Three Headed Quarterback Film Reprise

There will be no Lincoln-Douglass debates about who the starter should be but MGoVideo has helpfully boiled down each quarterback's performance into individual video clips.

Denard:

Gardner:

Lost in the fretting about Gardner's passing is that he looked very dangerous as a runner. That pop outside on the inverted veer he kept on was worthy of Denard. Kid is a big-time athlete.

And Bellomy:

Is that the people who were arguing Denard should move to WR last year are generally over it.  The bad news is that they've moved on to Devin this year.

Also happened when Stonum and Hemingway were around.  Until we have a QB that can consistently make teams pay for it, they'll focus on the run game.

Denard's a great overall QB, but he's not a real accurate passer - therefore he doesn't benefit from a WR 'getting a step' on his man as much as a conventional passer would.

I heard the chatter of people wanting him moved to WR early in the spring and thought they were completely nuts!!! I have been a long time Gardner supported and thought that he may turn out to be a very dangerous QB...........

You knew it was coming...... BUT I could not agree more now. I hate to say just because a bad spring game that he should not be a QB anymore but for the love of god if you have ever played QB or football at all you can tell that kid clearly does not know how to throw it. He never looks sure of where he is throwing and he has no spin or zip on the ball. It looks like he is just trying to push the ball down the field!!!! I thought when he first came to UM he would develop into a better QB than Pryor but I hate to say it but his throwing is far worst than his, and his running is dreadful as well!!! Make the move because he doesn't have it.

I hope that Shane Morris is ready to step in right away because after DROB is gone it looks painful...... and don't you dare say BELLOMY!!!!

I agree, I think everybody forgot what a prostyle qb is after Tate and drob and Gardner came in, but bellomy is what that qb is, he makes quick reads and gets the rid of the ball, and he's taking what the defense gives him. you can tell he doesn't drop back and look for the big play, he's a quick drop back and throw while all in rhythm. He's what the coaches want to move to. I've said it before, bellomy will be starting in 2013 unless Morris is just a beast.

If we believe Borges, no QB is ready to step right into his system, so it is pretty unlikely that Morris will perform better in this offense than both Bellomy and Gardner when he arrives on campus.

Borges told us in the presser that Gardner had a very good (excellent?) spring camp. So the logical assumption is that he had bad day the day of the game. Assuming that we get enough of a lead in a few games this season that Gardner can get plenty of reps in real games and get used to the pressure, we'll have an opportunity to assess his progress. At this point you are jumping the gun.

Gardner really looks like a terrific athlete, big, strong arm.  Another year in the system and another year of coaching and (hopefully) a redshirt, and we have a good QB for the two years after Denard graduates.  He plainly needs to work on his passing, but if we have receivers who can get open deep coming in this year or next, he sure has the arm to get it to them.

I didn't get to watch the spring game, but I now understand the panic. Devin threw ONE good pass the entire time he was in. Denard is the QB, and Bellomy looks serviceable. Just move Devin to WR, where he would be way more helpful.

What makes you so sure that Bellomy is a servicable backup?  He moves well in the pocket, seems reasonably athletic, and is reasonably accurate.  However, his two misses took away a potential big gain on the slant and the second was wildly inaccurate on the roll-out to the right.  He also didn't attempt a single pass down the field, and based on a couple of his throws to the sideline, I think there's reason to be worried about his arm strength.

It was nice to see Bellomy in action, and in a real pinch, I don't think he would kill us out there, but there wasn't anything in that performance that said "ready to be our #2."

Was it just me or did the O line make Devin look worse than he was - seemed like he had no time.  Certainly took some wrong options (held it instead of giving to fitz) and some of his dump offs were bad,  but it seemed he had some big bad, free running D in his face on many of those early snaps.

Bellomy looked much more comfortable out there than Devin.

Devin was playing against the 1s in the secondary and on the d-line, and Bellomy against the 2's. Though there were at least three passes, where if he had placed them better they would have been completions, and the one to Gallon that would have gone for 6 if he had lead the receiver.

Honestly, I don't think the relative measure between Gardner and Bellomy based on the Spring Game without watching what they can do with the 1's is a fair measure.

At least his runs weren't yakety sax, and there were no passes beyond the line of scrimmage. (i.e., there appears to be improvement in decision making) Given a full fall, and some decent game experience, I think the other errors melt away too. It is like watching Denard last year. Experience and consistent preparation with the 1's, make a big difference.

Man, I'm going to miss Denard in 2013.  Just a great little player, and kind of sad that we probably won't his type at UM going forward.

Upon (my) further review, some of my Bellomy arm strength concerns watching live may just have been him putting some touch on the ball. He has nice zip on a couple throws(1:37 is a good example). He doesn't have a huge gun, but looks serviceable.

I came away with a little better impression of Devin than after watching live as well. He only threw a couple decent passes, but his scrambling ability I think still gives him the edge as the #2 guy, especially if the spring game was just a down day throwing the ball for him. Still would love to see him on the field as a WR if Denard is healthy though.

I've really enjoyed the various edited compilations of the Spring Game.  It has actually made me regret, just a little, that I spent the effort to record and watch the Spring Game as a normal TV program.

As progressive as BTN and March Madness are starting to show themselves, they really just don't have the resources to focus on doing "grass roots" analysis like the supporters of this Blog Community.

Thank You all for your efforts and please keep it up!

well, sometimes.

I actually thought DG looked pretty good back there, mainly from the shotgun with the 2 step turn.  at 6'4", i just can't imagine a spot on the field he can't see, and his mechanics are leaps and bounds better than i've seen in a while.  And him moving around in pocket and then pulling the trigger to run really looked good...can't wait for that

Also, after reading all the "switch to WR garbage", i reviewed his takes again, and I honestly saw a lot of his throws were to receivers that weren't Denard-spread-wide-freakin-open.  Yes, he had 2-3 real uglies, but had a good hit to Gallon (really pumped to see his Sr-yr coming out party in JerryWorld). i feel like a little more zip on the ball + crisper routes + improved timing could really translate to Sportcenter Top Plays.  All of which comes from him not being rushed into PT, and showing consistent improvement year over year.

Can anyone clear up/argue/confirm my thinking that the WR's could have made it a little easier for our boy?
