is about. Living in St. Louis with Tony LaRussa, I have learned to respect his coaching ethic. He has lost lots of good players over the years (Ozzie Smith, Scott Rolen, etc.) But he is brutally honest, even if they don't like it. That is good coaching.
...with RR being honest with Threet. I am guessing that is how it happened.
If Threet was your kid, would you rather have a coach lie to him to keep him around as a third-string emergency QB or would you rather have him tell the truth?
If RR really did tell the Threets to wait until after signing day, he did them a favor. His plans for Threet would be a lot different if Robinson hadn't signed.
RR seems to be a no bullshit kind of coach. If the truth hurts sometimes, too bad. Life is full of truths that hurt. It's how we learn and grow.
As for Threet, I still don't see him being able to run an offense at a major college. I hope he proves me wrong, but I just don't see that in him at this point. He thinks too slow and his mechanics are too fucked up. His delivery reminds me of Dan Quisenberry. That does not translate to being a very good QB at the elite level.
"RR seems to be a no bullshit kind of coach. If the truth hurts sometimes, too bad. Life is full of truths that hurt. It's how we learn and grow."
+1000000000000000 and I couldn't have said it better. I do think Threet will be a good college QB though if he gets the mental part of the game down. He missed receivers, but he threw it OVER the open guy's head, not into triple coverage.
