Just to pass some time by before the letter of intents start piling up, name who you think are the three biggest 5 star busts since 2002. I am using Rivals and my three have got to be in no particular order, Willie Williams, Xavier Carter, and Xavier Lee. Willie Williams spent more time with the cops than he did on the field, Xavier Carter was more dedicated to track and it is a shame his speed and athleticism never panned out on the football field, and Xavier Lee didn't even start and when he played, he was not very effective.
Three Biggest 5 star Busts
(First Time/Long Time)
Melvin Alaeze, Maryland, Class of 2005
Willie Williams started off at Miami, transferred to Louisville, then this happened: http://football.victorysportsnetwork.com/article.php?articleID=7530
I work (in athletics) at a school in the league he played in this year....it was a big deal down here. A lot of people were really upset but crooked things happen everyday in the NAIA.
Sure, we never saw him on the football field much, but I don't really consider him a "bust." He found his true passion and is doing well in track and field, so I can't really fault him for following his heart. Yes, it's a shame that he didn't pan out as a wide receiver because I think he could have been amazing.
I put him up there because he never contributed anything to the football team. Looking at guys like Anthony Morelli or Kyle Wright who were busts as well, they atleast were multi year starters. I guess my definition of bust was guys who were five star recruits but never contributed much.
Wait, is that not what this is about?
Was Jason Brooks a five star?
kelly baraka obama was the biggest 5 star bust in M history. If Kevin Grady was a 5 star - cannot recall - he is well on his way.
KG was a 5 star, at least by Rivals.
Platt was supposed to be the next Deion Sanders. Horrible grades kept him out of FSU and even out of JUCO. He tried playing at some lower division level and it turned out he wasn't even very good (to go along with being an idiot).
Toney Baker - It pains me to put him on this list. As an NC State fan, we all had high hopes for Baker. He was a high school legend and put up ridiculous numbers (something like 10,000 career yards). He came to NC State and was fairly productive early on, but he was never really fast enough to be a homerun hitter. Eventually, we hoped he could just be a reliable, five-yards-a-pop, between-the-tackles runner. On the first offensive play of the season two years ago, he tore his ACL (and some other things). After a redshirt year, he needed MORE surgery. (The official word was he had "loose cartilage," but you don't miss 12 months of action for cartilage.) He hopes to return next year, but I doubt he'll even clear 1,000 yards for his career.
Tim Tebow didn't win the heisman this year and he has yet to cure aids.............
Kevin Grady is on rivals as one of the biggest recruiting busts, sadly. The kid was unstoppable in high school (played against him) and still has talent.. he's just in the doghouse. Permanently. Saw him the other day too.
helped FSU beat 'Bama in '07 - he had a few decent games, there are bigger busts out there.
Grady has at least contributed. Kelly Baraka never saw the field.
Then Marques Tusiapoasosanahemmanahasapetalon.
You think Grady was a bust? Yeah, he was, but he's not nearly the bust that Jason Gwaltney was in '05.
He was his own hype machine!
