Thieves and Dorm Rooms.

I wondered about today's students having all of their laptops, ipods, cameras and video games and all of that in their rooms as a lure for thieves.   Some of these rooms look like Circuit City.  When I was in college you might lose a Foreigner album or someone might lift your calculator.  It's such a different world.

Some of you younger types may have some thoughts.  How much electronic crap do you need today to "get by" in college?

"ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan police issued a security bulletin Tuesday urging students to be aware of a series of break-ins at Mary Markley Hall.

Electronic equipment was stolen from three different dorm rooms in the past few weeks, police said.

Police said they believe the thieves entered the hall through open doors and windows."

Not necessary, but as a former Mary Markley resident I can tell you it sure was nice to have music to listen to during those freezing early morning hikes down the Hill to Angell Hall.If people want to have the HD TV and the Xbox and the Macbook and all those sweet thingamajigs in their room, it's up to them to actually close the window and lock the door when they step out. This shouldn't be hard to do, seeing how all the dorm doors at U of M are self locking now anyway.

Mmm wine coolers...

I have a Macbook, a 2000 dollar desktop that I built, my Ipod, my playstation 2, and a box full of dvds and the like. Needless to say I'm really glad the dorms are self-locking, but I have locked myself out and left my key in the dorm at 3 in the morning and had to wake up one very pissed of RA smelling like cheap vodka and busch light. Good times, glad I don't live in the dorms anymore though.

i remember those markley windows well. we often climbed out onto the ledge from my next-door neighbors room to break into ours when we locked ourselves out. can't remember my room number from freshman year (that was 14 years ago, after all), but it was the 5th floor in the back right, last room on the right side of the hall. that was a good hall. a lot of nice girls on the 6th floor in our wing, too ;) (don't show this to my wife!)

They have self-locking doors now? They did not have them when I was in East Quad (1998-00). Those must be a pain in the ass for the RA (or whoever carries the extra keys) to deal with.

Yeah they started putting them in 04-05 I think (I graduated '05). Card lock instead of key lock. Steep learning curve, I heard.

My first year was in '03 and they had them in East Quad that year.  The key cards were kind of a pain at first, as you needed not just your card, but also a 4 digit pin code.  Being from NYC I always carried my keys with me as our door was always locked, so I don't think I got locked out once.  Some other people though, go locked out 5 or more times, and it costs money after the first lockout I believe.  My roomate and I also never had anything stolen, but we didn't leave our door open most of the time like some people did.

It only costs money if you lose your key now. But if you lock yourself out numerous times, your RA hates you more and more.
